Taking down Christmas decorations

I know im being unreasonable as its none of my business what other people do but I get really annoyed at people who put Christmas decorations up in October and then take them down boxing day or like my friend Christmas day. I don't know why this annoys me but it does what happened to it being done on or at least around the 6th January. I'm just curious what others do?

As early as I can (but ended up not being until very near Christmas this year 😩)

last year I observed Candlemas, <ahem> ...then my Feb birthday, in the end it was the desire for white lights & bunnies that made me put the Christmas Decs away.

im not really feeling it this year, so probably the weekend of the 7th?? But maybe not?!?!?!

Lonelykettleshed · 30/12/2023 21:06

I like to take them down before I go back to work.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/12/2023 21:06

Mine go up late and come down early, it's a small house and I don't like the clutter 🤷‍♀️ plus I like to go into the new year with a fairly straight house.

Createausername1970 · 30/12/2023 21:08

I tend to do the tree first, around the 10th December and then the other house decorations around 20th.

They all come down some point between 2nd Jan and 6th Jan depending when the weekend falls.

I like to take them down before I go back to work.

Yup me too. I'd never go back to work with them still up. I love putting them up ( never before Dec) but love the fresh feel when I take them down 🤷‍♀️👏

stayathomer · 30/12/2023 21:09

Someone said to me today ‘oh do you still have your decorations up?’ And I said ‘yes of course’ and I got a ‘oh right!’ Look. Drove me nuts but didn’t have time to rant😅

ShowOfHands · 30/12/2023 21:11

I can't quite understand why people are annoyed by the way other people do things.

Mine tend to come down early in the New Year as it makes practical sense. Not too fussed what Brian next door does.

Ducksurprise · 30/12/2023 21:11

Normally I'm an early putter uper and early take a downer, like to have it down by NY, normally on 29/30th (Xmas day is v weird unless boxing day birthday and even then...)

But I was late this year and now interested in candlemass...when is that?

EmptyYoghurtPot · 30/12/2023 21:13

We had one tree (out of three) up all year last year. It’s the one we call the ‘Family Tree’ and all it has on it are twinkling white lights and photo baubles of us, parents, siblings and kids/grandkids. The ones of the babies even have their birthdate printed on the back. DH says even that has to come down this year as we are having some work done to the house.

OpalOrchid · 30/12/2023 21:13

Why do you get annoyed by people doing things that have no impact on you?

SgtJuneAckland · 30/12/2023 21:13

Ours go up the first weekend in December and come down the first full weekend in January, it's too much hassle for less than a month! Our house is old and we have a little tiled roof open porch thing, the twinkly star lights stay up on that all year and just come on on timer until the batteries run out 😁. I have copper wire fairy lights on the fireplace all year. DH has some used as a nightlight in his bedroom. When I was a student I had fairy lights all around my bedroom all year round, the light is nice.

Fluffy24 · 30/12/2023 21:14

Why does it matter OP?

electriclight · 30/12/2023 21:15

I couldn't care less what people do with the Xmas decorations in their own home.

I put them up early because I love the run up to Xmas, and I take them down before NYD because they make me feel sad once it is all over.

I don't think anyone is under any obligation to follow dated traditions or religious traditions are they?

Ducksurprise · 30/12/2023 21:16

Fluffy24 · 30/12/2023 21:14

Why does it matter OP?

Because if nothing matters there would be no MN

AnnieMare · 30/12/2023 21:17

Seems a shift to celebrating December, rather than Christmas. Sad.

Smarshian · 30/12/2023 21:17

Always come down on 29th here. Dd had her birthday today so we like to get the decs down and balloons/ birthday banners out at the same time.

Floralnomad · 30/12/2023 21:19

Ours go up near or on Dec 1st and come down on NY Eve because I like it all tidy for the NY .

SnobblyBobbly · 30/12/2023 21:20

I usually leave them up from 1/2 Dec until 2 Jan, although this year, I took the tree down today as we're having an NYE Party and I want the extra space for a little furniture rejig.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 30/12/2023 21:20

Took ours down today, all put away and tidy. Really because this is the only free day I have before going back to work. Otherwise it would be February and that would drive me mad 😁

HisNibs · 30/12/2023 21:20

We go on holiday next week so ours are already down. What others do with theirs is of no concern to me.

Jagley · 30/12/2023 21:20

Normally up on the first weekend of December, down by new year, yesterday was the day in the end. I like to go into the new year fresh, for me that's not with the Christmas decorations still up.

tdino · 30/12/2023 21:21

Taking the, down on Christmas Day? MN first for me. Or life first. Never heard of that.

Even if there was a Boxing Day birthday no way I have the energy to do a huge clean and sort in Xmas day. We have a Xmas eve birthday. We just do that in a different room.

Prinnny · 30/12/2023 21:21

I like the build up to Xmas, but once the big day is over I feel all deflated (I work all the way through as frontline nhs so no two weeks off for me) although I have enjoyed some twixmas days this year! I like to go into new year all fresh so some decs have come down already and the trees will go tomorrow.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/12/2023 21:22

Reluctantly put them up in early December because I have a child. Took them down yesterday because I'd had enough. My Mum used to do the 12th night thing but I just can't.

Woahtherehoney · 30/12/2023 21:22

I love Christmas but once it’s done I like to get my house back to normal! I took my tree down yesterday and put away all the decorations in my house - I put them up early December. My outside lights are still up as I need DP’s help to take them down so that’s a job for tomorrow.

I like to start the new year fresh!
