Taking down Christmas decorations

I know im being unreasonable as its none of my business what other people do but I get really annoyed at people who put Christmas decorations up in October and then take them down boxing day or like my friend Christmas day. I don't know why this annoys me but it does what happened to it being done on or at least around the 6th January. I'm just curious what others do?

Why do you get annoyed by people doing things that have no impact on you?

I honestly don't know 🙈

Ours is still up as we have people over for New Year's Eve. Will go down probably late New Year's Day before we go back to work.

tdino · 30/12/2023 21:23

Yes totally agree new year fresh, just staggered at the energy to deal with that on Xmas day as well as everything else

Ifailed · 30/12/2023 21:23

If you don't put the silly things up you never have to take them down.

HTH.

SalviaDivinorum · 30/12/2023 21:25

Another week before mine will come down but I do appreciate that if they've been up since November people will be sick of them although we are still in the traditional 12 days of Christmas.

Mine don't go up until the middle of December but it seems that the trend is getting earlier and earlier. It's not one I like but I just silently judge and move on.

Mummyme87 · 30/12/2023 21:25

We normally put decs and tree up first weekend of December and take down NYE so it’s fresh for 1st Jan. I can’t bare the clutter.

this year didn’t go up until 8th dec as too busy and came down last night and today. I’m also 38weeks pregnant so want everything sorted asap

Andbreatheee · 30/12/2023 21:26

I'm unsure as to why people doing totally innocuous things in the privacy of their own homes annoys you! Mine came down today - I always get so sad that Christmas is over that I don't like looking at them anymore. I also like to go into the new year fresh.

It doesn't annoy me in the slightest if people leave theirs up later.

Soubriquet · 30/12/2023 21:26

My dh always takes them down on Boxing Day and then goes mad cleaning the entire house. I keep telling him it’s tradition to leave till January but he insists this is his tradition so I let him get on with it

Mumofyellows · 30/12/2023 21:26

I took mine down today, have been wanting to since Boxing Day! I love Christmas but once it's done I crave the space, clearing away the clutter. I bought new fresh smelling candles, new cushions and gave everything a good clean and dust today and feel so much better for it tonight. I go back to work on Tuesday and want some time to chill before. That said, I couldn't care less what others do, leave them up all year for all I care, I just have my own personal preferences!

JellyfishandShells · 30/12/2023 21:30

Ours went up on the 14th and down yesterday. Had a good afternoon session today rearranging and consolidating the storage and labelling clearly - quiet glow of satisfaction of overcoming the ‘ been meaning to do that properly for years but usually pack away in a hurry and regret the next year’ cycle.

HelpIcantfindaname · 30/12/2023 21:30

I always liked to take decs down before I returned to work, I was a teacher.
Sometimes I've taken them down to have more space to fit people in on NYE.
Usually they go up beginning of Dec.
This year they've gone up & down around my chemo. So took a week to get them up beginning of Dec, then they came down on 27th so we could get them in the loft while I'm well before next chemo.
My daughter often takes her down early so there's more room for the big toys.

Stepbystepfan · 30/12/2023 21:32

I am going back to work on the 2nd and will be taking mine down on New Years day. To me, when I go back, that’s the festive period over. I don’t want to spend the following weekend taking down decorations; it doesn’t sit well with me.

electriclight · 30/12/2023 21:32

I'll tell you what annoys me. It's people who think the whole world should take their decs down on the entirely arbitrary 6th January and feel cross with anyone who instead makes their own traditions. Focus on yourself and not what other people are doing in their homes.

NutellaNut · 30/12/2023 21:33

My decorations will be up till just before 12th night. I’m always sorry to take them down as they look so pretty. Everything always looks so bare afterwards! 🎄

baubl · 30/12/2023 21:33

Sorry but mine came down on 28th. It's all about the build up to Christmas for me (I don't put decorations up til about 10th dec though). Once Boxing Day is over I'm done...I want all the clutter put away and a good clean.

Hummusanddipdip · 30/12/2023 21:38

We put them up after the last birthday before Christmas and then take them down before the first birthday after Christmas. So up on the 16th, down on the 27th.

If dh had his way it would be up first weekend in December and down the weekend after New Year.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/12/2023 21:38

Our tree went up on 9th, but I'd been slowly putting up the other decorations in the preceding week. I'm back at work on the 3rd so will probably start taking them down on the 2nd. I do like the idea of leaving them up till the 6th but I think I might go on a New Year shopping spree that day instead!

Friendfoe1 · 30/12/2023 21:39

Our tree came down today and I’ll do the rest in bits over the next day or two so they are gone by New Year.

Socksandfrocks · 30/12/2023 21:40

I usually agree, and they must stay up until boxing day for me. But we had no room for our my daughter's toys. Felt so less stressful on the 27th. I have cats that also eat the tree and I'm sick of cleaning cat puke every day.

Judellie · 30/12/2023 21:40

@Ducksurprise Candlemas is 2 Feb. The church decorations stay up and carols are sunf thoughout January. I thought it was meant to be when the Wise Men got back home but Google says its 40 days after the birth of Jesus and when Mary and Joseph first took him to the temple in Jerusalem. Or it might just be when the days get lighter!

Judellie · 30/12/2023 21:40

millymog11 · 30/12/2023 21:41

I've taken mine down. Being a single parent I prefer to get it down whilst the kids are at their Dads as it is one less thing to do when they get back.
There is someone on our local facebook page who has advertised a service of taking down your christmas decs and various grades of cleaning (starting with hoovering where the tree was all the way through to cleaning your oven). The most basic service of taking down decs and a small amount of cleaning was offered for..... wait for it..... £80.
Who has that kind of money i ask myself? I guess they get some takers tho...

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/12/2023 21:41

Why would you give it headspace

Willyoujustbequiet · 30/12/2023 21:45

Twelth night here as tradition dictates as do all of my neighbours by the looks of it.

I'd be paranoid of inviting bad luck otherwise!

zelda10 · 30/12/2023 21:45

Up the last Saturday in November (sorry but December goes so fast!) and down today. Christmas is over on the 28th and it feels weird seeing in the new year with all the previous year’s Christmas stuff up.
