Cheeky this and lil that?

This grinds my gears unfortunately. Someone I know is always bobbying off on holiday and is forever in bars when at home (no I'm not jealous, I get to do just what I want in that respect). Good for them.

But it's always accompanied by pictures with comments about a lil brekky, a cheeky jaunt, little drink with Fred cheeky bit of something. Grrr!

A lil brekky turned out to be a plate of full English!

Mute them on social media?

Doggymummar · 30/12/2023 12:47

Wow, you spend too much time on socials. Time for a culling?

ShirleyPhallus · 30/12/2023 12:47

Their language is exactly in keeping with yours though….

SomeonTookMyAnonymousUserName · 30/12/2023 12:49

Maybe 'grinds my gears' and 'Bobbying off' pisses her off too? Everyone uses different phrases. Live and let live

I don't write like that on social media. I've been deliberately facetious in this post with language. It's not my usual sentence construction. In fact you'll find me on Pedants' Corner.

I don't understand why everything is cheeky.

Bobbying off
grinds your gears
grrrr

Because that is social medias way of talking. If you hate it that much then it's time for a break. Or you could see it as a form of social conditioning where everybody hates the language but feels like they have to conform or they won't be accepted as serious sm'ers and end up being ostracised 🤔

ElFupacabra · 30/12/2023 13:00

Do you want everyone to write how YOU would like on their own social media to appease you? Yeah, your friend is the problem. Perhaps spend some time in the real world and not stalking them on social media every second and this wouldn’t be a problem.

You might be happier if you stay there then.

ButteryBiscuitBaseBiscuitBase · 30/12/2023 13:33

Because it makes it sound fun and light-hearted rather than something serious and formal. Like life is supposed to be, in my opinion.

INeverForgetAFaceButInYourCaseIdLikeTo · 30/12/2023 13:36

And yet you're talking about

grinding my gears
bobbying off on holidays

Some people need to buy a dictionary and extend their vocabulary 😂

TheAverageJoanne · 30/12/2023 13:51

Christ you're bigger grinches than you're making me out to be. Mumsnet never fails

Ridiculous comment. Stalking indeed! Ever heard of a news feed? Silly Billy!

I don't understand why everything is cheeky.

This makes you sound quite unintelligent.

Do you really need someone to point out it's because that's the way this person enjoys speaking?

minipie · 30/12/2023 13:55

Yet another reason not to be on social media. I highly recommend it OP.

TrolleyCase · 30/12/2023 13:57

I agree. ‘Cheeky’ used this way is very irritating. My husband is one such offender.

The irony.

BrendaMcPherson · 30/12/2023 14:00

YANBU and I imagine many of the previous posters agree with you, but pretend not to.

Bambooshoot · 30/12/2023 14:00

You are right of course, it is nauseating, but the current fashion on AIBU is to attack the poster for anything lighthearted (heaven forbid we have any funny posts anymore!), hence the rather self righteous responses.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 30/12/2023 14:02

I suppose it's a sort of faux breeziness designed to create the impression the person is fun and easy-going.

TheAverageJoanne · 30/12/2023 14:04

@YabbaDabbaDooooo Maybe it's because I'm not neurotypical that it irritates me. It's possible to be ND and intelligent at the same time.

I also think it's copycatting to use this way of writing. Like they've seen it and think it's cute or funny so they'll do it too.

OP posts:
CityCommuter · 30/12/2023 14:06

Social media isn't meant to be taken seriously, it's just a bit of fun when you have a spare 10 minutes to have a look! There's no obligation to look, post, comment or even like anything! People can word things anyway they want to on their page no matter how annoying it might be to others, it's not a school exam!

Maybe mute some of your friends posts so you don't see their annoying phrases Grin

minipie · 30/12/2023 14:07

FreeezePeach · 30/12/2023 13:58

The irony.

Fair enough. I meant the type of social media where people feel the need to share that they are going on holiday, having breakfast or off for a drink with Fred. MN is rather different.

LittleGreenDragons · 30/12/2023 14:08

You aren't wrong OP. It is annoying, which is why I no longer go on FB, and have never had Instagram or Twitter. Adult DD shows me just enough kitty tiktoks to stop me making my own account. It's weird out there in the abyss 😉😂
