Cheeky this and lil that?

This grinds my gears unfortunately. Someone I know is always bobbying off on holiday and is forever in bars when at home (no I'm not jealous, I get to do just what I want in that respect). Good for them.

But it's always accompanied by pictures with comments about a lil brekky, a cheeky jaunt, little drink with Fred cheeky bit of something. Grrr!

A lil brekky turned out to be a plate of full English!

I'm surprised more people haven't agreed with you OP! Do they also say "me thinks"?

Try being from Northern Ireland, where 'wee' is put in front of everything!

-Put your wee pin code in the machine
-Can I take your wee name?
-Do you have a wee Advantage card?
-Can you put your wee signature here?

  • (my favourite, by the hairsdresser to my dad) Do you want me to take a bit of your wee eyebrows?

Then 'cheeky' sometimes gets added in, and you've got a cheeky wee cocktail.

I think YABU because you believe you’re a superior being and expect everyone to conform to your approved way of posting, but SM by its very nature, is geared towards the vacuous and pointless.

If someone frequently posts in a style I find annoying, then I mute them. Their posts won’t interest me, but presumably others enjoy them? One of my pet peeves are the endless posts of said person holding a glass of wine in various outlets. To me, it makes them look like a raging alcoholic but it’s not my place to police how others use SM. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@YabbaDabbaDooooo Maybe it's because I'm not neurotypical that it irritates me. It's possible to be ND and intelligent at the same time.

I also think it's copycatting to use this way of writing. Like they've seen it and think it's cute or funny so they'll do it too.

Edited

It's possible to be ND and intelligent at the same time.

Did you need to be so patronising?

I'm pretty sure most people know this? What we didn't know (because you drip fed it) was that you're ND.

and ' a wee' this and that- it all drives me mad. 'Cutesy' words.

Ffsmakeitstop · 30/12/2023 14:18

I agree completely op. It makes me cringe especially as my FB friends are real life friends too. Luckily they don't actually speak that way.

'Wee' (in the sense of small) is regional, though - it isn't seen as a cutesy word in all parts of the UK.

I work with a couple who do exactly the same, except they were behind with their rent and were almost evicted, still owe hundreds of pounds to a couple of co-workers, always skint but yet manage "a cheeky weekend away" "Sunday lunch out" and numerous posts as such. If you can't afford to repay people or your rent I fail to see how they can afford it all. Oh wait they're living off other people's money effectively 🤣.

We also use wee in Scotland. I'm forever saying it and actually do my own head in with it 😂

I'm pretty sure 'cheeky' is regional too, in that it's mostly said in and around East London?

I disagree- the people who use it, use it all the time- in ridiculous ways.
'wee drink', 'wee buns', 'wee walk', 'wee nap', 'wee bit cross', 'wee smile', 'wee coffee', 'wee dress', 'wee gin', 'wee dote', 'wee holiday', 'wee weekend away'.

The word means nothing- it's used to signal they are from Northern Ireland and to appear 'cute'. It's awful. In every one of the instances above it is just unnecessary. The two I am thinking of barely used the word 10 years ago- they use it constantly now as their only adjective.

Rockrobon · 30/12/2023 14:28

I agree OP. It sounds very irritating.

I love all Irish accents (and from both sides of the border) so everything sounds better in those accents. I could even forgive ‘cheeky’!
