Woman's weird behaviour at duck pond?

Aibu to find this woman weird?

Dh and I took the kids to our local park today. The park has a little pond with some ducks and swans and we walked down to the water as our kids wanted to see the birds.
At this pond, there was another family consisting of a Mum, Dad, and two young children. This family had brought some bread to feed the ducks. Their kids seemed to be loving it and were giggling away, the animals were loving it and our kids were loving watching it.

A random woman walks by with a toddler. She stops and passive aggressively tells her child using a very loud voice, so the other family can hear her that you shouldn't feed the ducks as it's not allowed. The other family ignored her and continued with what they were doing.

The random woman then took her child over to a rusty, dirty old sign and very loudly read it out to her child. The sign states not to feed the ducks as it can attract vermin. Again the family ignored her. She read the sign very loudly again! She then rants that they are feeding the ducks white bread and this is so super harmful. This behaviour went on for a good 5 minutes with the other family continuing to ignore her.

At this point I'm thinking wtf is she trying to achieve here? Either have the balls to approach the family and share your concerns or mind your own business. What on earth was she hoping to achieve by passive aggressively randting in the background? The park was pretty busy and loads of people were staring at this poor family that just wanted to enjoy some time together.

Is it just me or is this a bit bonkers?

You should have joined her! The family should be mindful of the hazard they posed to the ducks and everything else.

When OP tries to be clever but fails miserably. Wrong but can't admit it. Quoting one post when the majority and those qualified tell you otherwise shows lack of intelligence.
She's waved and signed off as she didn't like people not agreeing with her. 👋 OP.

Totally agree and so passive aggressive with the majority of her responses too (those I’ve seen anyway).

Think she just wanted everyone to agree that the random woman was rude and obnoxious.

The irony being that what OP has done is very much similar to what she initially complained about in her thread 🙄

A duck developed gout from eating bread and another, at a different pond, lost the ability to fly. Knock off the bread and spread the word.

PurpleFlower1983 · 31/12/2023 07:47

I watched something about ducks and bread, it said that while bread is not great, many people stopped feeding altogether after bread being bad became widely known resulting in a lot of animals starving.

pineapplesundae · 31/12/2023 08:13

Why not give them proper food?

Snuggleyou · 31/12/2023 19:14

This level of passive aggression is annoying as hell. Saying that she’s not wrong about bread being harmful, I used to take my daughter when she was little but now we are more informed of the dangers. Why on earth would anyone encourage their little ones to harm wildlife, that’s not an act of kindness.

Pinkyandthebrain96 · 01/01/2024 05:02

I keep ducks and would never ever give them bread .It swells in their stomach and will kill them. Mine have layers mash with grit mixed in .I haven't read all the thread but I am team random woman. Infact I would have gone to the family and told them the harm bread can do .In a nice way of course .

To all those that just joined and didn't read the fucking thread...

It's not illegal to feed bread to ducks, nor is it going to harm them! Plenty of links and posts throughout this post to clarify this if you have any confusion.

It is incredibly harmful. I have kept ducks for a number of years and no duck keeper would ever entertain giving their ducks bread .Either layers pellets or mash will grit .

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/01/2024 05:06

If bread swelled in ducks stomachs and killed them, there'd be dead ducks all over the country, we'd have wiped out the duck population by now and clearly, that hasn't happened and this is a myth.

There is no doubt that cheap white bread or even artisan wholemeal seeded whatever is not an ideal diet for birds... but spreading total myth and fantasy is really not helpful.

Justfinking · 01/01/2024 05:08

Yeah, I'm with random woman, hopefully the family took the hint!

PurpleSilverPetal · 01/01/2024 06:01

RSPB say bread in moderation is fine.

Am I the only one who when someone pulls this passive aggressive shit finds it makes me want to continue whatever behaviour is being crapped on about? If possible makes me want to behave even worse?

Seriously if you really want to change people's behaviour grow up and talk to them directly. This approach will do nothing for me except make me think you're a bit of a twat.
