Christmas Eve Disasters

We are currently at my in-laws: me, DH, and two DDs - 9yo and 5yo. At around 5 this afternoon, just as I was smugly
congratulating myself on avoiding any illnesses or major catastrophes, my 5yo (lightly) bashes her face on the wooden arm of my FILs chair and knocks one front tooth out and another is now loose.

Blood everywhere. DH goes ashen and has to be consoled as he hates the sight of blood. 5yo is screaming her head off, I have blood all over my favourite hoodie. 9yo disappears in tears upstairs. I’m frantically trying to remember if this is a baby tooth or a permanent one! I’m 95% sure it’s a milk tooth but regardless we are booking a trip to the dentist in the New Year! I think I read something about baby teeth being smooth along the bottom (which this is) while grown teeth are jagged?

Anyway, 5yo is now the owner of an adorable lisp and I’ve started in on the Baileys.

Anyone else have any disasters?

Large Baileys sounds like a good plan!
Both my front teeth were accidentally knocked out when I was 5- there are some very cute gappy pics!
Merry Christmas!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 24/12/2023 20:21

Just as we were about to take our family photo in front of the tree, our two year old spewed all over himself and DH.
We got him cleaned up and took him to bed...my bed that I had just a few mins before changed into nice fresh linen. He laid down, coughed, sat up and vommed everywhere. He's already woken up once so I think I'm in for a long night.

Shame about the tooth, I'm certain it will be a milk tooth as adult teeth come in around 7/8 don't they?
Sounds horrendous.

Merry Christmas to us 🤣

MulledWineBeMine · 24/12/2023 20:25

I bet the lisp is cute, 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼it's a baby tooth, but definitely needs a dentist either way. I knocked my bottom ones out when I was tiny, and (sorry) have had no end of problem with my adult ones because of it.

I hope Christmas Day is a better day!!

RandomMess · 24/12/2023 20:29

Oh dear, it's definitely time for Baileys!!

I was reminiscing about building a Noddy trike that took several hours...

minipie · 24/12/2023 20:30

Yes it’s generally age 6-7 when they get their adult front teeth. So likely a milk tooth lost unless your DD has been very very early with her teeth.

I do remember toddler dd shutting her thumb in the door and pulling out the thumbnail one year. And toddler DD2 falling off the kitchen worktop onto the floor, on her head, one NYE just as guests arrived. This year Dd2 has an earache which I’m hoping goes by tomorrow….

Good luck to everyone dealing with illness and accidents.

Marshmallow87 · 24/12/2023 20:31

Oh god can I join!!
Sorry to hear about the teeth and the vomit hope they are both okay 😭

I’m currently running a piping hot bath with a massive glass of wine. 2 year old decided to have no nap today and he’s been horrendous due to it. Melt downs since 6am this morning. Have not prepped any veg etc just totally cannot be arsed anymore. Family have said they might not even make it due to illness. I was Googling at what age is Christmas fun with kids 🤣

still excited to see my 4 year old wake up in the morning but yeh…. It’s not going 100% to plan so far 😂😂😂

Plump82 · 24/12/2023 20:34

Well this is the perfect opportunity to teach her the song All I want for Christmas (Is my two front teeth)? 😂

DragonMama3 · 24/12/2023 20:36

Does she need glasses? How did she do it?

2Old2Tango · 24/12/2023 20:36

Hopefully just baby teeth OP. The adult teeth will have big roots and I wouldn't expect them to come out with a knock, unless they broke off. Baby teeth usually have barely any roots.

For me it was my cooker. We have a habit of slamming the door a bit to close it, but the oven has obviously had enough (over 15 years old) and the catch broke so the door wouldn't stay shut. Obviously it's going to be heavily used tomorrow so I was panicking a bit. Once I'd calmed down I did some Googling. Fortunately it's a Rangemaster, with a fan oven one side (used the most), and a conventional oven the other side (rarely used). Google showed me how to access the catch so I've had to take both doors off, remove both catches, and replace the broken one with the good one from the other side. Any overflow cooking will go in the Ninja air fryer. Not how I expected to spend my Christmas Eve evening!

I hope your DD is ok. Now she can expect a visit from the tooth fairy as well as Santa 🎅 🧚‍♂️

SeaToSki · 24/12/2023 20:39

It isnt just the young dc either, last yr ds3 aged 16 said I dont feel v well Mum at 10am on Christmas Eve. He had a screaming temp, heart rate over 150, low bp and rapid breathing, he also has a heart condition. I managed to get an online Dr appointment as we were in the middle of nowhere and the Dr said he has to be seen with those symptoms. Then ensued a 90 min race to the nearest urgent care (we are in the US) for an in person evaluation. He had a v nasty case of flu and strep throat combined. Antivirals and antibiotics were prescribed, we shot into the nearest chemist with 10 mins to spare before they closed for Christmas. Then the 90 min drive home. We got back in time for me to collapse into a hot bath and DS into a warm bed before I had to turn around and continue to host our guests for Christmas (who had arrived while I was out). Wasnt the best start to the festivities, but it has made for a funny story that will be remembered for a long time.

Malbecfan · 24/12/2023 20:39

Sounds horrific, but hopefully you will laugh about it in years to come.

22 years ago, we bought DD1 a "big girl bed" from Ikea, a lovely bed that grew as she did, with a Tweenies bedding set and a Winnie the Pooh one. It had been hidden in the garage for weeks til DH could be arsed to put it together. Except DH didn't do it, then on Christmas Eve got pissed then had an asthma attack. We couldn't find the bloody instructions for the bed, so were trying to put it together downstairs then carry it up to the room where both DDs were sleeping whilst DH was wheezing like mad. No idea how but both slept through us manhandling it through the door and DD1 was delighted a few hours later.

Now both DDs are perfecting their vegan caterpillar Christmas cake in the kitchen whilst I get stuck into the M&S liqueurs. Merry Christmas all!

Cheeseplantalltheway · 24/12/2023 20:41

@Duckfeather We had the almost identical situation on Christmas Eve many years ago!

Though I think the lost tooth was due to "hitting face on chest of drawers after jumping from a height". Husband gets all fainty at sight of blood so suddenly I had 2 "patients " to attend to.

No lasting ill effects thankfully.

ManateeFair · 24/12/2023 20:44

If she’s only five and the tooth had a smooth edge then yes, almost certainly a baby tooth! I expect that’s why it was knocked out so easily - there’s probably not much root on a baby tooth.

I imagine she’ll be very proud of her gap tomorrow!

APurpleSquirrel · 24/12/2023 20:45

I will join you!
Had a great day, chilled, lovely lunch out with the extended family, board games & a film.
DC (9 & 5) super excited; got them up to bed. I'm reading to DD (9), whilst DH is in with DS(5). Hear crying so go to chevalier what's happened. Find DS crying & huge red/white patch on his nose. DH appears with a cool pack - apparently they were playing. DS was head butting DHs hand & he decided to move his hand & DS smacked his nose into the rail edge of his bed!
Got ice (as cool pack was doing nothing), got him to sniff, see if he could still smell (he could), no blood thankfully, given him calpol for the pain & swelling.
He's going to have a massive bump & bruise tomorrow but thankfully no trip to A&E.
Pass the gin!

AhBiscuits · 24/12/2023 20:45

At 5 they'll be baby teeth. I think she does need to see an emergency dentist ASAP. That other front wobbly one will probably be painful and make eating difficult.

ManateeFair · 24/12/2023 20:45

DragonMama3 · 24/12/2023 20:36

Does she need glasses? How did she do it?

I imagine she did it by just, you know, being five?

Purplerain0505 · 24/12/2023 20:47

My Christmas Eve has been lovely, however my arthritis has decided to flare up for the first time in years and I can hardly walk. I can barely get out of my chair to get the presents under the tree, which I was looking forward to. It’s so frustrating and painful. I’ll have to watch DH do it while I drink another glass of wine.

DS was also being really difficult today and we managed to get him to bed nicely, then realised we didn’t put the mince pie and carrot by the fire. Argh. Oh well.

Cupcakekiller · 24/12/2023 20:48

Yes- we ended up in hospital from 10.30am to 7.30pm with DD who had to undergo a totally unexpected procedure under general! She's fine but it definitely put a dampener on our plans! I'm far too knackered to wrap any presents now! (I always leave them till Xmas Eve- will wrap earlier next year!)

Rawroink · 24/12/2023 20:49

Wow what a cracking start to Christmas 🤪

mine all sprung chickenpox badly one Christmas Eve and I mean all over eyelids/blisters in mouth/everywhere…it was a disaster!

ouch

TheGruffalochild · 24/12/2023 20:50

I assume ops dd has already started losing teeth otherwise she’d know for sure it’s a milk one, right?

My dd started losing her milk teeth at the age of 4 and had a similar accident - I think they get loose when they’re on the way out so easier knocked out. Whereas an adult tooth would be a lot sturdier. If it’s smooth it should be a milk tooth - but I know your fear OP.

Try having a closer look. If she’s already started losing them there might be signs of a new tooth if the other was already loose.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/12/2023 20:51

Not this year but about 15 years ago when DD was 3.5. We were at MIL’s and had enjoyed a lovely day and DD had gone to bed about 7pm and was sound asleep within minutes. DH, me and DMIL started on the sherry and Baileys and were bordering on merry by 9pm. I went upstairs to the loo and popped my head into our bedroom (DD was asleep in a sort of foldaway bed type thing in there) and I thought something looked weird. She was covered in blood, her face, hair, the pillow etc. I (no doubt not helped by three large Baileys) screamed ‘oh my fecking God’.

Well, she awoke, started crying, DH came running up up looking ashen, DMIL then walked into the corner of the coffee table and cut her leg.

DD had a terrible nosebleed, I’d honestly never seen so much blood, it was everywhere.

thedementedelf · 24/12/2023 20:51

If it's a baby tooth there's no big pointy root.

AppleBlueBerryPie · 24/12/2023 20:54

Merry Christmas to us 🤣

DD caught rotavirus and spewed everywhere on Christmas Eve as well! Also had to cancel the holiday we planned right after Christmas and spent days cleaning up the most horrific smelling diarrhoea. The upside is that after that particular Christmas, every single one where nobody pukes over the presents is a good one. This year was fantastic in comparison.

ExtraOnions · 24/12/2023 20:58

I was about 8 when I knocked my front two (baby teeth) out, in the school playground. It was the early 80s, I got my mouth rinsed, then back to class .. they didn’t even ring my parents 😂😂

Duckfeather · 24/12/2023 21:00

Oh gosh this time of year really does bring out the disasters doesn’t it! My mum has just helpfully reminded me of the time I bashed my teeth by jumping on my bed and falling off - also at Christmas apparently!

@TheGruffalochild - yes, both DDs started losing teeth early, as did I when I was young. That’s why there’s a slight worry but I’m nearly 100% sure it was a baby tooth. There’s no big root and she had been complaining of some being wobbly. A trip to the dentist is absolutely on the cards however!

Hopefully Xmas day goes better for all of us, and @Cupcakekiller I’m so sorry for your DD and hope she has a wonderful day tomorrow!
