Just a little mild sedative daily so she never realises there are better men out there?

One of the most misnamed people...
I am so looking forward to door knocking season. It is becoming a long list of issues to raise with the incumbent mp here.

ThreeTreeHill · 24/12/2023 10:40

It's just a bit of banter, an ironic joke. Honestly you women, haven't we all joked about slipping our wives some rohypnol

LadyWithLapdog · 24/12/2023 10:42

“He knows what a woman is” is trotted out as defence for anything crass and stupid the Tories do.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 24/12/2023 10:44

Some people just cannae handle the banter.

MulledWineBeMine · 24/12/2023 10:44

MrsPoliportsGoose · 24/12/2023 09:17

A monumentally stupid thing to say, even if it was 'ironic' and especially at a Downing Street reception. We really are led by donkeys.

@MrsPoliportsGoose

oh come on now, that's not fair!!

Donkeys are lovely ❤️

pinkyredrose · 24/12/2023 10:36

Oh stop!!😂

Stop what?

EmptyYoghurtPot · 24/12/2023 10:46

Are people really defending him or are these some sort of ironic comments that I’m not understanding?
Surely no right minded person thinks that jokes about drugging someone, particularly someone you are meant to love and protect are ever ok?

MercanDede · 24/12/2023 10:47

It wasn’t the best joke, to joke he puts a tiny bit of Rohypnol in his wife’s drink just enough so she doesn’t go for a ‘better man,’ at an event about fighting drink spiking. I do think the level of criticism- being condemned in multiple top publications all at once- is OTT. White ministers get away with these sorts of comments with far less critical media exposure.

Do you read the news?

@cakeorwine

yeah but not before I read MN & given it's Christmas Eve I've been a tad busy. Just st down for coffee & MN.

so yeah, I was a bit surprised at MN's comment.

StasisMom · 24/12/2023 10:50

It is hilarious! Bit like my hero Donald Trump who just likes to grab women by the pussy. #laaaaaaaaaaads

pointythings · 24/12/2023 10:51

roarrfeckingroar · 24/12/2023 10:31

Oh it was a bloody joke

The fact that you say that says it all, doesn't it? Misogyny, oh how very funny.

DuncinToffee · 24/12/2023 11:08

It's just to stop the nagging, that's alright then

Dawn Neesom(former Editor Star): "We all make slightly off coloured jokes... he(James Cleverly) wasn't talking about rape... he was just talking about a little bit of rohypnol to stop the wife nagging him.. "

dottiedodah · 24/12/2023 11:09

These comments are in very poor taste to say the least! Whatever was he thinking of? Way too many women/girls /young men have their drinks spiked to very poor outcomes each year. I think this is unacceptable behaviour and so should his wife !

StasisMom · 24/12/2023 11:11

For me, it's not so much the totally shit joke, it's more that he is in such a prominent position but has such poor judgement.

DuncinToffee · 24/12/2023 11:13

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/breaking-james-cleverly-faces-first-31743551

Fawcett Society chief executive Jemima Olchawski said: "It's sickening that the senior minister in charge of keeping women safe thinks that something as terrifying as drugging women is a laughing matter. No wonder women don't feel safe. We know that 'banter' is the excuse under which misogyny is allowed to thrive. How can we trust him to seriously address violence against women and girls? We deserve better than this from our lawmakers and Cleverly should resign."

Coolhwip · 24/12/2023 11:14

The joke is crap as well as in poor taste. So not only is he a dumb cunt he’s also an unfunny dumb cunt.

Summasolstice · 24/12/2023 11:14

It’s an off colour joke that someone MAY perhaps make amongst close friends after a few drinks and get away with. But to think it’s acceptable to say at an official reception AT THE SAME TIME he personally is pushing through legislation on date rape drugs is quite frankly unfathomable.

Are you seriously saying he's being criticised to this extent because he's black?

SabrinaThwaite · 24/12/2023 11:46

Will Cleverly roll out the same excuse that he used when calling a Labour constituency a ‘shit hole’?

At the time, a spokesperson for Cleverly said: “He did not say that, and would not. He’s disappointed people would accuse him of doing so.”

It didn’t work then and it won’t work now.
