Just a little mild sedative daily so she never realises there are better men out there?

The moderators obviously understand - people keep reporting the thread because they don’t know who I am.

The Home Secretary ultimately has to answer to Parliament and is responsible for making sure our communities, in all force areas, are kept safe and secure, and for protecting our national borders and security.

so obviously, I’m in charge of what’s funny or not.

I hope he gets asked about this at a commitee hearing - and followed up by talk about sexism, banter and mysogny.

pointythings · 24/12/2023 09:56

@pinkyredrose what are you saying here? That what the Home Secretary said is OK, just a joke, we should all just shut up about it?

GCAcademic · 24/12/2023 09:59

Is there a term for the opposite of nominative determinism? Because, it’s very much needed in his case.

Barnabusbear · 24/12/2023 10:03

Home Secretary James Cleverly apologises for 'ironic joke' about spiking wife's drink www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67813689

ZombieGirl86 · 24/12/2023 10:04

Disgusting sexist behaviour and jokes like James C's all add up to create the culture of misogynistic patriarchial crap and society we as women survive in. If this doesn't make you angry your not paying attention.

TurquoiseDress · 24/12/2023 10:07

You sound like a winner!

You’d think @mnhq would have stopped it in its tracks, not ask for “more context” about how to drug a woman.

Did you really think that MNHQ were supporting a poster in drugging a womam- really?

soemptyinside · 24/12/2023 10:09

He needs to go.

If it’s acceptable for a member of our Government to joke about drugging his spouse, it sends a horrific message about what is OK in the UK.

Pure misogyny to let him stay. I don’t care if they all say shit like this. If they do, they should all go. We have to take a stand. Get rid of them all until the ones left in power don’t think it’s OK to treat us like lesser objects!

No, but given how sensitive the subject is, I’d have expected them to add the context themselves in the OP.

Thisvis what scraping the bottom of the political barrel looks like.

LadyWithLapdog · 24/12/2023 10:18

Christ, what an unbelievably crass and stupid thing to say. Will the Tories defend him as just a bit of banter? Like they did the Lockdown parties? Is it just the dour Lefties who find this inexcusable?

ilovesooty · 24/12/2023 10:22

This is the culture Boris Johnson created and endorsed. Remember he joked about Pinscher assaulting men. I honestly think Theresa May would have sacked Cleverly immediately.

Are you Mrs Cleverly?

I think we’ve all thought that a number of times over the last few years, but it keeps getting lower.

bjjgirl · 24/12/2023 10:25

This is so depressing, how can this man be allowed to keep his job.

There are even women posting on here defending him.

I wish I had your amount of time on my hands

Is that all you have to say??
So you agree with him then??
Birds of a feather and all that.

lemmein · 24/12/2023 10:32

Nothing this government does or says surprises me anymore. I'm eagerly awaiting the day when they're gone and I can return to watching the news without wanting to put my foot through the tv!

Well I expect given that statement you'll be so relieved that it shows he knows what a woman is.

I can't believe he has not been asked to resign over this. It's beyond parody.

Can't you?

He's only been Home Secretary a few weeks, Sunak won't want to lose another one for an inability to think before speaking.

If it wasn't Christmas maybe - but I think they'll be betting this gets forgotten pretty quickly.
