To ask what's gone wrong with your Christmas so far?

Just because I'm revelling in my own misery.

DS has been up all night with his 3rd raging stomach bug of the month. I thought we'd got unlucky enough to have 2 floor the house but I'm now running on no sleep while he can't keep anything in either end. I am SO obsessed with Christmas Eve and Christmas.. I know it's little in the long-term but I'm just so gutted and absolutely terrified it's going to keep spreading through the house.

So give me something to distract me and tell me what has gone wrong for you for Christmas this year.

DM diagnosed with cancer a week ago and had started treatment so she feels really ill and not up to Christmas. DFIL is dying of cancer and expecting him to die any day now and DMIL died of cancer 3 weeks ago so cancer, 2023 and 2024 can go away, not enjoying December so far and not expecting January to be any better.

ChristmasAgainWTAF · 24/12/2023 12:23

My dad having died, I'll never get to give him his Christmas presents. To make it worse, I'm distracting myself to the point I'm pretending he is still here. I am doing as much as I can with my young dc. If I face the reality I'll not get through it. I'd rather cancel Christmas, this isn't what my dad would want for his grandchildren though. I would give anything to face the trivial problems of Christmases gone.

When you take the ham out wrap it really really tightly in grease proof or parchment and then in clingfilm, squish it together as hard as you can.

it will be hot, let it drain first, use marigolds and a tea towel to protect your hands.

You will need to cool it down quickly, so put it in the freezer if you have one, set a timer for 2 hours so you don’t forget, then on a plate on the top shelf in your fridge (coldest place)

it will set as it cools so you will have more chance of a ‘ham’ shaped ham.

My nearly 90 mum fell over and broke her hip so spending most time at hospital
my son is laid up with a really bad virus .

ChekhovsMum · 24/12/2023 12:28

After I spent 8 hours topping up the Christmas Pudding pan on the first ever Christmas when I’ve managed to make it from scratch on the correct weekend in November, DP dropped it on the garage floor the other day so now the outside is covered in glass shards. DP is insisting we can still serve it. Fuck that!!!

FrenchandSaunders · 24/12/2023 12:28

Brother has covid so none of his family are coming and I’ve got so much food. He doesn’t feel unwell. I wish he hadn’t tested, it’s amongst us all every day 🤷🏼‍♀️

Poppsidoppsi · 24/12/2023 12:28

DH has covid. He’s never been so ill. After nearly losing my dad this year (brain tumour and major heart op a month ago), we were looking forward to a big family Christmas. That’s now scuppered and I can’t risk seeing my family in case the DC and I catch it and pass it on. We are now stuck at home (luckily I was able to get a turkey in). Merry Christmas.

Three months! How is she coping? I’d be going bonkers by that point, although it’s very tense here and maybe that wears off after a while. Bless her, hope she has a lovely Christmas with you. Perhaps I could send my gamer over to hers and they could start a Useless Exes club 😁

I have no idea, although they both work shifts so they don't see much of each other.

Perhaps that helps.

Wife2b · 24/12/2023 12:30

My 4 month old has started teethings, lots of screaming and shrieking an awful pained cry. She has been on/off inconsolable. Not looking forward to visiting family tomorrow where they will probably want her to be passed around like a parcel. Also meant to be travelling long distance on Boxing Day to visit family, if this carries on it’s going to be a not very fun few days for all of us.

spiderlight · 24/12/2023 12:30

DH hurt his back at the allotment yesterday and it's much worse today, so he's hobbling round in agony. DS (16) seems to have become entirely nocturnal and is grumpy about everything. We're all missing our beloved dog who passed away a few weeks ago. Just generally not feeling it yet!

DeeLusional · 24/12/2023 12:31

Is DH incapable of buying his own bonjela?

JacquiDaytona · 24/12/2023 12:34

mice scrabbling about under the floor all night. Or even worse, possibly rats. £350 down for a pest control man. Merry ratmas to us 🐀

Gameofmoans81 · 24/12/2023 12:37

We travelled 6 hours to spend the week with my family after an initial negative covid test. Tested again when nearly there (my mum is v vulnerable) and it was positive! Spent an hour in their garden and came all the way back. Cancelled 2 meals, 2 parties and spent the week in bed 😭

4 pulmonary embolisms. Can't even have bloody sprouts tomorrow or any alcohol. Ho hum! But hey, didn't die (every cloud and all that!)

Elderflower14 · 24/12/2023 12:41

We nearly didn't have an oven for Christmas... Due to the absolute incompetentence of the electrical company. The glass kept falling out of the bottom door. They came out and ordered parts. 10.days later when I was panicking they agreed to loan us an oven. Two days later they said the parts were in. We decided to stay with the loan oven. Last Monday they persuaded us to have the parts fitted. Man came on Wednesday and had the wrong parts. Because we have extended warranty they said they would give us a new oven. That arrived on Friday but the men refused to fit it as it was too near the arch into the dining room.
Apparently they refused to fit the old oven ten years ago but I can't remember that.
Luckily our lovely Mr NDN came round and has fashioned a metal bracket on the door to keep the glass on place...!
The company had the nerve to ring yesterday and ask when they could arrange a redrop of the oven... I told.the woman in no uncertain terms that as they refused to wire it in they would have to wait till I found an electrician to do the job!!

Stickthatupyourdojo · 24/12/2023 12:44

D&V arrived in our house yesterday afternoon for DH then kicked in for me overnight Xmas Sad celebrations with all of DH's extended family missed and no longer seeing my parents tomorrow. Hoping the kids don't get it and I am up to cooking some sort of Christmas dinner.

RedHotAirBalloon · 24/12/2023 12:47

My brother has fallen out with me, sent me abusive messages then blocked me saying that I'll never hear from him again.

Ifancythegrinch · 24/12/2023 12:47

Dh bought me a really nice toaster as an early xmas present.

I chucked the toaster we had when I was diagnosed coeliac as it was obviously contaminated with gluten. Been using the grill for a year which is a pain.

Mother in law knew this. She also knows we have no gluten containing foods in the house as I won’t live in fear of cross contamination in my own home.

Came downstairs this morning to find her eating toast. She had brought her own bread as she “didn't want to eat the gluten free rubbish”, used the toaster and dug into the butter dish, butter now has to be chucked as it’s contaminated, as does the toaster - I can’t use it again anyway.

Dh has got really angry. He has told them time and time again. They have said they are leaving today if I am going to overreact about my silly diet.

Yeah, I don’t want to risk the next few days sat on the loo in pain and vomiting, but okay, I am the one over reacting.

(They haven’t done this before, but they saw the disastrous segments on this morning last week where even a dr said there were “different levels” of coelic
and that only some had to be careful of cross contamination or they might “get a bit tired” 🤦🏽‍♀️ So now they think I am over reacting completely and a liar. thanks a bunch, This Morning.)

Couple of family with pneumonia.

Senior family member who fractured femur and pelvis on Monday (stumbled getting out of bed).

Cleaning yesterday, an appliance tripped the circuit breaker 7 times before I finally convinced the person using it to replace the fuse.

Burst water pipe meant the central water was off for the street until the evening and work continues today (bless the engineers).

I'm ripening a couple of dental abscesses (but I've managed to get an appt. for 29th).

It could be far worse tho' that's not a challenge to the Spirit of Christmas.

I’m so sorry so many of you have illnesses or are having sad Christmases so far ☹️

Mine is that I broke up with my useless bf last week but he can’t move out until after NYE and he isn’t going anywhere for Christmas (as he says he has to work for money to move out). So it’s reeeally awkward and I don’t really know how to act tomorrow

Ooofh. That’s tricky. But it’s the last Xmas you’ll spend with him, so hit the Bailey’s.

AnonKat · 24/12/2023 12:51

Received a parking ticket. Thought I'd paid but the ticket was void as it didn't accept my revolut card.

50 pound fine and a 30 pound admin fee as it was paid by my lease company.

I should have double checked the receipt 😔

FourthToeOnTheRight · 24/12/2023 12:53

I’m so sorry for those of you who are really struggling right now. I really do hope that 2024 is kinder to you all 💐

Mine is insignificant compared. Car packed up two days before finishing for work, at work. I work 25 miles from home! AA came out the next day, got it started, limped home with it. £170 later, it’s fixed, but then drove over a pot hole, new tyre required, so £240 odd spent in two days!

Have to go and visit the MIL this afternoon (it’s a long story) but she’s just not a very nice person. Our mission today is to kill her with kindness, nothing else for it. I am seriously considering feigning an illness though as she just brings everyone down! Will be glad to get it over and done with. I’m not a mean person, I’ve tried extremely hard over the years with her. Ahh well.
