This is disgusting, selfish and downright thievery which takes away the enjoyment of others.

Hope this guy gets caught, convicted and locked up.

Really want Banksy to continue doing this sort of art installations but fgs can't it just be left for others to admire?

Well I’m sorry I don’t know a famous tree

Why don't you Google it instead of bothering to come on here to mock something you confess to knowing nothing about?

CaroleSinger · 22/12/2023 21:24

Knowing Banksy this could be a publicity stunt. Funny how there was a ready made audience and film crew already in attendance...

I didn’t think I would get a result for “that beautiful tree that was cut down”

If he didn’t take it, someone else would have.

Better a pleb than an art gallery.

This.

They all seem to mysteriously disappear. At least those lads might make a few quid.

Who has he plagiarised?

That's what I want to know.

User1775?

Twistyripple · 22/12/2023 21:48

Interested to see who he plagiarised...

jc12689 · 22/12/2023 21:49

Isn't the whole point of this sort of art is that it's transient? The fact that it may only be around (either painted over or stolen or whatever) for a short period of time is the thing that makes it special. You almost have to be lucky to see it.

"better a pleb than an art gallery'??? Why?? So no one can see it but said plebs friends? At least an art gallery is generally a public space.

SausageinaBun · 22/12/2023 22:16

If the whole thing is genuine then the council would probably pursue the thieves as they've not stolen just a stop sign, but a valuable art work that would belong to the council.

Edited

Exactly. And is it a coincidence that the Stop sign was on Commercial Way? I don’t think so. It’s a comment on our capitalist world Wink

So I think it was fitting that a member of the public took it. Or he could have been from the council, who knows.

scoobydoo1971 · 22/12/2023 22:33

I can imagine Banksy rubbing his hands with glee at all this media publicity over one of his artworks. He does have form for spectacular displays, such as the auction that went on fire . I might only speculate that the reason the police want him to report the theft is because they think he might have a hand in the 'grand theft' as some kind of stunt. But that would be just me, being cynical as usual.

Haffiana · 22/12/2023 22:52

How would Banksy benefit financially from this? Why pull the stunt?

PlipPlopChoo · 22/12/2023 23:26

Look at the thing. It's a load of shite. I am glad it got nicked so the highway team can replace the sign without causing an uproar.

Maybe Banksy arranged for it to be 'stolen' then sold? Great advertising strategy that bumps up the price and interest in his art and the subject matter.

It makes a statement about the monetary value of things that are not really valuable. ie, how much is a stop sign actually worth compared to one that's considered art. If Banksy is all about making people think about art and social conscience, this gets people talking.

Maybe he 'stole' it, sold it and donated the money to charity. Maybe he kept the money for himself and is fooling us all into believing he has a social conscience?

Mamette · 23/12/2023 09:11

The fact that it was taken in broad daylight with an audience makes me think it’s probably a set-up.

SoupDragon · 23/12/2023 09:19

This is completely irrelevant, but how long have stop signs in the UK been octagonal? I thought they were round! (To be fair, I don't come across many - I can't think of any locally actually)

I don't think you offended anyone, it was more the weird "lol". You could've just asked the question without a lol at the start of it like some kind of teenager

Banksy is a multimillionaire plagerist who's work is over valued and pumped up by the rich public school set he went to boarding school with. I am glad a bloke nicked it but you can bet the 'art establishment' will find some way of robbing him of the profits/

I always thought that they didn't know his identity? Do they know who he is now?

Jacfrost · 23/12/2023 09:48

Stolen in broad daylight in front of a crowd of onlookers

Do people really believe this is real?! It's clearly a stunt

Every bit of that. If this had been done by some 15 year old or a less established artist it would just be plain vandalism but because this ‘one person’ is the darling of the art world then it’s fine.
There are Banksy greeting cards and calendars. He’s not anti establishment or controversial.
