Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

To ask you to show me your normal home…

Op, the tiles do need to go. 😁 You may need the wall re skimming after, but it would be worth it. On the plus side you have lovely high ceilings, you could really lean into that and go for a victorian feel with super high cupboards.

Risun · 23/12/2023 08:34

Lots of lovely kitchens, but a surprising lack of air fryers.

A few years ago my friend told me that I should be living in a much nicer house for our household income, so I won’t be posting photos. It’s amazing how much a comment can affect your confidence in your home; I’ve never invited anyone to my home again after that.

Ex-friend, surely? Sad

Photo

I want to step right into this photo and put the kettle on! It just feels like the people in this house live a happy life, so inviting.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 23/12/2023 08:50

Pretty much all of the pictures on here show nice or even ‘insta’ worthy homes do they not?

MidgeFragnets · 23/12/2023 08:56

I had high hopes for this thread and seeing some real pictures of small kitchens with dated worktops and mess, but this being MN some people have turned it into a 'look at my new rennovation' 'aren't I so middle class' thread. It's a shame. It was a chance for normal people to feel happy with what they have and not have a skewed idea of what a normal house is, and get away from the insta gloatfest, but as usual some people can't resist a stealth boast. I suppose the OP asked for normal homes and it is subjective, so in your circle of friends these might be the 'normal' and not so nice homes.

Maybe next time we should ask for shit, tiny homes instead. I bet we still get pictures of huge lounges with grand pianos and enough seating for 20 people and comments saying 'we've just outgrown this house now, so hoping to upsize'. 😂

ploikj · 23/12/2023 09:02

@MidgeFragnets there have been a mix of kitchens, every one of them looks lived in in some way, shock horror people are different! Some have kitchens from the 90s, others have brand new grey ones, everyone has different means and priorities and tastes. I for one am enjoying photos of real kitchens which is what the thread was asking for.

People do live like that i am one of them. I have 4 children although oldest away studying. I keep no junk whatsoever, have zero clutter and everything else has an exact place. My children’s room are organised where every single thing has a place.

while starting my cleaning first thing I do everything door handles skirtings etc all surfaces, polish, brush, hoover. When home from work I sort all washings out etc and run back over the place. At weekends I do all beds bannister deep bleach all bathrooms and tiles wash all door mats etc.

I could not live any other way I need everything pristine. It’s most likely a disorder with me though. I go in other peoples homes and see dust all over their skirtings and I do not judge but it stresses me out. My house at any given time looks show home.

So I don’t think it’s all about showing off I don’t post pictures on my social media of home I never have. It’s genuinely for me and me only. On the plus side my oldest son is super organised and spotless as he’s seen how I approach things since young. But we’re all different and that’s all it is at the end of the day 😊

The way you live sounds like my idea of heaven. Unfortunately for me I haven’t trained DH or the DS’s very well. I took Thursday off work and spent hours cleaning. DH made tea (bolognese) and the kitchen looked like a bomb had gone off. It gets me down a bit but they’re all so wonderful ways I try not to blow my stack too often

Christmashols · 23/12/2023 07:46

I think putting my house photos on the internet is a good thing. Potential burglars can look and say, let’s not bother with that house because there’s nothing to steal 😂

If the burglars saw a picture of my house, they'd say let's not bother as a colleague got there first.

Twocrabs20 · 22/12/2023 23:26

We moved a few months ago. Items still not unpacked. I can’t keep up with laundry. This is me doing my very best

Loving the bottle of red wine................😁😆

AShiningThongOfAngels · 23/12/2023 09:08

@Twocrabs20 I want to be your friend. That would also be my version of tidy.

I would actually enjoy being in your house in a real way, rather than in a "oh my God, I'd love to be this perfect" way.

Captainobvious35 · 23/12/2023 09:09

Laughing at the people who think posting their kitchen on Mumsnet is going to pose some sort of security risk.

I disagree. No one is showing off. There have been 3 or 4 lovely ones which look tidy, clean and modern. But on the whole I think they are all very dated and very cluttered. I’m surprised how many kitchens that are still around from the 90s. Sorry, I don’t mean to sound awful, but I’m astounded that you think people are showing off with these pictures and trying to be middle class. I really don’t think they are, of the ones that do look nice, the posters have said how they recently renovated and saved up for their dream kitchens. They seem proud as punch, not boastful.

The people I follow on Instagram have huge kitchens with islands like snooker tables, they’re from kitchen designers like Martin Moore, Tom Howley, Neptune. None of these are what you would call ‘Insta’ kitchens. But what is lovely is that so many posters seem to genuinely love their homes.

Jealous, are we? There is a real variety of homes on show.

StBrides · 23/12/2023 09:18

It is the most British thing ever to excuse pictures of tidy kitchens with "but right now the bin is overflowing, the cat is eating a large pigeon on the floor, my paintwork has seen better days and someone is doing naked break dancing on the kitchen table"

mimiku · 23/12/2023 09:18

readymealeater · 22/12/2023 12:58

What annoys me about my home is that is is very, very old and all the woodwork seems a bit battered and knocked up. So I could clean all damned day (I don't, btw) and it would still look a state.

So depressing!

This is EXACTLY what my house is like and I absolutely hate it!! But ripping off the 120 year old woodwork will mean replastering everywhere which we simply don’t have the money for.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 23/12/2023 09:20

Im loving all these homes. I have had a kitchen fitted 10 years ago and prob people would think it is new and trendy (I like to think that I was ahead of time!!!) However, the rest of my house is a tribute to ebay, very cluttered and old fashioned. (Cosy I think). When I work out how to namechange I will put pics on (and no its not very tidy)

MasterBeth · 23/12/2023 09:23

MyChristmasUsername · 22/12/2023 13:13

OP is probably well intentioned so not wanting to shame them for the post. But please everyone stop sharing the inside of your houses on the internet. Seriously not safe. No matter how anonymous you think this might be, you can never be sure what happens to data in the future. Once it’s out there it’s there forever.

What nefarious purpose do you think someone will make with @Noseyneeps photo of her kitchen?

Littleblackcat80 · 23/12/2023 09:26

I didn't see any stealth boasting. There has been a wide variety of homes shared - some are tidier than others, decor varies, and types of houses.

They've all looked believably lived-in.

Most of them looked inviting & cosy - and as I said earlier, because the houses in UK are often quite different to Ireland (much more variety), it's really interesting for me to see (eg the OP's as an example, I can't think of a house design similar in Ireland. I love that variety!)

NewHouseNewMe · 23/12/2023 09:33

I think that’s very cosy and very nice @Littleblackcat80

SussexLass · 23/12/2023 09:34

View from the sofa this morning. DS has just rolled in after his work Christmas party…. We have people coming in a hour. Sofa looks quite nice in this photo but in reality is a sort of shitty mustard colour. Also can’t see the dog hair tumbleweed.

To ask you to show me your normal home…
WandaWonder · 23/12/2023 09:35

We just have a normal kitchen, I dont follow social media show kitchens as couldn't think of anything more boring but I presume the account holders or their staff stage it all for the internet so presume it's not real anyway

Sofa looks lovely!

Reclining DH ... less so. Is that a bucket in case he's sick?!

Time to get him moving!

SussexLass · 23/12/2023 09:38

It’s DS snoring away and yes the bucket is just in case! Going to have to get him moving somehow…
