Fed up with the Instagram showing perfect homes, when the real world is much messier..: so show me your normal homes… here’s my messy (and a bit dated) kitchen

Here’s mine now and then! I was finally able to buy my own humble house thanks only to help from parents 6 years ago aged over 40 after some tough years and stupid decisions. It was what I could afford but I hated the kitchen. It’s the only living space and so the mess really bothered me. It was always so cluttered and badly laid out with no room for anything, cupboard tops filled with teabags, cake stands, cereal boxes etc etc (here it had been decluttered ready to renovate). Eventually this summer with my partner we managed to get the dream kitchen done. I absolutely love it and pinch myself every day at the difference it has made to the space. The photos were taken when it was done and staged. We still have no curtains or blinds (Christmas lights coming in from the street are blinding us as we watch tv!). It usually looks kind of like this, and I try REALLY hard to keep it tidy and lovely. I buy flowers for it every week (or two) in my attempt. Right now the dog’s bed is strewn with his toys by the ‘island’ thing, there is some recycling by the sink ready to go out, wrapping stuff out on the table and the flowers are dead. It’ll never look exactly like the photos again and I’ve never used Instagram and wouldn’t know how but just to have enough room for my things and to have my clutter IN the cupboards instead of on top feels like heaven!

Thank you! I love it too, my fave colour and something I've always wanted to do.

I am baffled by the posters thinking photo's of someones kitchen, could be used nefariously.

So that way of thinking, means Rightmove, where it names the actual street you live on, should not exist, or in fact, any estate agents if that's the case 😂😂

The privacy ship sailed for anyone who has their medical records with the NHS or banks online.

The overreaction about kitchen pictures online is so OTT.

yousoudou · 23/12/2023 03:34

Here's my current view! Mega-clean of upper floors today and will tackle downstairs tomorrow. Not clean but tidy and cozy!

Sometimes tidyish, most of the time a tip! But cosy!

Loving the thread. So many inviting homes with lovely character.

@Cappuccino17 Not swapping my kitchen for anything!!!!! I would love a square kitchen rather than a long thin one, but this has everything I always wanted and with so much storage I can actually keep it tidy! What you can't see is that the wooden surface at the end left is a peninsula, where we have our coffe/tea station (there is an under counter fridge) and we have a little area with a small table and chairs, more cupboards (built in desks) and a bookcase beyond that. And you can't see the underfloor heating.
We had to live with inadequate bodge-it kitchens for so long - this makes me really happy!

Toooldtoworry · 23/12/2023 05:57

@Woolabaloo that is such a huge transformation. Stunning!

Nice kitchen worktops- what are they?

How is it not safe? I'm trying to think of what someone could do with a photograph of my kitchen that would be deemed unsafe? Even if they could somehow figure out where I lived, what could they do with that information?

This ^

I am really interested in that answer too, as it sounds quite ridiculous to me, but I am very willing to be educated on this matter.

However, if you think @MyChristmasUsername
that @Noseyneeps post is somehow a danger to her, what do you think about all those articles in magazines where people have renovated their homes, you not only get about 3 before and after pictures of each room, but also the name and photo of the owner and often their spouse, and maybe a dog or two as well. I think that they also usually give some idea of the location of the property too?

BettyPhuckzer · 23/12/2023 06:26

I love my home. It's small, needs decorating and the kitchen and one bathroom are c 1995. I couldn't care ! It's safe, warm, cosy, and fills me with joy 😊

MidgeFragnets · 23/12/2023 06:32

My kitchen is tiny. Have to store the food elsewhere in the house. Not really fit for a family of four, but we live in a two bed apartment that probably wasn't designed for families and with profit and not practicality in mind.

I always find looking on rightmove a good bar for what is going on out there and set the top price in the normal range. You get all sorts of images back.

Instagram is just bullshit. I know someone who has this insta kitchen as they are a designer. They do have a lovely house, but it has cost a fortune and it very much looked like a building site for the best part of a year. At one point they had the dated tiny kitchen.

Firefly2009 · 23/12/2023 06:53

Not going to share but these pictures look like palaces compared to mine.

Netaporter · 23/12/2023 06:57

@Chelsea26 you asked about the chair in one of the posters’ living room. It is an IKEA Strandmon chair. It is current and you can purchase it in that colour currently. I renovate houses and use those armchairs a lot when staging, they are ace.

Loving the thread btw.

ProfessorplumBilliardroomCandlestick · 23/12/2023 07:45

@hashebeenyet Wow. What's the paint colour please? That's gorgeous

Christmashols · 23/12/2023 07:46

I think putting my house photos on the internet is a good thing. Potential burglars can look and say, let’s not bother with that house because there’s nothing to steal 😂

Thank you! They’re quartz, I think called oasis. They are very white (as opposed to come being on the creamy side) and have slight veins and a slight sparkle just in certain lights. I love them 😍

It can be a bit much at times.

I guess every silver lining has a cloud!

Thanks so much! I never thought I’d be able to have anything like it.

Some really lovely cosy homes on here! Keep them coming! 😀

Seadreamers · 23/12/2023 08:19

A few years ago my friend told me that I should be living in a much nicer house for our household income, so I won’t be posting photos. It’s amazing how much a comment can affect your confidence in your home; I’ve never invited anyone to my home again after that.

Great idea for a thread. So refreshing to see normal homes! I'm sick of seeing the too good to be true ones. How anyone lives like that I'll never know. Even without 3 kids my house wouldn't look like some of them do.

People do live like that i am one of them. I have 4 children although oldest away studying. I keep no junk whatsoever, have zero clutter and everything else has an exact place. My children’s room are organised where every single thing has a place.

while starting my cleaning first thing I do everything door handles skirtings etc all surfaces, polish, brush, hoover. When home from work I sort all washings out etc and run back over the place. At weekends I do all beds bannister deep bleach all bathrooms and tiles wash all door mats etc.

I could not live any other way I need everything pristine. It’s most likely a disorder with me though. I go in other peoples homes and see dust all over their skirtings and I do not judge but it stresses me out. My house at any given time looks show home.

So I don’t think it’s all about showing off I don’t post pictures on my social media of home I never have. It’s genuinely for me and me only. On the plus side my oldest son is super organised and spotless as he’s seen how I approach things since young. But we’re all different and that’s all it is at the end of the day 😊

Alondra · 23/12/2023 08:22

My kitchen looks reasonably tidy considering I've been baking for the past 4 hours. I clean as I go along and still have a cream caramel in the oven.

The rest of the house is pretty tidy.

The most appealing and inviting houses on here are the eclectic, lived in ones.

NotASingleClearSurface · 23/12/2023 08:33

Oooh, my first name change!

The kitchen isn't bendy, I just tried to do a panorama-ish thing to properly capture the chaos
