Have people gone off Christmas cake and Christmas pud?

Both are delicious.

More for me I guess.

Christmas cake is my favourite! Mine is maturing nicely in the tin, and will be iced on Saturday. Love a large slice with a cuppa on Boxing Day ❤️. Half the people in my house love it, the rest hate it!

porridgeisbae · 21/12/2023 20:24

Yom yom yom. It's become so unpopular for some reason that last year my mum bought me my own individual xmas pud.

Fionaville · 21/12/2023 20:25

I love them both!

ElevenSeven · 21/12/2023 20:27

Love Christmas pud with pouring cream.

Not a Christmas cake fan, but DH would fight you for it.

Traditional souls in this house!

idontlikealdi · 21/12/2023 20:28

Haven't gone off it, never liked it.

porridgeisbae · 21/12/2023 20:30

Love Christmas pud with pouring cream

Ooh maybe I should try that. Only ever had it with custard.

CranfordScones · 21/12/2023 20:31

Slices of Christmas pud gently fried in butter for me.

Not doing cake this year, but if there are any yellow-stickered ones on the shelves after Christmas, I won't be able to resist...

Do it! The Harvey Nichols Christmas pud from Ocado is divine, and worth every penny

Davros · 21/12/2023 20:31

I've never liked them or mince pies. I don't like dried fruit any time of the year

Needmorelego · 21/12/2023 20:32

I like the fruit cake part of Christmas cake but not so much the marzipan and icing. I think that's why a lot of people don't like it - the icing is too sweet and marzipan is just gross 🤣
I might buy a little fruitcake for myself (others in the family aren't big cake fans).
Christmas pudding is lovely - with cream not custard though.

babaagusjeac · 21/12/2023 20:33

Think people are just sick of the same mediocre dross year after year. I mean if you're going to go to the effort of an amazing big Christmas dinner with all the trimmings why follow it up with something that looks and tastes like the 70s called and said they didn't want it back?

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/12/2023 20:35

Never liked any of it, give me brandy butter and brandy sauce.

Nothing 70s about Christmas pudding. I suspect you weren’t around in the 70s.

@vodkaredbullgirl Ooh, what with? Or just with each other?

Nothing 70s about Christmas pudding. I suspect you weren’t around in the 70s.

@MereDintofPandiculation What did you have? I was born late 70s and I imagine my Nan was doing a Christmas pud, with a 5p (don't know if we had a sixpence around) in. Definitely as long as I can remember, and she wasn't one for being cutting edge. Asked my friend who was born in 1963 and he definitely had it.

There are Victorian recipes for it.

I know it wasn't a retro fad like prawn cocktail, knickerbocker glory etc though if that's what you mean.

I get what the PP was saying that there are trendier puds at the mo, not sure what the latest Thing is.

@babaagusjeac What do you have instead? Most people like a pavlova at ours I think. I'll have everything. Smile

Ketzele · 21/12/2023 21:15

Because they're vile. Ditto mince pies.

vodkaredbullgirl · 21/12/2023 21:15

Just with each other

porridgeisbae · 21/12/2023 21:35

So much inspiration here.

OP posts:
Dacadactyl · 21/12/2023 21:39

I mean, I'll eat them if they're the only thing on offer, but I'd much prefer a chocolate yule log.

porridgeisbae · 21/12/2023 21:41

@Ketzele Wow. Controversial. What things do you like instead?

OP posts:
EvilElsa · 21/12/2023 21:43

I hate both! Also can't stand mince pies.

PonyPatter44 · 21/12/2023 21:46

I dont like raisins, currants or sultanas. So....not bothered about Christmas cake, pudding or mince pies. I really like candied peel, particularly the expensive Italian stuff...but its not much of a pudding on its own!

TeenLifeMum · 21/12/2023 21:46

I love them but am always too full to eat them on Christmas Day… but that’s the only time you have them.

NotToYou · 21/12/2023 21:46

I love both! Has to be custard on the Christmas pudding.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 21/12/2023 21:47

I think bought marzipan spoils Christmas cake. It’s the almond essence. Bought mince pies are often unpleasantly vinegary. I have had good bought Christmas pudding, but looked around this year and they all looked a bit poncey.

TiptoeTess · 21/12/2023 21:48

Love both. The only correct ratio is 1 wodge of pud to 1 gallon pouring cream though.
