To think Taylor Swift will one day run for President and might even win?

I mean her success in music is staggering and she is obviously somebody who is extremely narcissistic driven.

I am not saying she would do this anytime soon but perhaps in say 20 - 30 years time.

She has an enormous fan base and the media seem to love her. Heck, she could almost fund her own presidential campaign.

@CrispsandCheeseSandwich

I truly do not recognize her music or that of Beyonce or other pop singers of the past 25 years.

Basically I don't have kids that would bring it into the house, I don't watch tv programmes that would feature it, or radio. I don't really go to clubs that play music (I'm 60). Most of my listening is to audiobooks or classic rock from the 60s-80s.

Perhaps it's been on in shops or other public spaces but I wouldn't know who was singing. Nor care.

A friend's daughter & granddaughter were playing it when I was there for tea the other day. Unimpressed. She's no Barbra Streisand or even Lady Gaga. She sounds low-class. But I do admire her business acumen.

I have never knowingly listened to a Taylor Swift song either.

TypicalCoach · 25/12/2023 15:16

The democrats wouodnt allow it so only as a republican which would be a whole other issue.

Also I'm sorry but for those who haven't heard her music must atleast have heard "shake it off"

I've heard references to that song but never the song itself.

Quite a few people are disinterested in pop music; not sure why that is so surprising.

In most photos she has her mouth wide open like a braying donkey. Love her lipstick colour, though.

Agree about the climate change hypocrisy. All those concert tours, jetting around. If she really were serious she wouldn't license her name to mountains of factory-made useless tat.

Dotjones · 25/12/2023 16:29

Is she right wing enough to be US president? The US left would be far right in most democracies.

DisappearingGirl · 25/12/2023 16:43

At least she's not nearly dead and seems vaguely reasonable

Ha, I love that this is our bar now. I agree though, I'd vote for Tay Tay over Trump, Biden, Sunak, Truss or Boris!!

underneaththeash · 25/12/2023 16:46

It's the sort of thing my 12 yo would post.
Who knows? I hope they reform the presidency before then so it's proper politicians running the country (and I wish we paid our properly too).

ALunchbox · 25/12/2023 16:54

I would have assumed her fan base is very young. Would she appeal to 'older' voters? (In my late 30s and I count myself in that definition)

TypicalCoach · 25/12/2023 17:00

There was a period a few years ago when Dwayne the rock Johnson was giving serious hints he was going to run for presidency he even released a tv show to basically out any of his past mistakes.

He either lost his popularity or better against it when he realised the unpopular decisions he would have to make in the real world

sakes · 25/12/2023 20:01

Agree

Why would she want the hassle and stress? She’s as rich as fuck. If I was that rich I’d either carry on doing what I love (music) or retire and holiday.

has she shown any interest in politics?

I don’t follow her much but I reckon this is close. She gets to do what she loves, and has a talent for, politics is very different

How would you define low class?

LaurieStrode · 25/12/2023 20:16

Spongeeater · 25/12/2023 20:07

How would you define low class?

American hillbilly. With poor pronunciation and a sort of slangy, babyish tone to her voice.

After all the hype I honestly expected a cross between Streisand, Madonna and Sarah Brightman.

Now the fact that she is dating that roughneck American footballer makes a lot more sense.

CormorantStrikesBack · 25/12/2023 20:30

I just googled, apparently her dad was a bank president. Not sure she’s a bona fide hillbilly.

Her father, Scott Swift, is the founder of The Swift Group, a Merrill Lynch Wealth Management Group.
Swift has been a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management for more than 40 years, according to his firm's website.

Edited

I'm talking about her sound and persona. I expected less boppy teenager, more polished and elegant.

To each their own!

People also LOL’d at a certain Mr T back in the day.

Donald won in 2016 because people didn’t vote — either because they were positive Hillary Clinton was going to win and they didn’t need to or because they simply didn’t care.
Voter apathy has always been a problem in the US.
Russian disinformation was also a significant issue in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Just because you’re a popular celebrity or singer doesn’t mean you’d make a brilliant president.
People have pretty much caught on to that.

I'm excited to see how her music changes as she goes into her 40's.
I suspect we will see more like Evermore and less about school age relationships.

She’s 34 and her first album is 17 years old... her fan base isn’t that young., not anymore.

No clue how that would work with voters to be fair.

I mean I don’t think she’s actually got any political ambition either, she keeps it well hidden if she has, but a lot of her fans are definitely not young.

Agree, nothing to indicate she has political ambitions, no more than any other artist, be it Madonna, or mick jagger.

i think the fact she’s so successful, and 34 years old, makes some people uncomfortable.

for me, any woman who achieves success, gets to the top 0f their field, whatever that looks like. Gets my support.

for others, it makes them a target.

NotBadConsidering · 25/12/2023 22:16

No one who thinks men should be in women’s spaces and sports, and that stopping children being given medications to stop their puberty is a bad thing, will ever be able to win over enough Republican support to win anything.

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 25/12/2023 22:18

Misogyny is a terrible affliction OP. Get well soon.

I mean they’re oodles of famous men as rich as Taylor Swift. Quite a lot of them are violent, racist, anti-Semitic, and criminals. Taylor Swift’s biggest crime seems to be ‘dated some men’ and people are far more offended by that and label her a narcissist because of course a women with notches on her bedpost is far more offensive than a violent man

xmasevefairy · 25/12/2023 22:24

tabulahrasa · 21/12/2023 19:17

To be fair, the current domination of pop music is because of the sheer volume of work she’s been putting out over the last wee while.

In the past 3 years she’s released 3 new albums and 4 re-recorded ones, with new songs added.

There are plenty of other pop artists doing fine, just releasing stuff at a normal rate.

Exactly.
Also @Togomalone I think fewer 'giants' these days is a good thing - it's because the sheer volume of music has increased.
In bygone days I'd have been restricted to what was on sale at a record shop or on the radio. Everyone listened to the same music because they had no other choice.

These days with YouTube , Patreon, Spotify, people can publish + release their own music, build a following, tour etc all on their own. Of course they need significant investment to truly make it big but I follow a lot of independents who have about 500K followers and have made enough to do this full time. There's something for everyone.

I do think that the 'big names' these days tend to be a bit samey but IMO 'big' artists from the supposed 'golden era of pop music' are the same. Even if I don't know the 'who' I can identify the 'when' accurately within 5-10 year periods. Not surprising as commercial operations tend to back 'sure' sellers.

FWIW DH and FIL both think they're better than me because I listen to pop from the 21st century (I know a lot about older pop thanks to my mother) but my music tastes are far more diverse than theirs...I also listen to small independents most have never heard of, different styles classical, jazz, pop in different languages (I speak 4) , 'religious' music. I find that the people most judgey about 'modern' music have very restricted tastes themselves.

Actual trained musicians on the other hand don't really care. My concert musician friends do enjoy Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran!

She received more votes than trump did.

Then maybe they should move away from the electoral college system which aims to bring in line the rural vote against the more densely populated city vote.
