In thinking it's not ok to reveal your son's ASD diagnosis to 4million strangers on Instagram?

Mrs Hunch - Instagram cleaning woman- has posted a pic with her little son. He's had an autism diagnosis confirmed.

How can it be justifiable to share his private medical information with all these random strangers? Wherever he goes now in his life, a quick Google search will reveal really personal information about him. This information is no longer his to possess.

If my parents had done this to me, I don't think I could ever forgive them. I feel really sorry for the kids of social media stars 😔.

Fine if thats the case the ASD is irrelevant.

she shares everything about her kids and yea there a major issues with consent there.

When I am Queen, sharing/exploiting your kids online will be illegal!!

I think its totally disgusting to tell confidential information about your kids medical condition when they can't give consent due to either age or disabilty.

I'm unfeasibly proud that I have never posted anything with my kids picture or information on my social media (not that anyone would be interested), I just wanted to make sure they had no digital footprint through me.

I don't think there is anything wrong with her saying her child has an autism diagnosis and so she is a mother of an autistic child. What I think is far bigger issue is that she shares so much of him online that autism diagnosis is attached to a child and a face etc. she's not talking about her experience as of a mother of an autistic child anymore but it's over sharing too much of his life as a whole.

It’s incredibly difficult to find a reputable provider who will do a multidisciplinary assessment for a child under 7. If you have a recommendation I would be very grateful as we are struggling with this at the moment.

Hi, I don't know if anyone else has given you recommendations but there is Owl Therapy who have people that can complete an ADOS assessment

So I waited to ask permission from the relevant person to post this and quoting post above as it’s pertinent to the point being made.

Someone I know was part of a globally viral, early00s internet meme as a child thanks to a tech savvy dad. They didn’t make money from it but whenever someone searches their name, thousands pages pop up about this meme and they cannot escape it. As an adult they have been refused jobs because of it (employers can use Google it turns out), in their current job they are ribbed endlessly for it. They have randoms try to follow on private social media and DMing them constantly about it. The meme is over 20 years old and they can’t disconnect from it, it follows them everywhere. The unintended consequences of a bit of fun for this person’s parents 20+ years ago has had professional ramifications in adulthood for them.

The ASD diagnosis in the Hinch thing, is a bit of diversion from the bigger issue. You cannot escape your past online. It’s bad when it’s been your own youthful stupidity but it’s worse when it was taken out of your hands by the people who should have been protecting you. If you cannot consent to having your identifiable information and photographs shared online then it should not be done.

@GCautist is it the Charlie bit my Finger kid?

XenoBitch · 21/12/2023 21:36

YANBU and it nothing to do with his diagnosis, but more about his consenting to his life being online.

As an adult, we can choose to document every aspect on SM, or post nothing at all. In this digital age, there are kids that are being displayed on SM but might go on to be aghast at the thought and want to hide as adults. This choice is being taken away from them.
