Family and petrol money

Aibu to charge my family petrol money to visit another family member a 420 mile round trip drive away? They don't drive.

The train ticket would be £120 each return and would take over 5 hours whereas driving would take 4 hours and they would be picked up at their doors and dropped off at their doors.

I've worked out petrol would cost about £60 so was going to tell them it was £30 each to cover my costs. They don't drive so don't understand cars and petrol. But also don't understand that mileage costs me repairs and depreciation on my newish car.

Im not someone that ever asked for petrol money when I had an old car but now I have a new car where mileage matters and loses my car value it's made me think more.

What do you think? Should I ask them for £30 each. Is that fair? What would you do?

They would be catching he train in my world. I wouldn't be charging them anything coz I wouldn't be taking them.

Ok. My mil doesn’t drive and family live 2 hours away so I’ve been in this situation before.
I wouldn’t charge if I was going anyway. We have never charged her, as we go anyway and invite her to come. We know she can’t get there otherwise. Sometimes she will pay for our food or whatever on the day so it evens out anyway.
however, if you weren’t going there anyway then yes absolutely. If my mil wanted to go see the family on a random weekend and I wasn’t going to anyway then I absolutely would be asking her for the petrol money because I have to budget for that sort of thing and genuinely can’t afford to go without planning ahead

"I'm really sorry but I'm not planning on going as I really can't afford it at the moment". Wait, and then if they don't offer, sod it, you're off the hook. Might make them think twice in future too.

You're going as well though... if the petrol is costing £60 and there's 4 of you in the car then charging then £30 is out of order... profiting off your family isn't a good look..

She wouldn't have been going at all. They have decided that she is going so that she can be their chauffeur at her own expense.

She should say, "Lovely idea, I can't make it though so you'll have to get the train."
