Someone in the group is insisting on a starter but they have agreed to taking responsibility. TBC.

This will all be homemade (apart from pastries in morning and ice cream) so it’s a lot of work - 2 main people doing it. A third person will likely pitch in a fair amount.

Is it a normal amount of food? First year hosting but any less would not be what my family is used to. But I’m doing a lot more homemade stuff whereas in previous years some of the snack stuff and desserts would be M and S.

I think it's your Christmas too and you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself to make most of that from scratch (unless you are a chef). Get some bits from M&S and free up some of your time.

christmaspaws · 20/12/2023 15:59

Way too much so budge up and I'll join you GrinGrin looks delicious

readingismycardio · 20/12/2023 16:00

If it's too much, DH and I can definitely join! And I'm pregnant, so I can eat a lot 😂

FairytaleOfKent · 20/12/2023 16:00

That's a lot of hors d'oeuvres* *and desserts to be honest but it does all look good and leftovers can be had another day!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 20/12/2023 16:01

I'd skip garlic prawns it would ruin the flavour of your meal later on.

Otherwise yes that's fine. Ensure you have part baked rolls to have leftover sandwiches at supper time.

scintilla87 · 20/12/2023 16:04

Sounds Delish but yes too much choice and way too much work to make it all. I would reduce to two choices for Houer D'oeuvres and two choices for dessert. Also, no need for three types of potatoes to accompany the main!

AgnesX · 20/12/2023 16:04

Is it a buffet? If not ease off the hoover doofers. Cut back on some of the veg and desserts.

If it is a buffet, still cut back on some of the veg and up the quantity of pigs in blankets 😁

Dartmoorcheffy · 20/12/2023 16:05

You don't need all that for the main meal. Roast and mash is enough. You don't need 2 lots of pigs in blankets. Or 2 different gravy. Or bacon in the broccoli as you already have it with the sausages

Mosaic123 · 20/12/2023 16:05

Two kinds of gravy? Seems like a lot.

I hope everyone has huge appetites.

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:05

I agree three types of potatoes is crazy but my sister’s fav is mash and dauphinois would probably feature in my last meal

Breakfast - fine

Houer D'oeuvres - really depends on quantity of each. But I would suggest picking a top 3, unless you would have 1 of each kind per person

Main - cut 2 potato types, I would suggest keeping the roast. You don't need both cabbage and sprouts. You don't need 2 gravys (unless you have a veggie guest)

Desert - fine, nice to have variety and can be eaten on following days

Dinner - fine

Drinks - maybe add a sweet after dinner tipple like a Baileys or PX

You don't need a starer too.

TeenagersAngst · 20/12/2023 16:06

Intrigued by how a houer d'oeuvres differs from a hors d'oeuvres...

Crunchymum · 20/12/2023 16:06

You are making Sticky Toffee Pudding, Xmas Pudding, Yule Log and Mince Pies from scratch?

It is a lot of food for 5 people but I think it sounds divine. As long as leftovers get used and you can afford it then why not go all out? However I'd happily forgo some of it so my hosts weren't totally frazzled.

takealettermsjones · 20/12/2023 16:06

I'm not sure why you need hors d'oeuvres if there's a starter, and the main meal is happening at lunchtime - what are the timings? Personally I'd nix the hors d'oeuvres and have them on boxing day!

I'd also get rid of one of the types of potato, one or two of the veg, and one of the gravies. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:06

I don’t like onion gravy but others do

YouAndMeAndThem · 20/12/2023 16:07

I don't think you need that many hors d'oeurves, I have got 4 + 2 kids and we are doing 1 hors d'oeurves instead of starter then a big roast dinner.

Catza · 20/12/2023 16:07

This is an insane amount of food! 5 deserts for 5 people?
Last Christmas we hosted for 8 people. We had blinis with salmon, hummus, posh crisps and nuts for snacks, parsnip soup for starter, beef wellington with roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese and one of the guest brought pavlova for dessert. Everyone was stuffed.
You are cooking for an army and it is excessive, expensive and time-consuming.

NotMyFirstChoiceofName · 20/12/2023 16:07

I think it’s too many things and too complicated for 5 people.

just one starter is fine. Two if someone else is making one and insists.

You don’t need 3 types of potatoes and 5 vegetables. Id do one potato dish, 3 veg and one gravy.

same with the desserts . Do 2 plus cheeseboard and serve them later. Skip the mince pies as most people won’t eat them.

Did you assemble this menu by asking all your guests what they wanted ?

If you don’t cut it down you will be frazzled and won’t enjoy the day.

SgtJuneAckland · 20/12/2023 16:08

You only need one type of potatoes and you have too many desserts for five people, also do you need hors d'oeuvres if someone is bringing a starter?

Dartmoorcheffy · 20/12/2023 16:08

I'm sure the others will manage with just ordinary gravy. Stop making so much work for yourself. Same goes for your sister, tell her to mush up her roast spuds and just do dauphinois instead of mash.

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:09

Hmm I just hate beige party food. So thought having set hors d'oeuvres would avoid this.

OP posts:
NotFastButFurious · 20/12/2023 16:09

Too much IMO! Do you even have enough pans to cook all that?
the starters look like a lot of faff!
One type of potatoes is fine (preferably roast) and you don’t need two types of gravy. I’d be tempted to ditch the brocolli too unless you know some don’t like sprouts.
sticky toffee pudding or Xmas pudding
if you’ve had 3 courses it’s unlikely anyone will want cheese but they might want it later in the day, same with mince pies.

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:09

The Yule log and mince pies will be made on the 23rd.

bryceQ · 20/12/2023 16:10

That's an insane amount!! But sounds amazing. Yum

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:10

We eat at around 1:30 so wanted something yummy for people to nibble on between breakfast and dinner
