Someone in the group is insisting on a starter but they have agreed to taking responsibility. TBC.

This will all be homemade (apart from pastries in morning and ice cream) so it’s a lot of work - 2 main people doing it. A third person will likely pitch in a fair amount.

Is it a normal amount of food? First year hosting but any less would not be what my family is used to. But I’m doing a lot more homemade stuff whereas in previous years some of the snack stuff and desserts would be M and S.

I’d be asleep for a week after all that but I’m sure you’ll have a grand time and no one will go home hungry.

InstantDestiny · 22/12/2023 10:23

Are you all morbidly obese?

There are kids in the Uk starving this Xmas.

Maybe ditch some of it and make a donation to charity, or the food bank.

Thats an obscene amount of food.

Montegufoni2017 · 22/12/2023 10:46

It looks amazing if it was a menu that you choose from and just have a portion of or if you were making a feast and catering for 20people. But in all honesty that looks completely excessive!
First time hosting and probably the last as even if you adore cooking, I can’t imagine you’ll enjoy your day.

northernbeee · 22/12/2023 10:53

who wants starters on xmas day? That's way too much food for 1 day for 5 people.

Nannyfannybanny · 22/12/2023 10:55

InstantDestiny, I thought the same, thought I'd better not say it, just put "ridiculous"

Can I come?! Happy to abandon my family for this! 😆

sounds lovely, very thoughtfully put together

petmad · 22/12/2023 13:29

just a tad the chicken is already stuffed as it says so no need for stuffing balls, cut down on the houer douveres , cut down on the pudding, also you need time in between cos if people are picking they wont eat the main meal we cooked for five and didnt have half as mutch as this. if youve leftovers donate on the day or day after to homeless people they would apprciate it. For me this would last a week

threatmatrix · 22/12/2023 13:34

It’s entirely up to you what you do about food but why three types of potatoes?

The OP explains why.

Seriously? Ever heard of leftovers? Turkey (or whatever) stew, curry, gratin, etc. No desserts will go wasted.

Let’s all eat gruel for Christmas and do Mr Bumble here proud.

Oblomov23 · 22/12/2023 17:24

All sounds lovely.

Missingpop · 22/12/2023 18:54

Lovely menu but how the hell are you going to cook it all & keep it hot & not over cooked? Of course you might live in a mansion with industrial cookers 😂😂😂 & two chefs to cook it for you 🤣🤣🤣🤪

kennycat · 22/12/2023 23:28

I do a similarly ridiculous amount of veg but only one type of spud and one type of gravy. I find it quite stressful getting it all out and on table before it’s cold tbh but I LOVE all the sides so do it every by year.

I don’t do canapés though. We used to have starter ditched that last year in favour of crisps, breadsticks , olives, dips etc. and this made a big difference to the ease of the meal.

You have to enjoy the food you are serving so even if it’s hard work you have to do it.

do let us know what you do end up having. It will be scrumptious whatever!!

kennycat · 22/12/2023 23:32

I’d argue to the death that the best meal of the year is Christmas Day tea. I’m the only one in the house that eats it but it’s Christmas dinner in a sandwich with the added delight of picallili. I purposely don’t out out at lunch so I have room for
my mammoth sandwich. (Sometimes baguette, sometimes cut your own bread). It’s what gets me through the trauma of
the day tbh.

Yeah…post ‘em a few sausages…

Intrigued by how a houer d'oeuvres differs from a hors d'oeuvres...

No I'm sorry you're all wrong, it's Horses Doofers.

Grin

Nice spread OP, but 5 puddings? You're going to end up with an awful lot of waste if you aren't careful. I'd serve half that amount for 5 people, you aren't a restaurant!

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 23/12/2023 05:35

That looks like a lot of food to me, but if it's for a big group of people and nothing will be wasted then fair enough.

If we have a decent breakfast, which we will, then we wouldn't be having anything other than Christmas lunch (minus the pudding) followed by light evening snacks (sweet and savoury).

Finlesswonder · 23/12/2023 06:05

@JamieKnows
*all a bit childish. You're going over the top just because it's your last one unmarried? Why?

Your dad has to have his sticky toffee and you all have to eat a massive pastry breakfast because he does?

Your mum knows nobody likes Christmas pudding but she's doing it anyway?

You're feeding them excessive amounts of food at 1.30pm but are also insisting on a family dog walk somewhere before that? You won't forget about the Yule log because you've bought some plastic decorations and have to have chorizo because it's your favourite? Have it another day, same as the potatoes.

Your sister loves mash so even though it's Christmas Day she just has to have it? It's fucking mash mate, have it any other day. Christmas is for roasties.

Your brother sounds the only normal one. Unless he's the twat that's insisting on eating a starter he's personally made for himself whilst the other people at the table sit and wait.

Fucking bizarre. Are you all teenagers?*
This 100%!

Shutthefookup · 23/12/2023 06:44

Ridiculous amount of food for one meal.

3 types of potato, several starters, high carbohydrate mix for breakfast, then leftovers for evening?

No wonder there is such food wastage at Christmas.

Shutthefookup · 23/12/2023 07:11

Our Christmas menu
Breakfast:
Fresh fruit or juice, Coffee, yogurt and croissants.

Few nibbles(pretzels, olives etc) with pre meal drinks.

Main meal eaten at 1pm:
Turkey, pigs in blankets, sage onion and lemon stuffing, bread sauce, fresh cranberry sauce, roasties, carrots, parsnips, brussels with bacon and sesame seeds, peas, gravy.

Pudding: Christmas pudding and or mince pies, brandy butter, cream. Fruit also on offer.

Evening buffet: usually after 6 pm: rolls with various meats/cheeses (make/choose yourself) pork pie, fruit, dates and nuts, mincepies, yule log.

Boxing day evening meal: gammon joint, daphoinoise potatoes, savoury red cabbage and another veg of choice. Profiteroles /homemade trifle.

Lunch would be homemade soup such as creamy carrot or parsnip with cheese croutons/rolls/ sausage rolls/ mini quiche. Fruit.

AgnesX · 20/12/2023 16:04

Is it a buffet? If not ease off the hoover doofers. Cut back on some of the veg and desserts.

If it is a buffet, still cut back on some of the veg and up the quantity of pigs in blankets 😁

This made me smile. In our house growing up we called them 'horses doobahs'. Grin

Nannyfannybanny · 23/12/2023 08:38

One wonders if people actually read the post,as someone has put would be ok for a lot of people,we already know it's for 5!

greyshelving · 23/12/2023 08:41

It sounds delicious but a lot of what I'd think of as 'heavy food', lots of meat and carbs. Also if you're doing it all from scratch, I hope the cooks get time to relax too.

If someone is now bringing starters, I'd cut the Hors d'Oeuvres out completely so that people have space for the mains. And then I'd just offer two choices of puds, with an option to have something 'light' like a lemon mousse or meringue.

And unless you've got veggies or people with dietary requirements just consider one type of gravy.

My rule of thumb is...how can I create a lovely feast without completely knackering myself. :)

user1492757084 · 23/12/2023 08:43

That is So much food. You will have days of leftovers - which is actually really handy.

Hoiz · 23/12/2023 17:49

First pudding down! Had help from mum with rolling but very easy! Thanks Nigella. Fun to make until the very end when the icing sugar snow effect was ruined by a sieve with seemingly massive holes!

Not bad as a first attempt imo. May redo “snow”
