Someone in the group is insisting on a starter but they have agreed to taking responsibility. TBC.

This will all be homemade (apart from pastries in morning and ice cream) so it’s a lot of work - 2 main people doing it. A third person will likely pitch in a fair amount.

Is it a normal amount of food? First year hosting but any less would not be what my family is used to. But I’m doing a lot more homemade stuff whereas in previous years some of the snack stuff and desserts would be M and S.

Cut STP if you are having Christmas Pud.

may I suggest the opposite - I don't like mince pies, and find the texture, flavour, and ingredients overlap alot with Christmas pudding. So having both and cutting STP would be a shame as far as I'm concerned.

GMsAWinner · 20/12/2023 16:25

It's far more than we'd be having. If it's someone in your home that wants a starter, maybe they can prepare. Anyone else is being (unintentionally) ungrateful.

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:20

Which canapés would you scrap? I’m keeping chorizo and bacon as that’s my fav

It doesn’t matter if it’s your favourite, because you probably won’t get to eat it. You will be in the kitchen slaving away, making more food, clearing plates and glasses , loading and unloading the dishwasher, serving more food and pouring more drinks .

The day will be special because you are all togther having lovely food and drink. and if you have time to sit down and eat and drink with your guests.

Not because you have run yourself ragged providing a restaurant menu.

Im being direct here because I think you are well intentioned but inexperienced.

BrimfulOfMash · 20/12/2023 16:26

I wouldn’t have Yorkshire puddings with that meal either, but they might be sacrosanct!

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:27

STP is for my dad as it is his fav. Siblings prefer something chocolate-y hence the buche de noel.

My mum has already made the Xmas pudding

Far too much!
We have 7 people and two meats but only Roast potatoes and only (only!) 3 puds, one of which is sticky toffee pud.
No way would I prep all that, the amount of waste you could end up with is just money down the drain.

Celebrationsnakes · 20/12/2023 16:29

That's way too much. Will everyone be hungry enough to eat at 1.30 if you're doing a big breakfast then canapés in between? Could you push the main meal back a couple of hours?

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:30

My sis is a very good cook and I would say I’m above average. I try to make a new recipe every week and bake often. I make naan, pita, dinner rolls etc almost daily (wfh 3 days a week, no kids yet)

The desserts seem OTT, we are making two desserts for 10 people (plus one of my guests is bringing a home made Christmas pudding).

Mind, as long as it keeps for the next day or so it’s not the end of the world, but if you’re making it all from scratch you might be a little under pressure for no reason.

Luxell934 · 20/12/2023 16:32

I don't think I'd be able to eat a breakfast of croissants and cinnamon rolls, then nibbles inbetween and then a full on christmas lunch at 1.30pm and I've got a large appetite!

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:32

I can’t really think of a pudding everyone will like.

Room for 1 more 😊

Hoiz · 20/12/2023 16:33

Yeah it seems like a lot thinking about it. I pictured the HDs more as a buffet for people to graze whenever they fancied.

BIossomtoes · 20/12/2023 16:34

I’m exhausted just thinking about cooking that lot. And I’m cooking for 15 people on Boxing Day, what you’re proposing is far more daunting @Hoiz.

Notimeforaname · 20/12/2023 16:35

You're having a main meal AND a dinner ? ....

Gravelshoveling · 20/12/2023 16:35

Too much in my opinion.
I’d have thought main meal with pudding and mince pies is enough.

If we had all that breakfast we’d be way too full for the rest and feel very uncomfortably stuffed.
Even then, we like to get in a good walk to get an appetite up.

But each to their own.
If it’s what you would normally do then it’s ok.

GilesRupert · 20/12/2023 16:35

I love food but yeah that's too much. Just make more of fewer things.

VeryQuaintIrene · 20/12/2023 16:35

I love leftovers, and I think you will have a lot of them and won't need to cook for a week, so go for it!

Notimeforaname · 20/12/2023 16:35

Its only 5 people right?

BingoMarieHeeler · 20/12/2023 16:36

If you need a starter (hors d’oeurves) with your Xmas dinner then you’re doing the roast wrong 😄 <gavel>

You’ll have leftovers for days but I’d rather that that the opposite!!

ArchetypalBusyMum · 20/12/2023 16:36

That's PLENTY, no one is going to be feeling short changed at your house!

theduchessofspork · 20/12/2023 16:37

Some possible trims

Pret frozen croissants
Cinnamon rolls
Coffee
Bucks Fizz

  • fine - assuming you are buying in the rolls?

Houer D'oeuvres
Pigs in blanket (American style)
Chorizo and Scallops
Salmon and Cod Roe Blinis
Garlic Prawns
Caeser Salad skewer
You are having chicken and sausage with dinner
You don’t want garlic

Main Meal
Stuffed Chicken Joint
Roast Potatoes
Mash
Dauphinoise Potatoes
Honey Carrots
Bacon and Broccoli
Parsnips
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Pigs in blanket
Stuffing balls
Yorkshire pudding
Onion Gravy
Plain Gravy
(You don’t need different kinds of potatoes - it’s not thanksgiving. Yorkshire pudding is for beef. You don’t need broccoli. Onion gravy only if you have vegetarians. You could also knock off the stuffing and just have sausages and go for either carrots or cabbage if you wanted to streamline further)

Dessert
Sticky Toffee Pudding and Ice cream
Xmas Pudding
Yule Log
Cheese Platter
Mince Pies
You don’t need more than one pudding alternative.

Better go for the Yule log because it’s cold.

Deffo don’t need mince pies and pudding. Mince pies are to have with drinks pre Christmas Day etc, not the actual dinner
Move the cheese down to supper

Dinner
Leftovers
Cheeseboard

Drinks
Champagne
Wine
Bucks Fizz
Spicy Margharitas
how nice - personally I do like a desert wine and whisky for the evening..

gotomomo · 20/12/2023 16:37

I'd cut out some of the options eg one potato and cabbage and keep the cheese board back for later, I'd also only do pigs in blankets once!

I would however offer fruit at breakfast, possibly Greek yogurt and honey too as pastries give me stomach issues!

Wolvesart · 20/12/2023 16:37

Be inclined towards one fewer kind of potato and one more green veg. Couldn’t eat the dinner if there was so much beforehand. In the evening a bit if cheese and some of those pre starter things then instead.

What’s a chicken joint - it’s a bird. Is some sort of crown? If so, be sure you don’t have a houseful of those who prefer leg meat. Our trio will dine on a chicken (we don’t like turkey) and there will be an extra leg cooked alongside as we all prefer dark meat

PictureOfAPig · 20/12/2023 16:42

It's far too much IMO and you will all be full before you even sit down. I would move the meal to 7pm and not bother with dinner- your big breakfast and canapes will see you through.

Personally I would cut two of the potatoes, one gravy, Yorkshire pudding, either sprouts or cabbage not both, either STP or Christmas pud not both.
