Inspired by another thread.

Postie?
Hairdresser?
Cleaner?
Window cleaner?
Gardener?

Anyone else? Do you tip people who are in any way friends even if you pay them for a service? Do you give gifts rather than money?

This is making me nervous because I don’t have anything at all left to tip these people that I’m now worried are expecting it.

I’m on the bones of my arse scraping by to pay people just what I owe them in the first place.

beanontoast · 17/12/2023 20:11

I don’t tip beyond what I usually do all year round, which is 10% for hair and any other beauty stuff (nails etc). My postman is a twat and the bin men are also bastards so I wouldn’t give them anything. I do try to keep some cash for any nice delivery drivers but I’m pretty cashless so don’t always remember

Sunshineandrainbow · 17/12/2023 20:16

Hairdresser £10.00 don't tip rest of year as I feel awkward and it's one thing that puts me off going.
Postie £10
Evri £10

Bin lorry beer or chocs

Nobody should be expecting a tip, and most folk understand that not everyone is in a position to tip (or wants to).
Just do what you need to do to make sure you're ok, forget about tips.

Do none of you not get a bonus at work?

I’m shocked. I give my cleaner a big tip - months money, and time off.

I also do the same for our gardener, but pay summer rate, not Winter.

I then give my team a bonus of the same, including time off.

Without these people I couldn’t function.

No I don't get a bonus at work, neither do a lot of people. You're clueless at best.

As I was a teacher - no.

What's your point?

I mean, you kind of do get a tip as a teacher. We’ve all kicked in £10 per parent so our teachers are getting £300 in vouchers and two weeks paid leave. That’s a heck of a lot more than everyone’s cleaner!

(also a public sector worker).

WoollyRosebud · 17/12/2023 20:26

I tip my hairdresser £5 a visit and worry about that as he owns the business, is it necessary? He is however the best hairdresser I've had for many years.

Postie, nope because like others I have a couple plus others who deliver parcels. I like the PP's idea of taking a tub of sweets to the RM sorting office for them all.

The bin men come at stupid o'clock in the morning and I'm not leaving money out all night to be snaffled by anyone passing by. Nor am I getting up and lurking by the front door in my nightie to catch them.

This isn't across the board though - a lot of teachers won't get what you've given there!

Jeevesnotwooster · 17/12/2023 20:30

Postie £20
Staircleaner £25
Milkman £20
I always tip hairdressers and restaurants well anyway

Jeevesnotwooster · 17/12/2023 20:33

And I don't get any bonus now I'm public sector. Used to get a week's wages most of time in private sector. DH runs his company and gives his staff a Xmas bonus as well.

tomatoontoast · 17/12/2023 20:34

I don't tip.

Needhelpsupport · 17/12/2023 20:43

£10 for our lovely postie who entertains the dog 😂£10 for bin men who have an awful job !

Seriously, I'm gobsmacked that anyone can be so unaware of life outside their bubble.

Out of a total sample of 1.52 million employees, the proportion of individuals receiving a bonus was 16.4%

I'm surprised it's that hight to be honest. I only know one person who gets one, and that's in a classic significant role in an Insurance company.

It's not just public service that doesn't get them. It's anyone working in a job that's not classically professional. So shop workers, nursery staff, any trades/physical job....

If you're not on the team actually bringing in the contracts/profits, you can whistle.

l was a secondary teacher 26 years. I never got vouchers, flowers or anything else. Kids might buy me a little box of chocolates.

Staircleaner?
How often do you have your stairs cleaned?

MargaritaThyme · 17/12/2023 20:48

Nobody.

As I said in the binmen thread, tipping is unnecessary, outdated & feudal. These workers get paid for doing their jobs in the same way I do. They are not forelock-tugging serfs, and I am not lady bountiful.

Spaghettieis · 17/12/2023 20:48

Cleaner, tip her £10 and I’ve got her a box of chocolates.

We don’t pay for any other services (including hairdressing) and I don’t tip the postie or bin men - we don’t have a regular postie and the bin men come so early I’ve never met them.

Cornishclio · 17/12/2023 20:48

Just my hairdresser and manicurist. Our post service is dreadful so I would not tip them and the refuse collectors get paid a lot anyway. We do tip in restaurants normally anyway. No cleaner or gardener and the window cleaner owns his own company so don't tip him either. We are retired and don't get Christmas bonuses either.

You’re surprised it’s so high, I’m surprised it’s so low. There you go. I have worked in a shop, and guess what - we got a bonus.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/12/2023 20:51

Tip hairdresser every visit.
have bought a gift for my mum’s cleaner.
that’s it.

AnathemaPulsifer · 17/12/2023 20:52

I always give my cleaner an extra week’s money and a bottle of wine.

HardcoreLadyType · 17/12/2023 20:52

Hairdresser, person who does my eyebrows, postie. When we had a cleaner, we paid for the Christmas week, although she didn’t work it.
