Inspired by another thread.

Postie?
Hairdresser?
Cleaner?
Window cleaner?
Gardener?

Anyone else? Do you tip people who are in any way friends even if you pay them for a service? Do you give gifts rather than money?

OP posts:
F1ymetothetoon · 17/12/2023 18:57

Out of the list I only have a postie and not necessarily the same one day to day so nope I don't feel need to tip someone for merely doing the job they're paid to do.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 17/12/2023 18:57

I used to tip the bin men and post man but we no longer have regular ones and the device reflects that.

I tip the cleaner - in the sense of I pay her for the week she’s off and a box of chocolates.

I always tip the hairdresser £5 each time plus I take her a latte in so about £70 a year.
Same with the beautician.

I give the window cleanser double money plus a box of chocolates in December.

Do none of you not get a bonus at work?

I’m shocked. I give my cleaner a big tip - months money, and time off.

I also do the same for our gardener, but pay summer rate, not Winter.

I then give my team a bonus of the same, including time off.

Without these people I couldn’t function.

As I was a teacher - no.

What's your point?

Flamesatmytoes · 17/12/2023 18:55

I already pay well. Bonus really is a bonus and it’s increased in line with our profits. Profit share for those that create it if you will.

I know what you mean, but a windfall is also useful. If I had the worst year, I don’t want to be bankrupt, that helps no one.

Right, so it's a bonus rather than a tip, isn't it?
It's all strange to me, being public sector.
I personally don't like the culture of tipping because I do think it means that some employers keep wages low.

maras2 · 17/12/2023 19:00

Tesco delivery person £10 on Christmas Eve and New Year.

Ginandjuice57884 · 17/12/2023 19:00

Our postie is getting one this year because he's earned it. He's delivered parcels from companies that he isn't responsible for that have been misdelivered to other houses up our road which otherwise we would have known nothing about because said delivery companies are so useless that they don't know where they delivered them. He always goes above and beyond and is just a really nice guy.

Cadenza12 · 17/12/2023 19:02

Refuse collectors 20
Window cleaner 20
Postie wine
Supermarket delivery 10

Blanketpolicy · 17/12/2023 19:02

Waiters/barstaff - they are mostly students, get paid a pittance and dont get much holidays this peak time of year and missing out on partying.

Professionals and self employed no. They get salaries, or set their own prices.

Well I suppose I was thinking ‘private sector’, where bonus’ are common. The thread just had no, no, no, and I was surprised as bonus/tip is normal to me.

I was quick to surprise, but yes public sector, not even a Xmas party paid. Not my world but this has reminded me.

DataColour · 17/12/2023 19:04

I give the piano teacher a bottle of wine, that's it! No cleaner/ gardener etc. oh I gave a big box of Ferraro Rocher to the lovely lady who runs an amazing creative art workshop for teens which my DD attends.

I have no clue who our bin men or postman is.... I'm not there when they come.

Motheranddaughter · 17/12/2023 19:06

Cleaner,milk boy,paper boy
Gift to hairdresser and beautician
2 weeks pay to cleaner
£20 to the others

F1ymetothetoon · 17/12/2023 19:06

@Flamesatmytoes you seem to be in a very fortunate financial position and I'm happy for you. In my old job working in job centre/benefit office a bonus for me would be not to be called a fucking cunt or fucking bitch in the week before Christmas 😂

purser25 · 17/12/2023 19:07

Postman Window cleaner Milkman and the bin men of which we have 3 different crews garden general and recycling all a large tub of sweets the bin men are particularly pleased

enchantedsquirrelwood · 17/12/2023 19:08

Do none of you not get a bonus at work not at Christmas, no.

And I am too working class to have "staff" like a cleaner (or gardener). I do my own cleaning, and DH does the gardening. I don't give him a tip Grin

SallyWD · 17/12/2023 19:09

I gave my hairdresser a bigger tip than usual (£10). We have three cleaners who come together and I'll tip them £20 and a box of chocolates each.
I've never tipped the postman. I don't even know what he/she looks like. They always seem to be changing.

Well I pay all of them, so bonus, tip all that matters is they get extra. I call it a bonus as tip means small (to me), but it’s linked to Xmas. I give my office team another bonus at Easter too, but more modest.

My team def earn above market rate, they are above average. Again, no pay scale constraints so it’s up to me.

Honestly, I try to be a good employer. My cleaner now runs her own business, but she still comes to me, I’m her only cleaning gig.

Not ever!

MollyButton · 17/12/2023 19:10

I'm public sector but deal with a lot of private sector people - and I can assure you most people do not get a bonus at all.
And I don't tip anyone - most of them earn more than me anyway.

Cadenza12 · 17/12/2023 19:11

Btw public sector workers get holiday, sick pay and pensions. A lot of these jobs don't come with these as standard. I remember one delivery guy was nearly dead on his feet, said not only did he not get paid he got fined if he didn't turn up. Supermarket delivery people don't get paid extra if they are late back, so stuck in traffic is just their bad luck.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 17/12/2023 19:11

I have to budget and be careful about spending at Christmas. I don’t have the money for twenty quids to postmen and bin men etc etc. Am l unusual?

Yeah, that’s pretty shit. I hope you get a quiet Christmas season.

Missingmyusername · 17/12/2023 19:13

Refuse staff £50 - I work for the local authority so they know us. They will come and get our bins, we don’t put them out.
Hairdresser bottle vodka.
Gardener bottle whisky.
Window cleaner nothing because they don’t do a great job.
Don't have a cleaner.
Dog groomer bottle of wine, chocolates and flowers because she is lovely.
Teachers flowers and candle.

OhmygodDont · 17/12/2023 19:13

Nobody ever. We have minimum wage. I don’t get tipped for doing a job that’s means many other people can do their jobs.

Lovelynames123 · 17/12/2023 19:16

I routinely tip anyway so probably just give a bit more at Xmas. My staff love getting tips, we always get more in December plus tubs of sweets from regular customers. We share out the tips on the 23rd, plus we'll give staff a cash bonus plus a bottle of something, to show our appreciation of them.
