How can I make £1000 quickly?

QuestionableMouse · 16/12/2023 10:01

Not a begging thread! Even if people offered money I wouldn't take it!

My car caught fire driving home from work last night. The engine is fucked and it'll never run again. I'll get probably £3-400 scrap value for it so that's a start. Realistically looking at about £1000 for a new car - I can't get to work without one (genuinely - the closest public transport stops miles away and due to the condition of the lanes it's not safe to walk the rest of the way!)

I'm sorting some stuff out to go on vinted which might get me another £50 or so. And some models/pocket dragons that will get about the same.

A loan or a credit card isn't an option - I'm already struggling monthly without adding another payment!

@gaz4stace How do you get into low risk casino betting? It sounds easier than matched betting?

margotrose · 16/12/2023 11:36

If there was a quick and easy way to make £1000 fast, everyone would be doing it.

I know you said you don't want to take on any more debt but if you can't get to work without a car, you probably don't have a choice.

Switch your bank account - Nationwide offering £200 to use their switch service. Plus, if you’re eligible they’ll give you an overdraft that’s interest-free for 12 months.

You don’t just get £200 the day you open the account. 😂

Pozz · 16/12/2023 11:39

Part time temporary driving job?

Pozz · 16/12/2023 11:39

Obviously I mean where vehicle is included

gaz4stace · 16/12/2023 11:40

@superstar63 have a look at a website called Team Casino, you get the first week for 99p then its £14.99 per month. It explains it all and gives very clear guides/warnings and tells you of all the offers to do to make the £. You have to follow it carefully, but most offers are pretty straight forward and you soon get used to it. Some people make loads more than me but I just stick to low risk offers and am making a solid £300 per month on average.

Evaka · 16/12/2023 11:44

Have a look around your house for more stuff you can sell on ebay. Think beyond clothes - small appliances you don't use, cosmetics etc. I've made 250 this week between eBay and vinted, selling things like an open but barely used Jo Malone perfume.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/12/2023 11:45

I’d ask around locally for anything, babysitting, pub, shop work… cash in hand if poss.

Sell things on eBay or vinted or have a yard sale. I’ve done well and bought things like eg Christmas sets, unwanted gifts, recently on eBay, massage set, Christmas themed new bed socks.

If you have a head for numbers, then this is genuinely a 100% fail safe way to make money. Totally guaranteed. (Trust me, I'm an accountant!).

You can make £500 easily this way. Possibly £1000 if there are lots of free bet offers around from the book makers. Note that the profit is made by hedging bets. It is not made by simply speculating.

Babysitting, pet sitting, present wrapping, cleaning, ironing etc. How do you make £1000 relatively quickly from these? You just put an add to a local Facebook group how you will wrap their present or babysit their kid and they will just hire you? Or join an agency? I'm struggling to understand how these are profitable without building it like a business?

FudgeSundae · 16/12/2023 11:47

If you have time, could you offer a service to put up/take down Xmas decs? I’d happily pay someone, say £70 not to tidy Xmas lights and muck about with boxes in January!

AnotherDayAnotherDoller · 16/12/2023 11:48

The quickest way I would say would be to loan the 1000 if you possibly can - there's some not bad deals around that will give you interest free for a period if you can qualify.
Then take on extra part time work to repay.
Cash in hand work is harder to find now and most agencies have an employment process which won't likely be quick at this time of year.

You don't - people just seem to think you can!

I dog walk/pet sit for a living and in my first month of opening I probably made less than £100 Grin it's not the easy money maker people seem to think, especially as OP doesn't have a vehicle, or insurance, or equipment, or a license to have pets in her home...

Peacheroo · 16/12/2023 11:52

Is the courtesy car through insurance? Be careful you don't end up paying for that if you can't claim it back on insurance.

Could you get a loan? Car prices have dropped 4.2% for both the last two months plus a mid month adjustment of 1.5% so it's good timing. Still sky high but less so.

Car rental is not cheap though, quite the opposite

True, but I checked by me (and it will vary by location) and two weeks over Xmas was £500 - half of what the OP is looking to raise. Taking everything into consideration it might be better to have transport and continue to save /work to raise extra over potentially losing money because she can’t work. At least until she knows what the insurance company might pay out.

Nosleepforthismum · 16/12/2023 11:55

Look into Rover and set up as a dog boarder or as someone who stays in peoples homes and looks after their pets while they are away. My sister earns good money doing this on the side.

Not for this offer - 10 days after the switch has completed, and the switch process has a 7-day guarantee. So less than 3 weeks.

You can't board dogs in your home without a license from the council.

You can pet-sit without a license but you won't make £1000 from it very quickly.

Octonaut4Life · 16/12/2023 11:58

Could you look at a temporary solution like getting a moped instead of a car? It's a lot cheaper but only practical if you don't need to drive on the motorway etc.

I found once when I used Bubble to do babysitting it was hard work (harder than when I was a teen) and mostly based on good reviews and lots of people doing it.

If I had to babysit now, I’d post on Facebook groups or even let local school mums know at school gate that I’m available and trustworthy. (Primary school 2 mins from my house!).

JoyeuxNarwhal · 16/12/2023 12:00

Would your employer be able to lend you a vehicle?

Exactly, handyman (woman!) service offering seasonal and other duties.

People I know who host extended families over Christmas would love extra help then, clearing up etc, some already have cleaners but if not from UK they often go home for Xmas.
