How can I make £1000 quickly?

QuestionableMouse · 16/12/2023 10:01

Not a begging thread! Even if people offered money I wouldn't take it!

My car caught fire driving home from work last night. The engine is fucked and it'll never run again. I'll get probably £3-400 scrap value for it so that's a start. Realistically looking at about £1000 for a new car - I can't get to work without one (genuinely - the closest public transport stops miles away and due to the condition of the lanes it's not safe to walk the rest of the way!)

I'm sorting some stuff out to go on vinted which might get me another £50 or so. And some models/pocket dragons that will get about the same.

A loan or a credit card isn't an option - I'm already struggling monthly without adding another payment!

The only way really is to take out a 0% purchase credit card to buy a cheap runaround. Lots of cards with around 20 months 0% to pay it off. Look on money saving expert. You could then sell off your stuff or find extra work to start paying it back over 20 months.

Ideas like ironing, babysitting, pet sitting, cleaning etc are good but aren’t going to get you £1000 overnight and how could you even do them without transport, equipment, insurances, DBS checks etc.

Selling off stuff takes time too. So I would do this after to pay back what you’ve borrowed.

KimGa · 16/12/2023 11:13

Maybe pop a message on local facebook or similar asking if anyone has a car they’re not using at the moment that you can borrow whilst you save for the new one?

loudbatperson · 16/12/2023 11:13

No suggestions of quick money making other than selling..... even starting an extra job will likely take a couple of weeks and then the wait for first pay.

I am not sure of the cost but would a car club be feasible for you in terms of local availability and cost?

I was looking at one locally that had a very low yearly fee and you pay for hour of car use (you don't have one set car , you book a car that's near you.

This would only work if you're in a city or similar I would imagine, and I am not sure of cost. But potentially a solution until you can get a car.

BippityBobbityBoo · 16/12/2023 11:15

I switched bank accounts recently, was really easy.

I agree though that you need to be doing this after you have borrowed the money. Can you up your overdraft?

some more idea’s here

What???

TheSquareMile · 16/12/2023 11:16

Have you been able to speak to your employer about the situation and might he/she be able to assist in some way?

I am assuming that you will need to find a way of getting to work on Monday.

2dogsandabudgie · 16/12/2023 11:16

When do you need the £1000 by? Monday?

PermanentTemporary · 16/12/2023 11:17

Agree with putting out the word to literally everyone you know that you are looking for work shifts and also for any reliable but inexpensive cars.

I think you need to pound the streets a bit, can you go into pubs with your CV and be flexible, could you work Christmas Day morning, New Year's Day?

I pay a lot of money to my gardener, obviously it's not exactly the ideal time of year but it can be decent money if anyone needs help.

ginasevern · 16/12/2023 11:18

@2dogsandabudgie

"About 5 years ago we sold my car for £250"

As someone who has always paid around £400 to £600 for a car (never owned one that cost more) I can attest to the fact that those days are sadly long gone. "Old bangers" took a leap in price during the pandemic for a whole host of reasons and a car that would've cost £500 is now selling for around £1,000 to £1,500. Buying a "throw away" runaround for £250 (which I have also done on several occasions) is but a pipe dream these days I'm afraid.

mamma65432 · 16/12/2023 11:18

You could try advertising on FB one off deep kitchen/bathroom cleans, that seems popular here - £150 for 6 hours.

BippityBobbityBoo · 16/12/2023 11:18

Also check if you have any credit on your energy bill or any cash back you may have forgotten?

also try and cut back your current spending, look for free trials of gousto/hello fresh etc

QuestionableMouse · 16/12/2023 11:19

I'm set until after Christmas - have a courtesy car until Friday then can use my mum's car for a few days.

Glad to hear it OP. I've been in your position and with a poor credit rating too.

Nicole1111 · 16/12/2023 11:20

Air bnb your flat and move in with your mum for a few weeks?

gaz4stace · 16/12/2023 11:21

I think finding that amount of money so quickly will be impossible. I think you should consider an interst free spending credit card, you would then get up to about 18 months without having to repay anything, in the meantime you could try one of the suggestions to earn more money. I make about £300 a month from going low risk casino. It's fun, from home, tax free and I can fit it in with everything else as theres no time commitment. Matched betting is also an idea. Theres a long running thread on earn £10 per day somewhere on the money matters part of chat where there's lots of ideas for side hustles. You should fairly easily be able to repay £1000 ish over a year or so by doing some of the things on there.

TheGoogleMum · 16/12/2023 11:21

Could your mum lend you the money? Mum's don't usually charge interest. Should give you more time to make the extra £1000

LaurieStrode · 16/12/2023 11:21

Cleaning, organizing, gift wrapping; can you post on Next Door offering an extra pair of hands to people within walking distance?

My organizer charges 120 for four hours & requires cash up front before beginning work.

KimGa · 16/12/2023 11:23

We have two old bangers, both in use a lot at weekends term time to get kids to different sporting matches but if someone local on my village Facebook was desperate for transport I’d loan it Mon-Fri if they paid for their own petrol. I’ve seen people ask for similar loans of things on ours and neighbours stepping up.

I think you still have to do minimum payment for interest free credit cards, and you need some money to start matched betting usually. I think it's possible to start with quite a small amount but you make a lot less

I wish people would stop saying "ironing".

I did do ironing as a business at home, it took me 6 months to build up a decent, regular clientele and it was hard bloody work. Not something you do to raise money "quickly". And my best customers were the ones that I collected from and delivered to.

Cleaning is a possibility, but in offices after hours, not in people's houses which is usually done during the day.

The other option is some casual work in pubs etc who might need extra help over Christmas.

It might be that you need to take out a loan for the car and THEN take on extra work in order to pay it off.

Agree, lodger as well, and dog walker often mentioned. There are loads of people doing this already, and you need insurance.

I agree also there's no easy way to get a grand quickly unless you are lucky enough to win it.

DomPom47 · 16/12/2023 11:25

Is there a close friend or family member you could ask to borrow some
money from?

tescocreditcard · 16/12/2023 11:26

Don't forget to check your topcashback and quidco accounts you might have a few quid in those you've forgotten about.

DeedlessIndeed · 16/12/2023 11:31

Do you do cashback?

I always forget to withdraw the balance out after transactions have actually been approved. Only recently I went online for xmas shopping and realised I had almost £100 in there.

It might only be a small amount, but it might add up with other bits.

Ditto with clubcard points and any un-used gift cards stuck in a drawer somewhere.

NoSquirrels · 16/12/2023 10:05

Switch your bank account - Nationwide offering £200 to use their switch service. Plus, if you’re eligible they’ll give you an overdraft that’s interest-free for 12 months.

There's about 5 banks which do this, you need to have 2 direct debits and pay a min amount in each month t qualify, so as long as you have multiple direct debits you could open more than one.
It could take a few weeks to get all the cash though

NerdyIsMyMiddleName · 16/12/2023 11:33

Is there anything that you know well enough to tutor it online at all? You can do that in the evening, and all you need is a good internet connection and a camera.
