How can I make £1000 quickly?

QuestionableMouse · 16/12/2023 10:01

Not a begging thread! Even if people offered money I wouldn't take it!

My car caught fire driving home from work last night. The engine is fucked and it'll never run again. I'll get probably £3-400 scrap value for it so that's a start. Realistically looking at about £1000 for a new car - I can't get to work without one (genuinely - the closest public transport stops miles away and due to the condition of the lanes it's not safe to walk the rest of the way!)

I'm sorting some stuff out to go on vinted which might get me another £50 or so. And some models/pocket dragons that will get about the same.

A loan or a credit card isn't an option - I'm already struggling monthly without adding another payment!

Switch your bank account - Nationwide offering £200 to use their switch service. Plus, if you’re eligible they’ll give you an overdraft that’s interest-free for 12 months.

Nationwide are taking ages to open accounts....I waited two weeks then cancelled my application and opened one with First Direct instead, it was open the next day. First Direct pay £175

barbieofswanlake · 16/12/2023 12:54

Get a interest free credit card, you'll still need to pay back the minimum payment each month but you won't be accruing interest for the introductory period - you can compare on moneysavingexpert

I'm set until after Christmas - have a courtesy car until Friday then can use my mum's car for a few days.

I'm pleased you have a temporary solution, hopefully it will lead to a permanent one! I hope things look up for you soon 😄.

margotrose · 16/12/2023 12:56

Well, switching bank accounts can make you a few hundred quite quickly, and most of us aren't doing that, so your logic doesn't really follow.

A few hundred pounds isn't a thousand, though Confused

And lots of people do regularly switch bank accounts for that exact reason.

AInightingale · 16/12/2023 13:04

Does where you live have a local FB group where you can ask about lifts (from another woman, obv) from your town to your work town for a few weeks, while you raise cash? Some people would be prepared to help with your commute if you were contributing towards the fuel costs, they're sky-high atm.

imaceleb2023 · 16/12/2023 13:05

i made £300 doing matched betting with all the initial sign up offers. saying that though, to make the money quick, you need some money to put into it, as for each bet you do which would give you back £15 or so pounds, you sometimes need around £80 to put into your betfair account to make that money. Please no-one start a debate about the legality, morality etc of matched betting. i did it during the pandemic and the job centre okay'd it as a legit way to make money.

Shopper727 · 16/12/2023 13:08

Doesn't your insurance cover fire?

Your insurance doesn't cover anything caused by a mechanical fault. They will have to look into it to see the cause of the fire, they have specialists that do this. So there is a chance of a payout but slim.

ThereIbledit · 16/12/2023 13:25

Matched betting, if you are sensible and calm and rational enough to read about it properly and follow instructions to the letter. I started with £80, and fiddled about very part time over the pandemic to make around £4500 in 3 years, but the first £1000 is fairly quick to reach. Happy to answer sensible questions over DM.

To the inevitable people who are going to tell me to not be so stupid to recommend risky gambling, please don't bother - your money is NOT being "gambled" in the sense that it is at risk - your money is only at risk if you don't follow the instructions exactly. It is legal and tax free. Martin Lewis has blogged about it as a legitimate way to make money, several times over many years.

There certainly used to be a thread or several on here for those of us who were doing it.

Not for this offer - 10 days after the switch has completed, and the switch process has a 7-day guarantee. So less than 3 weeks.

If you deposit £1250!

BMW6 · 16/12/2023 13:36

I think you're going to have to get a small loan

NoSquirrels · 16/12/2023 13:42

AnneValentine · 16/12/2023 13:32

If you deposit £1250!

Most people will be switching their current account balance over, and their wages will get paid in. If it’s still not at £1250 then you can do a transfer out again to a savings account or similar, and then pay it back in again. That counts.

Cornettoninja · 16/12/2023 13:45

Needsomesupport84 · 16/12/2023 12:27

Lol and what will she do after the two weeks is up? Will she have magicked up a new car by then? Seriously, some people 🤦‍♀️

Alright snippy bollocks, back off.

It was a short term suggestion to keep OP on the road and able to work if there was likely to be an insurance payout forthcoming.

Milkybarsareonmeeeee · 16/12/2023 13:48

Are you not able to get a courtesy car through your insurance.
As I was going to suggest Amazon flex . You down load the app put in your details pick and area you would like to cover abs you can work hours to suit

Good luck it’s horrible when you can’t get out the bit . The switching account sounds good

uncomfortablydumb53 · 16/12/2023 13:50

I'm sorry, what terrible timing for you
The best option I can think of is a credit card obviously lowest interest possible
MSE has a credit card eligibility calculator then throw any spare money you have at repayment
Credit union is a possibility but I don't know if you have to be a member for a specified time to get a loan
Could your employer help in any way?

Hankunamatata · 16/12/2023 13:50

E bike though cycle to work with employer?

ectoone · 16/12/2023 13:51

@Peacheroo

I have never had a policy that didn't cover fire. Without knowing OP policy details you cannot say for certain the car is not covered for fire.

Needsomesupport84 · 16/12/2023 13:52

Hankunamatata · 16/12/2023 13:50

She works in a private house, maybe as a nanny or housekeeper I’m guessing. So I doubt they will have a cycle to work scheme.

CoolShoeshine · 16/12/2023 13:52

Could you make do with a moped instead of a car?

Peacheroo · 16/12/2023 13:53

ectoone · 16/12/2023 13:51

@Peacheroo

I have never had a policy that didn't cover fire. Without knowing OP policy details you cannot say for certain the car is not covered for fire.

No insurance pays for mechanical failure of a vehicle. To be covered, the vehicle needs to be roadworthy. If a mechanical failure or lack of maintenance causes it to set on fire then I'd be keen to suggest it wasn't roadworthy.

They do cover fire not caused by mechanical failure.

They will cover it but the problem is that they don’t pay out the amount needed to actually replace the car. If I crashed my car and wrote it off, I’d get about £3,000 in payout but if I wanted an equivalent car I’d need about £10,000.

Peacheroo · 16/12/2023 13:57

@Needsomesupport84 they should pay a book price which is the amount that car is worth now. You're always short and it really is a shitter BUT you should be able to send three examples of the exact same car and the sale price and they then match that. The problem is people will have a 1.5 petrol Passat with 200k and send an example of a 2.0 diesel Passat with 10k and wonder why they aren't the same price.

Makkacakka · 16/12/2023 13:59

Switching bank is a great way to earn hundreds but certainly not quick. You don't receive the money instantly. You have to wait weeks or months usually.

MadameCamembert · 16/12/2023 14:04

As others have said, you’ve not option really but to borrow the money and then find a way to pay it back. 0% card or bank of Mum being the best options. You could then fairly easily pick up one shift a week (cleaning or in a bar etc) to pay this off. I’d be tempted, depending on the offer(s) given, to actually spend a little more and get something more reliable. Even at £2000 your minimum payment would be around £50-ish per month on a 0% so highly achievable with a little side line job.

Won't you get money off your insurance?

Car insurance does not cover mechanical. faults.
