Is 7 pints excessive?

spaceandstar · 16/12/2023 03:42

I mean, what's the standard amount of pints a man has when they go for drinks?

DP drank on an empty stomach, 7 pints and is now throwing up for the past 2 hours (making noises that mean I can't for the life of my sleep).

To be honest, I'm emetophobic so I just want the clarity that that amount of alcohol makes sense to end up throwing up and that it is not likely to be some sort of contagious virus.

Its a bit much on an empty stomach but with a meal mine could manage that without throwing up. He's a regular drinker though, all the factors make a difference. I'm done after one! 🤣

randomstress · 16/12/2023 03:45

My DH would be sick in the same circumstances now and he isn't small or light.
When younger he might have survived with both more than a hangover.

Flyingalone · 16/12/2023 03:51

It's 4 litres of beer. Crazy amounts.

Plus if he's so drunk he's throwing up then I DOUBT he managed to actually keep track of how much he's drank Confused As if.
He's prob drank way more.

TheFairyCaravan · 16/12/2023 03:54

DH would be throwing up after 7 pints too. However I’m an emetophobe, too, so he doesn’t drink that much. We’ve been married 30yrs and he’s never been so drunk that he’s thrown up in front of me, and nor have our kids.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Have you got some noise cancelling headphones you could play some music or white noise through to dampen the noise a bit?

brainworms · 16/12/2023 04:00

That's a LOT of beer. What an absolute Muppet. That'll teach him.

spaceandstar · 16/12/2023 04:01

@TheFairyCaravan my DP doesn't usually drink either - which has probably only made him worse!!

I have to listen out for the toddler through the night so unfortunately can't use noise cancelling anything. I do just find the noise unbearable!

everyredsock · 16/12/2023 04:03

That would make me sick. But DH would have that much and be drunk but not sick. However he is very, very tall and 18 stone.

spaceandstar · 16/12/2023 04:05

@everyredsock yeah I can't say the same for DP - he's taller than average but only 10.5st!

Is 7 pints excessive? In old fashioned speak, add 1 more pint and it is a gallon.

An average person has about 10 pints of blood in them.

Just saying 🤮

SgtJuneAckland · 16/12/2023 06:06

In old fashioned language in these parts it's known as a skin full and on an empty stomach it's no surprise he's sick, don't worry OP it's not contagious

Chilicabbage · 16/12/2023 06:06

On empty stomach anything is excessive. If one wants to drink, one has to eat. Basic rule I learned as a teenager (who managed more than 7 pints and still can, notgrew up in UK). Stella makes me throw up after 2, so does carling and carlsberg no matter what I eat. 😶Shite beers.

GaryLurcher19 · 16/12/2023 06:12

It may or may not be excessive. Depends on the timescale.

6 hours? Not remotely excessive.

Hour and half? Very excessive.

I'm assuming it was somewhere in between an hour and six hours, but how long exactly?

Kittenkitty · 16/12/2023 06:14

in case you don’t know this OP NHS talking therapies treats this 😊

Pipistrellus · 16/12/2023 06:16

More than four pints for a man is excessive and binge drinking

LovelyDaaling · 16/12/2023 06:20

My husband is 10 stone. Any more than three pints and he'll be sick.

Peacheroo · 16/12/2023 06:21

On an empty stomach, easy to be sick with that. As I get older, I realise that some times I can drink 7 pints and be fine, sometimes I'm close to death and any variation in the middle.

I hope he's ok. It's bloody horrible isn't it.

I'm going to assume it's a Christmas type affair and whilst he may fall into the very loose category of binge drinking, it's just a few extra drinks. No biggie. It'll probably be a while now before he does it again 😂

YireosDodeAver · 16/12/2023 06:24

Not remotely surprising that he's sick. What a selfish arsehole. How old is he? Most decent adults have the maturity to work out that moderation is more fun by about age 28 or so.

in case you don’t know this OP NHS talking therapies treats this 😊

The NHS is overwhelmed with number of people who drink a bottle of vodka for breakfast. They're unlikely to find resources to offer therapy to a bloke who once* managed 7 pints and was sick as a result.

*if it was regular he wouldn't be sick

Chilicabbage · 16/12/2023 06:36

I assumed pp meant therapy for emetophobia?

You mean 7 pints over 2 weeks as a legitimate and healthy timeframe.

7 pints in a day, no matter how far apart they’re spaced is binge drinking.

Don't be daft.

TravelInHope · 16/12/2023 06:41

My DH tells me that 2 pints is comfortable for him, 3 pints is too much and makes him feel unsteadily drunk. He can drink more wine over a meal though.

GaryLurcher19 · 16/12/2023 06:45

You may be right. And that would make sense.

Sorry, PP. The talk of therapy seemed a bit OTT, but MN is well known for going a bit excessive when alcohol is mentioned.

Youwantapizzame · 16/12/2023 06:45

It's not a sickness bug OP, it's 7 pints on an empty stomach. You won't be sick, he's done this to himself!

Over an evening with food my DH would be drunk on 7 pints but probably not sick. 7 pints on an empty stomach and he'd be very sick indeed and probably need putting to bed.

I doubt he will be rushing to drink that much again on an empty stomach any time soon, OP!!

Hoglet70 · 16/12/2023 06:47

I'm also emetophobic so me and DH have had lots of arguments in the past about drinking as he can be a puker. Some people are sick after 3 pints, some people are never sick but I would say 7 pints on an empty stomach has a good chance of making a lot of people sick and I'm pretty sure it's not a virus and you are quite safe.

My top tip is I book myself into a hotel when DH is off drinking without me as it's not worth me stressing myself out about. If I'm also drinking I am more relaxed about it.
