Is 7 pints excessive?

spaceandstar · 16/12/2023 03:42

I mean, what's the standard amount of pints a man has when they go for drinks?

DP drank on an empty stomach, 7 pints and is now throwing up for the past 2 hours (making noises that mean I can't for the life of my sleep).

To be honest, I'm emetophobic so I just want the clarity that that amount of alcohol makes sense to end up throwing up and that it is not likely to be some sort of contagious virus.

It a good night out, but once in a while it's fine. We are out tonight, I imagine DH will have 5-6pints plus shots and possibly rum. Will no doubt be tipsy on the way home but not ill. We only drink 3-4times a year so it's not tolerance it picking your drinks well and not drinking super strength larger all night

Ggttl · 16/12/2023 10:16

It also depends on the type of beer. The alcohol content varies a lot. Some of the craft beers are much higher in alcohol than the average lager.

10HailMarys · 16/12/2023 10:27

There’s no ‘standard’ amount of beer that will make a man sick, but yeah, if he rarely drinks then seven pints on an empty stomach would probably do it.

RudsyFarmer · 16/12/2023 09:28

Bloody hell. Why did he drink seven pints on an empty stomach? Consuming that amount of liquid is bizarre to me.

Edited

What if you're out for six or seven hours? One drink an hour isn't exactly knocking back multiple shots.

Pipistrellus · 16/12/2023 10:45

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/12/2023 09:09

Maybe but there’s also a lot of people who normalise highly dysfunctional drinking so it probably evens out.

Seven pints is well over a third of the recommended weekly intake for a man. For a blow out it doesn’t equate to him having a drink problem but if he’s doing that every time he drinks he is not doing himself any favours.

Recommended is 14 units a week. A pint is 2 units.

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/12/2023 09:36

That's exactly my point. It's the kind of stupid behaviour you can get away with once in a blue moon. You can't be doing it every weekend.

No its not. Its stupid behaviour whenever

Mumsnet is always the wrong place to ask if anyone has drank more than 2 pints or 2 gin and
tonics.

People always trot this old chestnut out. Usually because the poster has made them feel uncomfortable about their own alcohol consumption.

We aren’t talking about two pints, we are talking about seven.

I agree.

7 pints in one evening is binge drinking

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/12/2023 10:56

@Pipistrellus

Recommended is 14 units a week. A pint is 2 units.

For women yes. For men it’s 21. Still a lot of booze in one sitting and not saying it’s good but men are able to metabolise it more easily than women.

LeaveBritneyAlone · 16/12/2023 10:57

The wuss 🤣 if I was out-out 7 pints would be standard

Exactly. I like a drink now and then, usually one, occasionally two strong ciders a couple of hours apart, 3 units per bottle so the equivalent of three pints of the 4% stuff if I have two pints. I am hardly teetotal. I don't know why people assume that those saying it is excessive don't drink.

Daft bugger. Hopefully he will learn from this. I think most people would be throwing up after 7 pints, unless they are serious pissheads.

I certainly like my beer, but 3 or 4 pints is plenty for me. Any more than that & I would start to feel sick & unpleasantly drunk.

Sartre · 16/12/2023 11:08

I drank 7 pints once when I was younger and I was vomiting too. Beer is extremely heavy and makes your stomach full. It’s part of the reason why they drank so much beer in the medieval era - because it was cheap and filled you up. So in short, yes 7 pints is too much beer.

Growlybear83 · 16/12/2023 11:09

I think it depends on his age and how often he drinks. My husband and his friends would very often have drunk that much in their 20s and not even appear very drunk, but now he's much older and very rarely drinks, he would be really pissed on four pints.

DH often drinks too much quite a lot without ill effect. He could easily be fine after 1.5 bottles of wine, but usually accompanied by food. He rarely drinks beers or spirits. He did get completely trollied on spirits earlier in the year and had been drinking on an empty stomach. He wasn't sick but it's the worst hangover I've seen him have (I was very unsympathetic!🤣)

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/12/2023 11:19

So it is! Fair enough.

I think a lot of people justify drinking well over the recommended amounts because they see lots of other people do the same.
My DH drinks well over the recommended weekly units but if we socialise with family they are often drinking similar amounts so it seems normal.
In the same way that lots of MN people have unhealthy relationships with food, a lot of people have unhealthy alcohol consumption but there's almost a safety in numbers attitude...lots of people are doing it so its normal/ok

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 16/12/2023 11:22

As Homer Simpson said "Alcohol the answer to all life's problems and the cause of them."
The problem is that it is neurotoxin so once it affects you it has already impacted on that part of your brain that is saying don't have another pint you are drunk. Hence 7 pints later and a chat on the porcelain telephone.

Ah give over. I hardly touch the stuff. Threads like these always get someone frothing at the mouth.

widowtwankywashroom · 16/12/2023 11:28

A lot of pearl clutching on here this morning, its 7 pints! over the course of late afternoon evening, it could be one drink an hour!
Its the empty stomach that is the issue!

jolies1 · 16/12/2023 11:28

Over the course of an evening and not ridiculous strength beer? Ex rugby playing brothers with a kebab somewhere in the evening would be absolutely fine. DP maxes out about 5 over the course of an evening (say 7pm - midnight) and is fine. Totally depends on body type - his own fault for not eating first as it would make most ill on an empty stomach. He’s been a bit daft but unless he is doing it every weekend put it down to too much “holiday spirit” and if you’re feeling kind make him a bacon sandwich.

Sux2buthen · 16/12/2023 11:30

Meh, fair play to him. A night out does you good sometimes
Hope you have a lovely festive day op

Agree 100%
I am sick of hearing about the COL crisis, the Christmas markets at this time of year are making a bloody fortune, pubs, restaurants are bursting!
I have been out for breakfast twice this week and both places were buzzing
Yes there are people in financial difficulties, but not everyone!
