Is 7 pints excessive?

spaceandstar · 16/12/2023 03:42

I mean, what's the standard amount of pints a man has when they go for drinks?

DP drank on an empty stomach, 7 pints and is now throwing up for the past 2 hours (making noises that mean I can't for the life of my sleep).

To be honest, I'm emetophobic so I just want the clarity that that amount of alcohol makes sense to end up throwing up and that it is not likely to be some sort of contagious virus.

People are so crazy, selfish arsehole for having 7 pints on a Christmas night out when he hasn't been out drinking all year? Hilarious!

He enjoyed himself, he will pay for it today. No big deal.

PaperDoIIs · 16/12/2023 08:39

He hasn't worked out by his age that binge drinking might make him sick? My teen knows his limits.

It doesn't always work that way. I got sick twice in the past 20 years, and both times I drunk within what I knew to be my limits. For some reason those two times(this year and 5 years ago) it just hit me funny. Possibly eating too much/quickly beforehand.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 16/12/2023 08:40

That's a weeks worth of alcohol in one night so yes excessive

HotGirlInHell · 16/12/2023 08:40

I would drink that on a night out - probably did last week at my Christmas night out because it was 7 hours long.

Bit of a sore head the next day but fine.

Icantbedoingwithit · 16/12/2023 08:45

I understand the absolute horror of listening to it OP. I am an emetaphobe too and although I know it is from the drink and it’s not a bug and there is no way I will catch it, I can not explain the anxiety that listening to someone throw up gives me. That said, 7 pints in one sitting is excessive for anyone whether you can handle it or not. People will argue that they could walk a tightrope and be fine after 7 pints but that just shows how high their tolerance is. Nearly a gallon of beer is excessive for anyone in one go but you will always have those who think it is a badge of honour.

Frasers · 16/12/2023 08:50

There is a lot of fear or horror over alcohol on here. 7 pints on a night out, is not the sort of thing you need to go seek nhs treatment for. He over indulged. Many have done it. I hope he had fun before he was sick and feels better today.

why are yoh asking, you know he rarely does it. I really much doubt you faux innocently thought he had a bug, and you know it’s excessive for him, otherwise he wouldn’t have vomited. He might have got away with it if he’d eaten.

Yes, it's objectively excessive without talking about personal limits. Besides, who can afford 7 pints out these days!?

mogsrus · 16/12/2023 08:55

There is no standard amount to drink , but I do know a person that goes to his local 7days a week & orders 2pints at a time usually 7or 8 empty glasses are on the table before he leaves

@Peacheroo DS knows his limits because he has drunk too much before. As did I, it's what you do in your teens or early twenties, I don't believe anyone hasn't figured it out by 25.

Mkst people know their limits, but there are times when something simply doesn't sit right. So yes, he will most likely end up throwing up after drinking even as an adultcouple of times🤷
The reasons I threw up as an adult in my 30s after drinks:
Reaction to certain red wines. 1 glass causes 1 hour on toilet with bucket in hand. Didn't realise what it was until third time (don't have any actual food allergies so didn't clock it)...
Yuck chemical shite beer I tried.
A single shot which friend bought and it did not sit right (not touching it again).
Not properly cleaned beer pipes.
Homemeade chippy chili on kebab was more spicy than expected.
Got bit carried away so had tad too much but would be ok if taxi drove gas-break style so moving me back and forth in seat... Yeah.

Things happen.

If it’s a 21st birthday or a stag do it’s reasonable. In any other circumstances yes grossly excessive. And he’s an idiot for doing it on an empty stomach. If he had eaten he might’ve got away with it.

Does he do that a lot?

Ragwort · 16/12/2023 09:07

It's a huge amount if you are not used to it, haven't eaten and have a 'slight' body frame.

My DH probably had that much last night as he went out for a meal with friends, but he had a large snack before they met, drank over the course of the evening, with a meal .. and he is a big chap and used to drinking. He hasn't been sick (as far as I know - I heard him come in but we have separate bedrooms Grin).

Maybe but there’s also a lot of people who normalise highly dysfunctional drinking so it probably evens out.

Seven pints is well over a third of the recommended weekly intake for a man. For a blow out it doesn’t equate to him having a drink problem but if he’s doing that every time he drinks he is not doing himself any favours.

ICANTSPEYK · 16/12/2023 09:10

My DP will have 6-8 pints on a normal night out and is fine but he is 20st and his friends drink more like 4-5 so 7 pints on an empty stomach is definitely puking territory for some!

Silverbirchtwo · 16/12/2023 09:16

Also depends on the strength of the beer, the alcohol content varies a lot! Some beers contain almost as much alcohol as wine. If you know what beer he was drinking you could look it up and see how strong it was.

No its not its a stupid amount to drink whatever the occasion. Its not normal.

RudsyFarmer · 16/12/2023 09:28

Bloody hell. Why did he drink seven pints on an empty stomach? Consuming that amount of liquid is bizarre to me.

That's exactly my point. It's the kind of stupid behaviour you can get away with once in a blue moon. You can't be doing it every weekend.

TommyNever · 16/12/2023 09:38

I could manage seven pints over the course of a long night, with meals/snacks.

I wouldn't want to though because I tend to get tired of the taste and bloat of beer after 2 or 3 pints, and switch to a different drink.

Sharedcupboard · 16/12/2023 09:39

Mumsnet is always the wrong place to ask if anyone has drank more than 2 pints or 2 gin and
tonics.

In their entire life 😂😇

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 16/12/2023 09:41

Is 7 pints of lemonade excessive? Or milk? Or Ribena? If so then of course 7 pints of beer is too.

liveforsummer · 16/12/2023 09:45

On an empty stomach, especially if not a regular heavyish drinker then that would certainly make some people sick so I don't think you need to worry it's contagious thankfully 😅

WenttheDayWell · 16/12/2023 09:46

DH would maybe drink 3 pints on a night out, never been a big drinker and I can’t drink as it just makes me ill, even a tiddly bit. I think that’s a lot.

I have heard that the more you drink the more you can tolerate, but if you need 8 pints to get drunk if you drink regularly as a poster upthread said her DH can easily drink the expense must be huge.

liveforsummer · 16/12/2023 09:47

Chilicabbage · 16/12/2023 06:06

On empty stomach anything is excessive. If one wants to drink, one has to eat. Basic rule I learned as a teenager (who managed more than 7 pints and still can, notgrew up in UK). Stella makes me throw up after 2, so does carling and carlsberg no matter what I eat. 😶Shite beers.

Eating is cheating we used to say as teens. 😆Obviously known better now lol
