Laundry is not hard

Viohh · 15/12/2023 11:49

Why do people make such a meal out of laundry? The machine literally does it for you. All you need to do is put the clothes in the machine - a 15 second job? I do 2/3 loads a day no problem with a large dog and twins.

We have separate machines but even when we don’t use the dryer it’s not difficult. Just maintain momentum. And folding is what a 2 min job? I put everyone’s clothes on the stairs for them to take up.

I hate it, it’s my least favourite house chore. I also don’t have a drier so permanently got the airer up and waiting days for things to be dry enough to make more space on the airer.

NoCloudsAllowed · 15/12/2023 12:01

'Few tasks are more similar to the torment of Sisyphus than those of the housewife; day after day, one must wash dishes, dust furniture, mend clothes that will be dirty, dusty, and torn again. The housewife wears herself out running on the spot'

None of it's hard. But it's endless and dull and only visible if it's not done.

Dishes are far worst

I find that much less faff tbh.
We're all different.

VintageDiamonds · 15/12/2023 12:03

Good for you. I am constantly overwhelmed by piles of clean clothes and full laundry baskets. Never gave this a thought when I worked 3 days, exH was here to help out and children were younger (and clothes therefore smaller).

StephanieSuperpowers · 15/12/2023 12:04

Viohh · 15/12/2023 11:58

I usually fold when I’m waiting for other thing ie pasta to boil

Inspirational.

TeacherPlease · 15/12/2023 12:04

The folding does not take 2 mins. I usually put away 2-3 loads at a time and can normally get through a full 45 minute episode of something while doing it. And that’s without any ironing.

And it’s planning a time in the day where you’re home for a full 4 hours and have ten free mins when the washer finishes to move it over to the tumble dryer before it gets all sweaty and doggy.

It’s not torture, but equally it’s not fun. Hence why people complain.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/12/2023 12:04

And folding is what a 2 min job? I put everyone’s clothes on the stairs for them to take up.

I mean, this is just a lie. Folding does not take 2 minutes.

i’m sure your 6 month old was taking their own laundry upstairs, advanced as all MN babies are

SleepingStandingUp · 15/12/2023 12:04

I guess I just don't make enough pasta 🙄.

It isn't HARD I'm the way mining for coal is. But I put a load in and then forget when it's finished so then I have to remember to swap it to the tumble drier which is in the garage so depends what mood the twins are in and how long I want to leave them if it's unloading washer, unloading drier, loading washer, empty water / lint, come back in. Then folding up whilst the twins try to sit on me and the singleton is yacking at me and I can't do it whilst I do tea because it has to happen in different rooms and if Ieave piles of washing in the living there's a risk someone will make a nest. Then it all ends up going up at bed time because there's always another load behind it so now it's too late to put away and then the next day I'm having to rummage through bags to find stuff.

So it isn't HARD WORK but some of US are.

madeinmanc · 15/12/2023 12:05

In fine, sunny weather I actually enjoy seeing a line of washing blowing in a light breeze, so you're not wrong in a way. But we've had about five of those days this year. Otherwise it's a nightmare in my tiny house, two airers taking up precious space, that are not effective anyway. They're never put away because it's a continuous task and it's rained every day for the past month, if not longer. Washing hanging around for days and never fully drying. Actually I thing it's drying, not washing, that's the real problem 😭

SoupDragon · 15/12/2023 11:53

here's your gold medal

😂😂😂

SpudleyLass · 15/12/2023 12:06

It's not hard, just never ending. I never used to have a problem with it until I had a disabled kid and am now constantly doing laundry.

Cheeesus · 15/12/2023 12:06

I think using a tumble dryer or not makes a bit of a difference too. We don’t use one and there’s time taken to hang things up, plus it’s more visible. And the room needed to hang it means you have to plan your washing a bit more. And then in summer, faffing about with washing line.

OP, how do you have time for 2-3 loads a day? Do you WFH?

llamadrama16 · 15/12/2023 12:07

It's not the actual washing, that's the easy bit. Sorting g the colours from the whites/lights, turning the clothes right way around so they actually wash properly, stain removing what needs doing. Then hanging it all (no tumble dryer here), putting on the dehumidifier, then sorting through whats dry (we have two airers) and rehanging what's still damp. Then folding and putting it all away. No to mention knowing if the child who prefers a particular item of clothing has an event which they need that item for and if it's clean or not. Then also filtering out the outgrown items once a month or so and deciding if it's good enough to hand down/charity shop/pass on to a friend, or can it be mended or does it need to go to fabric recycling and where is the bag of fabric recycling stuff?

YABU.

ActDottie · 15/12/2023 12:07

going for a run isn’t hard… I run often and also go to the gym which isn’t hard… oh and I don’t think cooking dinner is hard or washing up after. But laundry I do find hard. And it’s quite easy for it to become overwhelming.

different people find different things hard.

ActDottie · 15/12/2023 12:08

Viohh · 15/12/2023 12:00

I apologise for tone. Reading back I do sound smug and up myself. I just know so many people consider it the worst job but it’s nowhere near as bad as scrubbing the oven for example.

I’d rather scrub the oven…

dementedpixie · 15/12/2023 12:09

I just never get up to date with laundry. No tumble dryer means I have to rotate my stock of washing so that it's all in varying states of dryness. I have to hang things on hangers and over the banister to spread it out a bit. We create a lot of washing too as 3 of us go to the gym, ds plays rugby and dh plays football.

RuthW · 15/12/2023 12:09

Ten mins to sort and take downstairs

Two mins to put on

10-15 mins to hang up on airer

10 mins to move around airer and rotate so it all dried

5 mins to remove off airer and take upstairs (must be done before new load hung up)

10-15 mins to put away.

I work full time and it's hard to find all this time.

I don't like doing those either, although I bought a dishwasher last week so that's made it easier

NotMyDayJob · 15/12/2023 12:12

This is where I am going wrong! My 20 month old doesn't fold the laundry in two minutes!

At last! The answer to the meaning of life!

🙄

At least you've got the self awareness to realise you sound smug. You smug, smuggy, smuggykins.

ItsThatTimeOfYear · 15/12/2023 12:13

15 seconds to load and 2 minutes to fold?
Are you washing 3 items at a time?

Nanny0gg · 15/12/2023 12:13

DonnaBanana · 15/12/2023 11:55

The laundry is easy. You can even throw most of it in the same short cycle and put it on 20C with no colour runs nowadays as long as it's not really dirty. The most painful part is turning everything inside out back to how it should be. If you could train the kids to not put everything in the wash inside out, it would be so much easier.

Better if it is inside out. Otherwise pilling

Nevermind31 · 15/12/2023 12:15

Well done you!
of is an issue if you do not have a dryer, or outside drying space, only limited space to dry indoors…
the actual washing has never been the problem- duh

DonnaBanana · 15/12/2023 12:18

Nanny0gg · 15/12/2023 12:13

True but then old muggins here has to turn piles of laundry inside out again which takes forever 😫 Maybe I should think outside the box and just put it away however it is and then people turn their own clothes the right way round when putting them on...
