Laundry is not hard

Why do people make such a meal out of laundry? The machine literally does it for you. All you need to do is put the clothes in the machine - a 15 second job? I do 2/3 loads a day no problem with a large dog and twins.

We have separate machines but even when we don’t use the dryer it’s not difficult. Just maintain momentum. And folding is what a 2 min job? I put everyone’s clothes on the stairs for them to take up.

We all have different struggles and different strengths.

Personally I'd do laundry, tidying (like clearing surfaces, putting items back where they live) and vacuuming aaaall day long, while washing dishes constitutes my own personal idea of hell. I would quite literally swap chores with someone who lived near me if I could, so that I did their vacuuming and they did my dishes 😂In the process of getting a dishwasher installed now so thankfully I won't have to suffer much longer...

ManateeFair · 15/12/2023 13:40

Well, great that you don't find it hard, but we're all different, aren't we? I find laundry really annoying and fiddly and time-consuming. It's not really just a matter of 'the machine does it all for you'; once it comes out of the washer I have to put the airer up, hang all the stuff on it, which is fiddly and annoying and makes me feel damp and cold, and then have it sitting there drying and getting in the way, then I have to take everything off again and fold it, which takes me ages because I'm just not very good at it and it never looks nice. And then there's putting it away, pairing up all the socks etc. I just find it all incredibly fucking tedious and irritating and depressing. For this reason, DP does all the laundry in our house.

By contrast, I love cooking and find it incredibly easy, fun and stress-free. But I don't go around telling people who hate it that I don't get why they have a problem with it.

I have pretty much zero interest in housework to be honest. I certainly don't feel proud of being able to do it.

mondaytosunday · 15/12/2023 13:42

You're right - not a problem at all! I've never complained about it. I do hate changing sheets though -hate doing the duvet!

GotMooMilk · 15/12/2023 13:53

We have seperate washer and tumbler and are lucky enough to have a utility room with ceiling mounted hanger thing.
I STILL HATE LAUNDRY. It's never ending. Putting in them machines- fine. Folding from drier or off rack/washing line- ok but bit tedious. Putting the clothes in everyones drawers/wardrobes- THE WORST. I end up with piles and piles of clean washing until I can be bothered to put it all away so it's partly my own fault but still.

StoodySmithereens · 15/12/2023 13:56

Piece of piss with my old Samsung. But then I had a Bosch washer dryer, & it’s an absolute bitch! There’s just far too many options. Who uses all these cycles? I’ve only ever used 3 at most, but mainly now I’m down to just 1. The shortest drying time is 20 mins, so if it only needs an extra 5 or 10 mins everything’s well shriveled up by the time it finishes. You can’t just stop it either, & it doesn’t switch off on its own if you’re out. The beep to let you know that it’s finished is PATHETIC! My old Sammy would play a very long, loud, tune. I feel like kicking it to death. So what used to be an absolute pleasure has turned into my worst mare.

BiddyPop · 15/12/2023 14:07

I normally do a minimal amount as the laundry fairy at home is so effective. Hang an occasional load on the line in good weather, very occasionally do the week's folding on a Saturday in front of a movie, but I do refold all my things as I like them a certain way to fit well in drawers. And do any handwashing needed (mostly my jumpers) as DH deems it beyond laundry fairy job description 🤣

I am currently in temp accomodation, so the washers and dryers are in the basement. 3 washers between 90 apartments, and while there are 3 dryers - 1 is broken and a 2nd only has cold air. I'm here 5.5 weeks and have not yet got the working dryer - so all clothes have been washed ok most weeks (a couple of times have needed go away and come back later to get a machine), but then all dried hanging on backs of chairs or on the pull out line over the bath since I arrived.

So I am looking forward to getting a permanent flat with its own machines! Hopefully by early Jan...

thesugarbumfairy · 15/12/2023 14:16

No its not hard. But it is unending. Putting it in the machine is easy. Taking the dry stuff off the airer, sorting it, moving it to the 'stairdrobe' takes time. Taking wet stuff out of the machine, hanging that up takes time. The whole rigmarole is boring and relentless. But not hard, no.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 15/12/2023 14:21

The washing bit is easy - the machine does that. It's the getting it dry that's a pita, and involves regularly moving clothing at different stages of drying around to get the next load hung up. I hate it, always having to think of it, and time when I can wash the next load, and sometimes I get it wrong.

Don't remember my DP's having this issue, but they probably always had the heating on 21 rather than 17.5.

jammysocks · 15/12/2023 14:23

Its easy. Unless you are a large family with limited space to hang things to dry. We have a tumble dryer but that's expensive when using it a lot. So either you accept the cost or you have to delay washing days so you can get the first 2 loads dry. It's not that simple

Goatymum · 15/12/2023 14:26

It’s neverending in a family & not an ‘exciting’ job - at least you can eat what you cook or see a tidy house.
And teens just chuck their clean washing back in the floor or step over it on the stairs.

luckylavender · 15/12/2023 14:27

It's easy if you're at home all day sure. Even though you're busy with other things you can squeeze loading and folding in. Be out of the house for 11 hours a day & it's not that easy.

mummabubs · 15/12/2023 14:27

SoupDragon · 15/12/2023 11:53

here's your gold medal

Oh my God, yes this!! I'm so glad it's not hard for you OP.

I work in a demanding job and have young two children who constantly get food or mud all over them. Add in school system of uniform/ PE kits / Forest school requirements and frankly the laundry isn't just a quick or easy task. It's having to constantly think at least a day ahead as to what everyone needs and whether I'll have time to do it the next day if not, on top of work and everything else life lobs at you.

Fine for you to find it manageable but frankly it's goady AF to judge others for not being as domestically fantastic as you.

Blinkin · 15/12/2023 14:36

Well it's obviously not hard in the way physics or languages can be, but it is a 10 minute job minimum and the problem is I've got many 10 minutes jobs and precious few hours to do them in! I've got 2.5 hours with my kids after work to feed them, bathe them, do homework with them and, you know, spend time with them then usually an hour of work to do. I spend the last hour of the evening with my husband, which I think is also important. Therefore all these 10 minutes jobs need to be slotted into this time either with my children or husband. They get done, but it is a faff and frankly I'd rather spend time with my family. Do you work many hours OP? Laundry was a doddle on maternity leave because I had endless time.

OpenLanes · 15/12/2023 14:37

Viohh · 15/12/2023 12:02

Dishes are far worst

For me dishes are easy.
Load the dishwasher, leave, put away when cooking.

Laundry means separating clothes (different detergent for 2 children with eczema) drying, making sure nothing is left too long in the dryer and shrinks, then folding it all and putting away in multiple different rooms, as well as taking all bedding off, putting it back on, folding all the small things like tea towels, cleaning cloths and wash cloths. Definitely one of the more time consuming chores compared to dishes or tidying away toys.

DerekFaker · 15/12/2023 14:39

Is this something people complain about? Can't say I've noticed.

Marblessolveeverything · 15/12/2023 14:42

YABU, you are underestimating the task. Sorting it out, reading labels putting on multiple loads,

Unload and hang up, rotate, fold, and put away or iron then put away in multiple locations. It's a task I happily now send out best decision this year

rorret · 15/12/2023 14:50

I'm ND - I have ASD and ADHD.

I try not to use the dryer, because I have a washer dryer that doesn't dry a whole load.

I currently have a dry load of washing on the airer but I can't put it away today because I'm going out tonight so I can't cope with anything else but getting myself ready to go out tonight.

I have washing in the ironing basket that's been there for months waiting to be ironed.

I hate the smug attitude that people have saying such and such is so easy - no, it's not, not for me.

Lilithlogic · 15/12/2023 14:53

What a strange thing to claim points for.

Gunpla · 15/12/2023 14:53

DonnaBanana · 15/12/2023 11:55

The laundry is easy. You can even throw most of it in the same short cycle and put it on 20C with no colour runs nowadays as long as it's not really dirty. The most painful part is turning everything inside out back to how it should be. If you could train the kids to not put everything in the wash inside out, it would be so much easier.

I have never turned anything inside out?

Lilithlogic · 15/12/2023 14:54

Somebody will be comparing doorsteps again soon.

SallyWD · 15/12/2023 14:55

I enjoy laundry and agree it's not hard. It is time consuming though. I spent a lot of time sorting the laundry out - some things are washed on different temperatures, some things go in the dryer, some things dry in the house (or outside when warm enough), some things get ironed, some things don't. So yes there's a lot of that going on. If I have a really busy week at work and busy time driving the kids around etc, the massive overflowing laundry basket can feel overwhelming.

coolkatt · 15/12/2023 14:55

AllIsWellish · 15/12/2023 11:55

God I hate ur, it's the hanging everything up and putting it away that's the worse. And there's always something needing to be washed

exactly, it's the folding, putting into piles, finding the odd socks, putting away into drawers that is monotonous and brainkillingly boring. then don't even mention the stuff that goes into the ironing piles. all to be ironed then put into afford mentioned piles and drawers and hangers. fking yawning just thinking about it

rorret · 15/12/2023 14:55

If something isn't really dirty why are you washing it?

a short 20 degree wash wouldn't leave my pants and socks clean.

Then I have wool wash, things to hand wash, acrylics, cottons, towels and sheets.

I've never turned anything inside out either.

Gunpla · 15/12/2023 14:57

gamerchick · 15/12/2023 12:47

It's not the washing, it's the drying in winter. Not everyone, has or can afford to run a ruddy drier and definitely the turning inside out for washing. Fastening zips and buttons. Faffy washing for deep colours, minimum spin for a different set of faffy washing etc

If you don't really care about the condition your clothes get in and just sling it all in with no thought then it's definitely easier.

OK, think I'm the latter category Blush

Wakeywake · 15/12/2023 14:57

I can't think of any household chore that is hard. Just fucking boring and tedious and neverending
