Can bouncers take a passport off you?

I'm going out with my younger sister who's only 17. She uses my old driving license it's in my old name. And has a different photo

If they notice can they take my passport off me?

No I'd ring the police if they did

Screwyouloopylou · 15/12/2023 07:39

No

NancyJoan · 15/12/2023 07:43

No. They may take the ID of the person who is trying get in underage, but even then they will keep it for the actual owner to collect.

InTheRainOnATrain · 15/12/2023 07:46

If they realised I think that they would take the driving licence from her, return it to you and then kick you both out. But my experience of the subject is about 15 years old! Can’t imagine any scenario where they could legally take your passport from you though.

margotrose · 15/12/2023 07:47

If your ID is legitimate and you're genuinely over age then no, I wouldn't think so.

You may both get chucked out and barred though.

seesw · 15/12/2023 07:50

@margotrose from googling they say no but it all seems wishy washy and they can phone the police but I'd imagine they'd not bother them and would just give me a warning etc

They can phone the police but that doesn't
mean they can take your passport off you.

I suspect if you're caught you'll both get barred though.

LakeTiticaca · 15/12/2023 08:10

No they can't. They can bar entry to the venue though

LunaandLily · 15/12/2023 08:11

When I was at uni (2012ish I think this happened) a classmate gave an underage friend her driving license to use as ID. The bouncer did retain the driving license and passed it to the police who made her wait a good couple of weeks before they would give it back.

Benibidibici · 15/12/2023 08:11

No but they will kick you both out.

It is really annoying when people do this. An over 18s bar is that age limit for a reason, the adults there don't really want it full of younger teenagers. Your sister can go when she's old enough.

Did you really never do it when you were young?

Summerbay23 · 15/12/2023 08:19

Here they do retain the fake ID (usually driving license) and bar people. I don’t think they’d be able to take a passport that is valid though.

CaroleSinger · 15/12/2023 08:19

What does it have to do with your passport anyway?

TeaKitten · 15/12/2023 08:20

It’d unlikely but not impossible. I used to work in a nightclub and they did take them off people who argued about it there, usually just made you collect it when sober the next day and banned you. You are daft if you think they are stupid enough not to notice the same name on both IDs though if you go in together, they see these attempts multiple times a night. So if you are going to do it maybe don’t go in together!

BooBooBaloo · 15/12/2023 08:32

Why would they even have access to your passport?

Sugarsun · 15/12/2023 08:41

If they think the driving license is fake they may try and take that one but more likely they will just not let her in.

I think your looks would have had to have changed dramatically for them to not notice, especially if they’re both the same first names and same date of birth on both.

I assume OP will be using her passport as ID and the younger sister will be using her old driving license.

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/12/2023 08:43

Do you mean you're using your passport and she's using your driving licence, so both in the same name? I know bouncers have a reputation but they're not completely brain dead....

MrsJackRackam · 15/12/2023 08:48

If the police/ licensing authority do a spot check (which they frequently do this time of year) and your sister gets caught drinking underage then it's the barstaff who served her will be fined £5000. That'll be a nice Christmas present for them.

They’ll also have the exact same date of birth and a similar looking photo 👀

Not the same surname as OP says it's in my old name
Not clear about first name, and dob will be the same of course.

LaMarschallin · 15/12/2023 08:58

10 to 15 years ago this did happen to my nieces. The older one looked older and could get in without producing identity. The younger one used to borrow her sister's passport as they did look very similar.
When it was eventually spotted, the passport was confiscated and handed in to the police. My SiL had to go to the station to retrieve it.
Things may be different now, but that definitely happened back then. I actually went to the police station with SiL as moral support so know it wasn't just an urban myth or something.

CalistoNoSolo · 15/12/2023 09:01

Using your passport as ID to get into a nightclub is bonkers. Surely you have an alternative form of ID? And why does your sister need your old DL? Why hasn't she got her own (fake) ID?

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/12/2023 09:03

@TeenDivided Aah I didn't spot the old name bit, but of course same DOB which is the exact thing they are checking.

They will most likely both have the same first name, same DOB and a similar photo.

I guess the only way they could get around it would be to go at completely different times and not go in together.

There’s no way they’d get away with it going in together.
