Do you wash coats and how often? Including winter parkas and jackets etc?

I need to 😆

Ktime · 14/12/2023 09:41

Yes, I ignore the dry cleaning instructions and wash on the handwashing setting with no spin.

greenacrylicpaint · 14/12/2023 09:41

once a year. before I pack it away for summer.

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2023 09:42

YABU. Why start 2 threads in AIBU? when you could have asked in Housekeeping?

Queucumber · 14/12/2023 09:42

Yes.

Tistheseason23 · 14/12/2023 09:43

Only occasionally. I went to wash my waterproof coat the other day and it says do not wash on it or it’s not waterproof any more. I wash teen dc’s big puffa jackets at the end of each term as they get visibly dirty.

Fridayfederica · 14/12/2023 09:48

Given the powerful aroma that some people’s coats give off (delightful in a stuffy tube carriage) I wish more people gave this some thought! I wash mine a couple of times a year if I can do them at home, dry clean once if not.

Aprilx · 14/12/2023 10:12

I don’t think I have ever washed a coat, but I take them for dry cleaning.

user1471523870 · 14/12/2023 10:36

I do! I wash them roughly once a month as they start to smell around the neck line. My son's school one gets washed weekly as it gets dirtier with mud/pens etc
Short gentle cycle, liquid laundry detergent and then I use the tumble drier if it's puffer jackets or I just put them on hangers if they are tailored.

Oh no sorry I’ve created 2 the same by accident! Not sure how that happened.
Was AIBU for traffic but obviously didn’t mean to create 2.

Yes, monthly over winter and then before putting them away.

SurelySmartie · 14/12/2023 10:45

Goatymum · 14/12/2023 09:40

Yes I think I need to as well but never really have. I’ve washed a fleece jacket before but not my winter coat. I’ve realised today I think mine may be a little on the stale side..
Ugh no I hope I haven’t turned into one of these smelly coat people!

Of course.

zoomiboomie · 14/12/2023 10:55

Depends on the coat. £3k cashmere Maxmara ain't going to be going in the washing machine. Dds north face yep. As needed.

Sera1989 · 14/12/2023 10:55

No, I assume they get washed when I go out in the rain 🙈. But one of mine is very light coloured and I wash that if it looks dirty even though it's not supposed to go in the machine. The dark ones I never thought to bother with 🙈

Ploctopus · 14/12/2023 10:55

I do wash my fleecy raincoat because it gets splashed with mud etc fairly often. Don’t wash my Barbour for obvious reasons but do scrub the dry mud off now and then 🤣

I pretty much never wash my wool work coat. It’s dry clean only which I can’t be bothered with and it never really gets dirty since I only wear it in town and even then quite rarely.

dontgobaconmyheart · 14/12/2023 10:57

Generally not. I stick the lightweight waterproof I use when I walk the dog in the washing machine pretty frequently but the rest of my coats are generally wool blend so they just get spot cleaned. I'd steam them if they really needed it or take to the dry cleaners but they typically don't need washing.

spiderlight · 14/12/2023 10:57

Yes. I have a spaniel!

SurelySmartie · 14/12/2023 11:06

This morning I just happened to take my winter padded coat into the bathroom.
I normally keep my coats in the hall or elsewhere where any smell must be masked by cooking and general (normal) house smells.
But the bathroom was airy and pleasant smelling and for the first time I noticed my coat actually smells slightly unpleasant. A bit like smelly coats on public transport smell😱

I use public transport every day so now I think I am one of those smelly people on public transport. I feel mortified.

It’s a padded polyester quilted parka type thing I’ve had for nearly 10 years! But I like it. I hope it’s going to be ok in the washing machine.

If it's visibly dirty

OnAPostItNote · 14/12/2023 11:08

I would love one of these.

Queucumber · 14/12/2023 11:20

Everything needs washing (or dry cleaning) from time to time. I pick a couple of days in the Summer, when there’s a heat wave and all the other laundry is done, to wash all the coats in the house. Stick them on hangers on the washing line and they’re dry in a few hours. Then it’s wash as needed.

If you’re using public transport every day - assuming you ever get a seat - the coat will pick up odours from the seats.

idontlikealdi · 14/12/2023 11:21

I wash my puffa type coats when they get dirty - dogs / horses and mud mean that it's quite often.

My proper wool coat gets dry cleaned if it looks like it needs it.

pontipinemum · 14/12/2023 11:35

@Sera1989 I like your thinking 😂

AH, depends on the coat. I have a few nicer evening sort of coats made of wool/ similar I don't wash those just brush them down. But I hardly ever wear those.

I have a long gilet I wear a lot, and a few good rain coats. They go into the machine when needed I put them onto a quick wash and do not tumble dry

SurelySmartie · 14/12/2023 12:52

Hopefully they stay waterproof? I’ve got a north face one I need to wash as well.
