Do you wash your coats?

Do you wash coats and how often? Including winter parkas and jackets etc?

OP posts:
IvorTheEngineDriver · 14/12/2023 12:55

No. If they need a clean they go to the dry cleaners.

glossypeach · 14/12/2023 13:04

i wash my child’s as it’s a waterproof one from Tesco and it often gets muddy and comes out fine when washed. Plus it’s cheap enough that if it ruins, it’s not much of a loss. Mine, I don’t. My winter coat is reasonably expensive and the material would bobble. I think when it gets to the point of needing a wash; I’ll take it to the dry cleaners.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 14/12/2023 13:18

All except for 1 suede and 3 wool. But all my parkas and jackets can go in the washer and dryer, even my down. I only do it once a year, before I put them away for the warmer weather.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 14/12/2023 13:25

My son hangs a coat inside the garage, he puts it on to go outside to smoke. It reeks. 😑I think smokers can be a bit nose blind.

Stumpedasatree · 14/12/2023 13:28

Wash all coats including down filled ones approx once a month, no issues

MintJulia · 14/12/2023 13:32

Wool or cashmere coats and my gaberdine trench get dry cleaned once a year.

Ski/shooting/country jackets get sponged down regularly and dry cleaned once a year.

Ds's polyester puffa jacket gets hand washed with liquid soap about every three weeks because it smells.

girlfriend44 · 14/12/2023 14:12

yes i do.

KimberleyClark · 14/12/2023 14:15

I ruined a raincoat by washing it. Sometimes they are dry clean only for a reason.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/12/2023 14:18

I wash them when putting away for winter then when needed during winter. So maybe three/four times a year. My anorak type jacket was clean on last month and needed washed on Sunday as we’d been to get a Christmas tree. Sometimes I just sponge wipe it. A lady I work with hangs her near mine, the cuffs are caked with black filth, she must never wash it.

Hols24 · 14/12/2023 14:24

I wouldn't wash a decent waterproof coat. Mine is about 5 years old and worn most days in the winter. It still looks and smells clean - but then I don't have dogs!

MasterBeth · 14/12/2023 14:44

I wash my coat after every wear, but only after I have Hoovered it.

BettyOBarley · 14/12/2023 14:48

Yes when they look like they need it, but how my waterproof coat is no longer waterproof!! 🙈

FancyBottom · 14/12/2023 14:52

Of course, at least once a year. I have machine washed and dry laundered but now I avoid dry laundry only clothes.
You buy a special wash for waterproof items to wash it but preserve the coating. You would do the same with cleaning your shoes, polish and suede sprays reinforce or add water repellent properties.

Look at nikwax tech wash for waterproofs

This morning I just happened to take my winter padded coat into the bathroom.
I normally keep my coats in the hall or elsewhere where any smell must be masked by cooking and general (normal) house smells.
But the bathroom was airy and pleasant smelling and for the first time I noticed my coat actually smells slightly unpleasant. A bit like smelly coats on public transport smell😱

I use public transport every day so now I think I am one of those smelly people on public transport. I feel mortified.

It’s a padded polyester quilted parka type thing I’ve had for nearly 10 years! But I like it. I hope it’s going to be ok in the washing machine.

Wait, you haven’t washed this thing in TEN YEARS??

OP!!! No wonder it smells stale!! Honestly at this point I’d almost say don’t wash it as you might have a colony of sentient lifeforms living in the polyfill. 😂

Chuck it in the machine and see how it goes. Worst case it falls apart and you have a reason to treat yourself to a new coat.

TheGoogleMum · 14/12/2023 15:10

No but I probably should! Don't have dogs and am a non smoker. I also wear my big coat very rarely because I get too hot in it. DDs coat currently has paint on so I should probably try and wash it, could do with it staying waterproof though

fussychica · 14/12/2023 15:21

I only have the type of coats you can wash these day. When I worked I had lovely wool coats etc which were dry cleaned.
I make sure all the coats get washed before they are packed away for summer and as and when they need it during the winter, assuming there's a decent drying day. I rarely use public transport but if I did it would be more often.

Thatswhy11 · 14/12/2023 15:39

Yes! Always it's coats that hold smells quite often. A grubby coat isn't a good look

RobertaFirmino · 14/12/2023 15:47

I send them to the cleaners once a year and hang them outside every so often, just to get a good blast of fresh air through them.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/12/2023 15:47

Yes regularly. I have one which seems to absorb every cooking smell and is also yellow so needs washing a lot lol

Roselilly36 · 14/12/2023 15:59

Coats get really dirty, I only wash them we they need it though, otherwise the padding tends to go thin.

mathanxiety · 14/12/2023 16:07

Yes, several times over winter, and again when I pack it away at the arrival of warm weather.

I have a down filled coat, and a tumble dryer gets it dry and the down properly distributed with three tennis balls thrown in with it.

I wash my waterproof coats with this a couple of times a year.

mathanxiety · 14/12/2023 16:10

@SurelySmartie
The washing machine will be fine, but you'll need a dryer and three tennis balls bouncing around with it to pound the filling into place as it dries.

margotrose · 14/12/2023 16:11

Yes, but I work with animals (and own a dog) so nothing stays clean for long. They just go in the machine on 30 and then a low heat tumble dry. Never ruined anything doing that.

The waterproof stuff gets washed with Nikwax/Techwash a few times a year as well to keep it in good condition.
