Coloured Christmas tree lights

Are they back in/never went out?

Ive noticed three different Christmas trees in well to do 🤷🏻‍♀️😂homes recently and they look really nice.
I grew up with them as an 80’s kid, but only ever have used the plain yellow/white lights

I love incandescent bulbs too but live in fear they will stop working and can't replace. Would any of you possibly link to your softer LED versions? I always search every year but can't find the gentler blues.

craniol · 14/12/2023 13:40

The 80s was when the tasteful tree really got going so although many people remember tackier versions they were not actually fashionable at that point.

It was the height of sophistication to have a real tree decorated with red ribbon bows. I don’t recall many people having a real tree before the 80s.

They are definitely coming back into fashion - I think it's partly nostalgia-driven, as I've noticed quite a few retro 70s/80s style bauble sets for sale in the shops this year too.

My personal preference has always been for 'warm white' lights, even when I was a little child - I really don't know why, as it's certainly nothing to do with good taste on my part! I just get more of a magical kind of vibe from them somehow. Still love to see a set of coloured lights on someone else's tree, though.

To be honest, I've very rarely seen a decorated Christmas tree in someone else's house that I didn't like! There's just something lovely about them, even if they're nothing like the tree I'd choose for my own house. When I see a tree and think 'Yeah, that's awful' it's usually a professionally decorated one in a retail display or a hotel or something.

I think 2 things are happening:

  1. The colours on the LEDs are getting better. They used to be very neon, but are starting to look warmer and warmer
  2. Today's younger adults grew up with the LED coloured lights, so they are more in keeping with what they expect - vs someone like me who grew up with those lantern type, filament coloured lights, meaning the LEDs look too bright to remind me of my childhood

I don't do "monochrome" Christmas. Lots of colour here and definitely no theme to the decorations other than "Christmas" and "my-children-made-this". No flashing lights either, as it gives me a headache.

BingoMarieHeeler · 14/12/2023 14:05

Were always in for me - just white is so sad and plain.

Strugglingtodomybest · 14/12/2023 14:28

I've always had coloured lights, tinsel and mis-matching baubles. I think they look more Christmassy than colour coordinated trees, which, as someone else said, just remind me of hotels and pubs.

I like the white lights outside though, the ones that look like icicles hanging off the roof.

The only hard fast rule I have is - absolutely no flashing lights!

Spookymormonhelldream · 14/12/2023 14:47

Love me some coloured lights! So much more festive. The only rules are NO flickering lights, and no horrible blue lights, that look like a police car as PP said. Kids love tinsel so we have that too!

gdaysport · 14/12/2023 15:09

I love coloured lights, but the old fashioned ones with a white light and then a coloured bulb. The new ones have coloured bulbs which is why they are bright and too harsh. You can spot them a mile off because the look like they should be strung around a tiki bar.
The old ones tend to be non LED but look much better - like soft jewels.

OhMehGoddess · 14/12/2023 15:11

Only use coloured ones on the tree. Love it and won't change it.

So many snobby comments over the years about those of us who favour what some call the elf vomit look. And now it's back in fashion what fun!

AlwaysForksAndMarbles · 14/12/2023 15:40

The whole point of my tree is that it has a bit of everything from all our past Christmases, and I have always had coloured lights. I have decorations from every decade from the 1950s onwards, and we add a new decoration every year, so it is our history. Some of the decorations were on my grandparents’, great aunt’s and parents’ trees, so they are full of memories of wondrous childhood Christmases. I try to recreate that feeling every year. The thought of choosing all new decorations to follow a theme or colour scheme is totally anathema to what the tree represents for me. It should be a mish-mash of colour, style and materials, adding up to a glittery, magical, memory-filled, beautiful thing.

mogtheexcellent · 14/12/2023 15:46

I have both - 160 globe coloured static and 240 warm white LED static on my 6 ft tree. I find coloured on own is not bright enough.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/12/2023 15:53

I love my coloured lights.

Warm white for indoor trees, (and any other indoor lights) coloured lights on outdoor trees.

I've never heard it called elf vomit before, but I love it and am stealing it to use forever more!

I've gone for colourer lights this year by request of my 9 year old. I love them and they remind me of my childhood Christmases in the 80's.

Same. First time I’ve used coloured lights in 20 years… and oh, how I’ve missed them. Feels very 80s childhood.

Jojoanna · 14/12/2023 16:17

I adore coloured lights always have them !

Coastalcreeksider · 14/12/2023 16:19

I took my white lights down yesterday and redecorated the tree with the coloured lights I forgot I had.

Looks so much nicer, I love them.

LinguisticallyCunning · 14/12/2023 16:21

Christmas is about bright and colourful decs rather than dull, tasteful shit. The more gawdy the better. Always has been.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 14/12/2023 16:29

So are we queens of tack the influencers now? 😂

IndecentFeminist · 14/12/2023 16:31

I do like warm white and lots of, but the last few years we have had the coloured nostalgic ones from Aldi and they're lovely. The rest of the family prefer them too.

We'd probably qualify as a 'well to do' home.

Iloveabaileys · 14/12/2023 16:32

I've put coloured lights in my window this year as most years they've been white and I was envying the neighbours pretty coloured ones. For inside I have warm white as I think it might be too much for me . But I think everyone should have whatever they like or enjoy it's your Christmas after all 🧑‍🎄

KatBurglar · 14/12/2023 16:34

I went the other way this year.

After 8 years of living inside Santa’s grotto because I accidentally bought a string of 1,000 lights instead of the 600 I was supposed to get, I couldn’t quite face that much colour and bought 400 warm white lights instead.

I’m sure the coloured lights will come out next year, but it’s rather nice having a change.
