Are they back in/never went out?

Ive noticed three different Christmas trees in well to do 🤷🏻‍♀️😂homes recently and they look really nice.
I grew up with them as an 80’s kid, but only ever have used the plain yellow/white lights

Coloured lights wouldn’t match at all with my current tree decs, what type do they go with?

I don't know whether they're in or out, but they are much better than the white ones imo. Always have been, always will be.

I always think overly tasteful is a bit try-hard. It's all about the excess for me. The more colours, the better. But then I'm not a well-to-do householder.

I agree. I don’t like “tasteful” Christmas trees. Bring on the coloured lights I say.

EllaPaella · 13/12/2023 23:18

I've gone for colourer lights this year by request of my 9 year old. I love them and they remind me of my childhood Christmases in the 80's.

I've bought some rainbow coloured baubles from John Lewis in pinks, blues, purple etc. looks lovely with the coloured lights.

MagicMatilda · 13/12/2023 23:21

We switched to colourful lights a few years ago, I think they are so much more Christmassy and joyful! Tinsel will be making a come back soon haha

Aroundthewaygirl · 13/12/2023 23:22

I grew up with colored lights. They seem more festive and homey to me than plain white lights.

VanillaImpulse · 13/12/2023 23:24

I got some lovely Canterbury old fashioned lights from Aldi like these

80s Christmas all over. Lovely magical pink lights.
Much better than those led shit

White lights are lovely in the right setting, but for me it's colourful lights all the way on the tree. Not LEDs, the old fashioned glass bulbs.

Absolutely!! Even though they're a bloody nightmare! The modern ones don't go as nicely & some if the colours are suspect! But the proper old ones are magical!!

I don't mind the tradition white lights, but not a fan of LED.

im hoping my tradutional lights outlast me!! If not, I may have to go back to candles on the tee😂😂

craniol · 13/12/2023 23:27

If you go too tasteful you end up looking like a chain pub or hotel. It’s very safe and bland. Tacky, colourful decorations bizarrely look a lot more modern.

not4profit · 13/12/2023 23:29

I have always stuck with coloured lights so I'm pleased to see they may be coming back into fashion. After a disaster a couple of years ago when one of my two traditional sets failed and the replacements I ordered didn't work out of the box, I invested in a set of "Twinkly" LED lights which I keep on the rainbow setting. The colours are pretty, and I use them mixed with a more traditional set (Christmas workshop) and I'm very happy with the result.

Coloured lights, lametta, foil stars and glass baubles in this house

I detest modern sleek Christmas - looks ridiculous. 👍🏻

I like coloured ones best, and guess what I found this year as well? Lametta! (Sp?). I didn't know that existed any more. 😀

They go with anything. Any Christmas tree decorations go with everything. The only thing that looks shit is everything matching.

Beeinalily · 13/12/2023 23:33

Sorry @Windwaysway , cross posted - you found it too!

Grumpsy · 13/12/2023 23:33

What I do wish would disappear are those migraine inducing luminous LED blue (just blue not multicoloured) ones that look like a police car is in the house.

bellamountain · 13/12/2023 23:34

I saw a photo of Sophie Ellis Bextor's tree (maybe a few years ago or last year) and she had the coloured lights. Tree looked beautiful and I thought ok, they are making a come back and sure enough they have. I would buy some but I'm being tight.

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 13/12/2023 23:35

We have coloured lights because my kids love them.

gemloving · 13/12/2023 23:35

My son (4) is still asking every day. He's off school tomorrow so we're getting some. Christmas magic for him. We have lovely warm lights around the outside of our house xx

FlySwimmer · 13/12/2023 23:35

We have two trees this year - we had a small one from when we lived in a tiny flat, then bought a larger one when we moved into our house (both artificial). For some reason DH got both down from the attic this year so we decided to put them both up: the larger one in the front room & smaller one in our back, family room. Front room tree has white lights and red decorations: the matchiness isn’t intentional as such, it’s because we bought a cheap starter pack of baubles years ago which were all red probably because we left it late to buy anything

Back room, smaller tree is a riot of colour: coloured baubles, coloured lights, all the mad ornaments we’ve accumulated. Love them both! Always had coloured lights on my parents’ tree growing up.

KnottyKnitting · 13/12/2023 23:37

Yup- we have coloured Christmas lights on our tree. And a naff fairy I made from a 50p Barbie knock off 35 years ago, and tinsel ( including on the pictures and mirrors) and lots of mismatched baubles - oh and shiny red and gold ceiling chains AKA 1975.
It's not Christmas without a bit of tacky bling!

TheDogIsInCharge · 13/12/2023 23:38

My tree has coloured and warm white lights - the coloured ones are my favourite. I've had coloured lights for years and it is very probably because they remind my of childhood christmases at my gran and grandad's who had a white tree with coloured lights. There was a lot of love in that house and even though I have a real tree instead of a white one, the coloured lights just make me feel all warm and properly festive. My tree is a jumble of decorations from every year including baubles old and new, ones my children have made, some my mum gave me, felted Christmas animals which I have a bit of a thing about and little beaded ones that I made one year when I had barely any money. So, for me, the tree is really full of Christmas memories which I love more than any trend.

Dogcatmousedog · 13/12/2023 23:41

We always had colourful lights and my parents were very wealthy. I used bland lights for many years but we now have multi coloured lights again…my children who are now adults are so happy.
I also have the home made angel my daughter created at nursery 28 years ago and the decapitated one my son created 25 years ago 😊Have missed youngest sons one ..not sure what happened to that !
