Do you watch TV on Xmas Day?

Do any guests object to this?

We do in the morning while we're getting ready and doing lunch prep, the kids usually watch the cbeebies panto or similar then it's off till all the guests have gone home and the kids are in bed. Normally get my PJs on and open a nice bottle to go with the cheeseboard or leftover sandwich!

Both PIL and BIL have the TV on constantly and it's so off putting - trying to have a conversation while The Chase is blaring out and the kids are all bouncing off the walls because they don't want to watch crap TV quizzes. I usually sit in the kitchen with a glass of wine.

mondaytosunday · 13/12/2023 20:25

Guests? Like people that aren't family members? If they are staying over then yes st some point you might, but if they are there for half the day? No, it's rude!
We have dinner around 4.30. After opening the presents and breakfast, the cooks are cooking and someone is tidying/setting the table. The TV might be on for the kids to watch a movie, but once guests arrive it's off.

OldTinHat · 13/12/2023 20:29

Yes. Because there is no one to object and I'd be bored senseless sat on my own without some mindless entertainment.

DoAWheelie · 13/12/2023 20:30

No live TV, but we'll usually stream something like a film for everyone to watch after dinner. Everyone who needs a nap after dinner sleeps on the sofa while the rest of us watch and then we spend the rest of the evening round the table playing games.

Snazzysausage · 13/12/2023 20:31

There's only us here so yes we do.

My DC are getting picked up by their dad at 5pm. I shall remain at my parents house for a couple of hours and then return home to drink snowballs and watch Dr Who and Eastenders in the peace and quiet- pure and utter bliss!

I'll confess now that I've been excited about Christmas Eastenders since February 🙈

Constellationstation · 13/12/2023 20:33

Yes we do, love a bit of Christmas TV. Was brought up with the TV on at all times

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 13/12/2023 20:35

Not until later evening. Too busy with presents, lunch, and visiting. The people we visit don't have it on either.

pizzaHeart · 13/12/2023 20:35

We do a bit - one or two Xmas specials, no more, usually late afternoon/ evening, the morning is too busy.
No guests here.

Jellykat · 13/12/2023 20:38

Yes, Eastenders of course!
Only ever me and my boys, and they're usually somewhere else together come the evening.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/12/2023 20:38

I have never set foot in a house where the TV is on all the time in the background. Am I unusual or just middle class ?

CrebillionFils · 13/12/2023 20:39

No we don’t. We don’t have a television though so 🤷🏻‍♀️

CrebillionFils · 13/12/2023 20:41

@LindorDoubleChoc I haven’t either (I’m middle class) until I met my pil who have two televisions going 24/7.

Lifelessordinary1 · 13/12/2023 20:46

No screens at all from Xmas Eve lunchtime to Boxing Day tea time. Only exception is phone calls/texts re arrangements and if someone got a screen or games console type thing as a present.

ArsenicInTheAppleTart · 13/12/2023 20:46

Not usually but I will check if there's anything on that I might want to record to watch on another day when I know the house will be nice and quite. Just me and some chocs and some Bailey's and the Call the Midwife Crimbo special.

christmaspaws · 13/12/2023 20:57

Yes but I'll be alone so will be happily binge watching something
Definitely call the midwife and all creatures great and small

AcrossthePond55 · 13/12/2023 21:06

Of course!

I'm in the US, and first thing after we get up we turn on A Christmas Story (a network here runs it on repeat all Xmas Day) and open presents. Later it's the Disney Xmas Parade. If there's football (Pro or College) that gets turned on. In between it's a Christmas music channel (Sirius XM). No TV during dinner, just music. Then once everyone is gone, the kitchen is clean, and DH has gone to bed it's time for just me, a little bottle of Asti or sparkling moscato, and Call the Midwife Xmas Special.

PollyPeep · 13/12/2023 21:25

Generally no TV on Christmas day here. I think of Christmas day as a special day to celebrate with family. Good food, music, drinks, board games. Sitting in front of the TV or having a nap just seems such a waste! My husband's family does this, and also doesn't get dressed till afternoon and I find it all a bit depressing and everyday. I wouldn't do it during a party so I wouldn't do it on Christmas day. My family is very much about getting dressed up, drinking champagne and playing games. Now we have kids, we do more child friendly things and might have a kids Christmas film on later in the afternoon while the adults are clearing up lunch, but I wouldn't ever have the TV on throughout the day and certainly not if we had guests!

SomeoneYouLoved · 13/12/2023 21:29

No tv, we haven't got one.
Listen to music,podcasts instead.

PuppyMonkey · 13/12/2023 21:39

It wouldn’t be Christmas without the telly on after dinner and everybody moaning about how shit the festive schedule is.Grin

ANightingale · 13/12/2023 21:41

Watch the Queen's/King's speech and sometimes whatever film is on afterwards.

randomstress · 13/12/2023 21:43

No, but DH's family do.

AffIt · 13/12/2023 21:44

No, but we are the sort of extended family that MN loathes, in the sense that we like each other and chat and play games and go for walks.

I'll binge the likes of Dr Who etc on the 27th, though.

FindingMeno · 13/12/2023 21:46

No.
Whether there are guests or not.
Unless they are staying over guests I think its rude to have TV on when someone is visiting anyway.

ItsTimeToWrite · 13/12/2023 21:47

We will usually watch a Christmas film to calm the dc then me and dp will watch Eastenders.
