Do you watch TV on Xmas Day?

Do any guests object to this?

OP posts:
DitheringBlidiot · 13/12/2023 19:11

At DH family, no.
At my family's, yes.

LlynTegid · 13/12/2023 19:11

The King's Speech is obligatory.

Neriah · 13/12/2023 19:13

Dr Who is the reason I don't invite anyone around...

Els1e · 13/12/2023 19:15

Not usually. My mum watched King Charles’ speech last year but generally we don’t have tv on.

AristotlesWife · 13/12/2023 19:21

In the evening, yes. I still miss the Downton Christmas special, which used to be one of the highlights of my day!

bananamangoes · 13/12/2023 19:27

Maybe in the evening

At SIL's it's on alllll day long. Their house is tiny and the TV is huge.

Nobody actually watches it

It was even on whilst we were eating

Does my head in😆

babybythesea · 13/12/2023 19:42

Not really. We always watch the royal speech - my grandparents did so it became part of the tradition.
But other than that, no. We stay with my parents (as does my sister) so there are 11 of us. Morning is stockings and playing with those bits. Then a walk on the beach to give kids and dogs a chance to run around.
Back to cook dinner with everyone pitching in. Kids love playing with their cousins so don’t usually ask for TV but if they did it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s just never come up. Christmas dinner starts around 1./1.30.
Tree presents from family around 4. Chat, help kids with new games etc. And family games, which now involve all the children. Kids Pictionary, kids articulate- they love being a proper part of the games.
TV comes more on Boxing Day.

Gnomegnomegnome · 13/12/2023 19:45

No. I think that it’s rude if you have guests unless the guests request it on (MIL likes the Royal speech if she’s with us and we arrange lunch around it for her).

stargirl1701 · 13/12/2023 19:47

MIL and DD2 always watch The Queen/The King. We have always watched the BBC Julia D adaptations but DC are now 11 and 9 so I think that'll fall away soon.

Boxing Day is a big walk followed by nothing but TV for DC!

35965a · 13/12/2023 19:49

If we have guests then not much but if not then we do a bit if there’s a certain film or show the kids want to watch. Usually they’re knee deep in Lego, though.

GinAndJuice99 · 13/12/2023 19:49

So why are you asking? Because you have guests coming for Christmas, you want to watch some TV while they're there but your partner thinks that it'll be rude to?

Basilandmandarin · 13/12/2023 19:50

Yes we watch TV. Usually a Christmas special - Royle family, Gavin and Stacey, Only Fools, some kind of Gameshow or films.

No guests object. They normally leave a couple of hours after Christmas dinner.

cuthbertthecat · 13/12/2023 19:54

It's usually on in the background. DM likes carols from kings, we used to watch the kids stuff (like the Gruffalo) to calm them down a bit after all the excitement.

We do like stuff like the dr who special and we'll watch the ghosts special if that's on Christmas Day.

But we don't 'actively' watch it....

ThomasinaLivesHere · 13/12/2023 19:55

Usually a bit in the morning and in the evening.
I remember one year at my parents they put on Mrs Browns Boys - that was painful.

MargaritaThyme · 13/12/2023 19:57

I certainly don’t watch whatever drivel the BBC, ITV etc put on. I don’t watch bloody Eastenders any other time, so why would I do soon Christmas Day? DP is a news junkie, so Sky News will usually be on in the background with the sound turned off during the day, then we might watch Netflix or a film in the evening.
The real highlight of the day comes at 11pm when the Boxing Day test match starts in Melbourne. I open a beer & watch the summer down under while it’s dark & freezing outside.

pointythings · 13/12/2023 19:57

Yes, we do. Christmas is about family and doing what we enjoy. We also play board games, talk, cuddle the cats and share the work of preparing the food.

Mummypete · 13/12/2023 20:01

No we’re not really big TV watchers. Although this year we’re at the in laws and I don’t think I’ve ever been to their house and the TV hasn’t been on. I find it so anti social to be having a conversation while everyone has got half an eye on the TV.
The only thing I do like to watch is Call The Midwife but I save that until after Christmas to watch in peace without people talking over it!

Stress101 · 13/12/2023 20:09

Yes, we watch TV. Christmas films and Only Fools and Horses Christmas specials.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/12/2023 20:09

I would not if I had my way. But my brother, who usually comes, feels the need to try to make us all sit down and watch a film together. Last year it was Some Like It Hot, a brilliant film, agreed. But my 19 and 21 year olds were not interested and it was on a channel with 5 minutes of adverts every 20 minutes. FFS.

bonzaitree · 13/12/2023 20:09

Yes after dinner when you want a nap! 😂

ElevenSeven · 13/12/2023 20:10

No. Don’t really watch tv anyway. Music on in the evening

If anyone asks to have Mrs Brown’s Boys on, they’ll be shown the door

user1471481356 · 13/12/2023 20:10

No, never. Usually don’t watch it at all over the Christmas/new years period because there’s no time!

Girasoli · 13/12/2023 20:12

We always watch the book to cartoon adaptation in the afternoon, and then the Dr Who Christmas special (with a Baileys).

In the morning the DC are busy playing and the adults are busy cooking.

PossumintheHouse · 13/12/2023 20:16

I’ll be watching Eastenders. I’m doing the Christmas lunch for eight, so I’ll be whacking on my crappy soap and I’ll not feel sorry about it.

itsgettingweird · 13/12/2023 20:17

We have it on in the morning before heading to family.

They often have it on in the background .

Watch eastenders and CTM Xmas specials when I get home.

I find tv on in background when having it visiting guests is fine. Helps take away the feeling of always needing to find conversation! Also gives those who want some time out something to occupy their minds
