To wonder why the queue for the ladies toilets is always longer than the mens?

Today queuing for the toilet in a shop this is my observation and in general I notice it too.

The ladies toilet has a massive queue. The mens toilet has no queue.
Men are in and out of their toilets much quicker.

Do women go to the toilet more often than men then? 🤔

I honestly don’t understand what some women do in a toilet cubicle. I think some have a little nap they take that long.

I'm with you. I'm in and out. If there's no queue and me and DH go in at the same time I'm out sooner. But could be cos I can't be arsed with hand dryers and dry my hands on my hair (it improves the curl lol)

LemonPeonies · 13/12/2023 18:10

I've never taken longer than a minute or 2 in public toilets but I'm always waiting at least 10 for most other women, I really don't know what takes them so long.

SwordToFlamethrower · 13/12/2023 18:12

Women need to remove clothes, women have periods, women have more clean up, women have male amd female children to see to, women have health issues related to childbirth, women have miscarriages, women have beauty standards to keep up, there are more

Men unzip, pee and go. Sometimes they poo, but again, they do it and go.

dottypotter · 13/12/2023 18:13

Hands just dry naturally anyway.

Men unzip and let rip. Give it a shake, zip up and walk out. In the time it took me to type that, two men could have been and gone. 😁

We have to faff about putting bags on hooks, getting half undressed, then wiping, sorting bags out, washing hands etc. it adds up.

Because when men design public toilets they don't put enough provision in for women's needs.

Originally, when toilets were being added to train stations, libraries, offices they were for men only. It was a way to keep women at home.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 13/12/2023 18:14

Went to a loo recently which was attached to a service station

1 cubicle for ladies, baby change and disabled

4 urinals and one cubicle for the men

GnomeDePlume · 13/12/2023 18:14

The only time I saw the opposite was at a Jethro Tull concert some years ago. The queue of middle aged men was out of the door while there was no queue for the women.

I also privately wondered if the lighting engineer had taken account of the number of shiney heads in his preparations.

There was a distinct demographic at that concert!

imnotthatkindofmum · 13/12/2023 18:04

If you go to metal gigs the women's queue is always shorter. It's the only time I've ever experienced it.

Except the women's urinals at a festival which were empty. And clean!!

Also football matches. There's usually a much shorter queue for the women's loos at internationals or Premier League games. At my local League Two ground I've never even seen another woman in the loos.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 13/12/2023 18:15

I’m another thats in and out, but i can see that women generally have less toilet provision

Gwenhwyfar · 13/12/2023 18:15

MadamVastra · 13/12/2023 18:03

You really can't hazard a guess why

Yes, nobody is this stupid.

LinguisticallyCunning · 13/12/2023 18:15
  • urinals take up less space than cubicles so although the floor space is the same, there are fewer available piss recepticals for women
  • periods mean that women need to do more than just have a quick wee so they take more time
  • women have to remove more clothes than men to be able to have a wee, and then get dressed again, so they take longer
  • women have smaller bladders so need to go more often than men, especially when pregnant
  • women are more likely to have to accompany children so there are sometimes 3 people waiting to wee in one cubicle

I honestly don’t understand what some women do in a toilet cubicle. I think some have a little nap they take that long.

Not everyone can take a shit in 30 seconds.

Flickersy · 13/12/2023 18:16

I remember once being in a huge queue at the V&A. When it was finally my turn I went in, did the necessary, came out, and the queue hadn't moved! The lady behind me was still at the front.

I get the odd person has additional needs / period products etc that mean they take more time, but I can't believe I peed faster than about 15 other people after they'd all had a head start. 15!

I think a few people genuinely need to take more time, the others are taking the proverbial.

Alltheyearround · 13/12/2023 18:16

For people noting the washing hand thing. A study was done of men vs women hand washing at motorway service stations. Something like 80% of men didn't wash hands. Most women did. When you think about the impact that norovirus or flu or covid has on health, education, time off with sick kids etc, it would be money well spent to do a public health campaign to instill the virtues of soap and water to the male population....and more female toilets while we're at it.

stoppingby · 13/12/2023 18:17

Women have to decide firstly where to put a bag or a phone or keys (not on floor). Next up, decide if they're happy to plonk their bum on a seat or hover or if they're going to put toilet tissue on the seat, then they have to undo trousers or hitch up dress, pull down knickers and/or tights and do the deed. Then there's hand washing, checking hair in mirror, maybe lipstick touch up etc.

Men: Unzip, pee, go. Even if they use a cubicle I doubt they're overly fussed about loo paper on seat first! Hand washing optional. And to be fair, the men in my life prefer to take their time if it's not a wee, hibernating in the bathroom with a book or phone. They don't seem to like the rushed nature of things in a public loo.

Admittedly this is all a MASSIVE over generalisation based on gender stereotypes but just a few observations from a lifetime of using public loos. Grin

menopausalmare · 13/12/2023 18:18

Women are more likely to be toileting 2-3 small children who are sitting on the loo discussing whether they may or may not fancy doing a poo.

Passingthethyme · 13/12/2023 18:19

What everyone else said, plus many men don't wash their hands (what my DH tells me)

Tinkerbyebye · 13/12/2023 18:22

Because most women wash hands, men don’t

SgtJuneAckland · 13/12/2023 18:25

@Qwerty556 manned them and the showers at Glastonbury

LonelyandsadChristmas · 13/12/2023 18:25

Quite a few women don't wash hands but do make up and hair. I think lack of hand washing isn't just confined to men

Flickersy · 13/12/2023 18:26

Tinkerbyebye · 13/12/2023 18:22

Because most women wash hands, men don’t

I don't know why people keep saying this. The queues are for the toilet cubicles, not the sinks.

dottypotter · 13/12/2023 18:27

I've heard a man say he dosent need to wash his hands because he foment touch himself

OP posts:
TotteringByRosie · 13/12/2023 18:27

It's a complete failure on the part of architects who design an equal number of facilities for men and women, overlooking the fact that ladies spend more time in the loos and therefore require more toilets.

We need more female architects to design buildings giving regard to equality.

ondaytwothousand · 13/12/2023 18:31

Continuing the gender stereotyping; women often take kids in with them and anyone with kids knows what a palaver that can be - especially with big winter coats and scarfs etc.

Plus the other obvious stuff like cubicles/clothes/sanitary stuff.
