To wonder why the queue for the ladies toilets is always longer than the mens?

Today queuing for the toilet in a shop this is my observation and in general I notice it too.

The ladies toilet has a massive queue. The mens toilet has no queue.
Men are in and out of their toilets much quicker.

Do women go to the toilet more often than men then? 🤔

Men use urinals and not always cubicles. Women might need to change sanitary items which takes longer and are more likely to do their hair or apply lipstick.

SgtJuneAckland · 13/12/2023 17:57

It's because you can fit more urinals than cubicles in a similar size space, also women have to go into a cubicle lock it partially undress go to the toilet wipe, pull clothes back up, flush, exit cubicle, wash hands there will also be some women taking additional time to change san pro. IME men unzip, wee, zip up and leave, a few will also give their hands a cursory splash under the tap.

  1. Mens toilets usually have urinals which are quicker
  2. In addition to going to the toilet, women menstruate which also adds to the time
  3. Women typically have more caring duties with younger or older people
  4. 50/50 share of the toilets isn't fair for the above reasons

I honestly don’t understand what some women do in a toilet cubicle. I think some have a little nap they take that long.

dottypotter · 13/12/2023 18:00

There's always a toilet out of order in the ladies as well.😫

Because men use urinals, whereas women use cubicles.
Men go in, zip down, have a pee, zip up and done.
Women go in, adjust clothing accordingly, have a pee, change sanitary stuff if needed, adjust clothing accordingly.
That's why.

Giggorata · 13/12/2023 18:02

Women take longer to do the basic peeing, with more clothes adjustment, sitting, wiping etc, plus most of them wash their hands afterwards.
That's without menstrual or menopausal stuff to deal with, and self care/ cosmetic tasks.
Plus there are generally insufficient cubicles for the traffic.
More men can use the urinals and be in and out but the difference for women isn't reflected in the provision.

What experience do you have inside men's toilets?

MadamVastra · 13/12/2023 18:03

You really can't hazard a guess why

pashmina696 · 13/12/2023 18:03

Inadequate numbers of toilet facilities for women exist pretty much everywhere. Women also tend to be helping others, need to use cubicles and all the above reasons already mentioned mean that a 50/50 share of space will always enable many more urinals for men and as such no queues... for women to get equity we would need something like 50% more space allocated to women's facilities. I'd love to see this happen.

imnotthatkindofmum · 13/12/2023 18:04

If you go to metal gigs the women's queue is always shorter. It's the only time I've ever experienced it.

Except the women's urinals at a festival which were empty. And clean!!

tulippa · 13/12/2023 18:05

Because when men design public toilets they don't put enough provision in for women's needs.

EVHead · 13/12/2023 18:05

As I get older I’m finally understanding why some women take so long in there. 🤭

DrFoxtrot · 13/12/2023 18:05

Going off previous threads, some of the extra time in the cubicle is taken up by some women making 'nests' of toilet paper as they don't want their arses to touch the seat. Also probably the cause of toilet paper shortages and blocked toilets.

megletthesecond · 13/12/2023 18:07

Because its mostly men who designed existing buildings. They don't care or notice that their daughters and partners have to wait longer and don't install enough toilets for women.

Danielle9891 · 13/12/2023 18:08

Men just rush in, whip it out, pee and rush out again. Ladies stop to pull their trousers down, wipe themselves, fix their clothes, wash their hands and fix makeup or that.
I've worked at a few restaurants and bars and I've noticed men use less toilet paper and soap. I might have to fill up the soap in the men's every month or 2, while I will fill up the woman's every few days. There's a huge difference.

piglet81 · 13/12/2023 18:08

It’s ridiculous. My workplace is about 75% women. Recently a plumbing problem meant the ladies’ loos were out of order and we had to use the gents’, whereupon we realised each floor has a ladies’ with four cubicles, an accessible (unisex) loo and a gents’ with four cubicles PLUS four urinals. So the small number of men have at least twice as much provision even though they don’t need it! Completely infuriating Angry

Gowlett · 13/12/2023 18:09

Men have a handy wee wee tube called a willy.
Quick & easy. And they don’t wash their hands.

I honestly don’t understand what some women do in a toilet cubicle. I think some have a little nap they take that long.

Well, for about three years in my 40s I was bleeding so heavily for weeks at a time that I was often having to change my clothes after I’d bled through what I was wearing yet again, as well as change tampons, and arrange a new giant pad or pads, wipe down the loo and sometimes the floor, and use a wipe on my hands so I didn’t horrify people with their bloodied state when I came out. I can assure you I wasn’t napping.

Jackiebrambles · 13/12/2023 18:09

Surely anyone who has ever been to any public toilets knows this? It’s because women have to remove clothing and sit down /change tampons, etc. As opposed to unzip a fly, wee, zip up.

ManateeFair · 13/12/2023 18:09

It's solely because women find a cubicle, go in and lock the door, possibly take off a coat and hang up a bag, then undo and pull down trousers/tights/knickers, sit down, wee, wipe, pull up and refasten clothing, flush, gather bag and coat again.

Men, by contrast, just walk in, unzip, wee in a urinal and rezip. It simply doesn't take as long.

Also, because men's loos usually have urinals for weeing and a couple of cubicles as well, if someone does need a good old sitdown for the obvious reason, they aren't taking up a weeing space for the duration. Whereas if a woman finds herself in need of the kind of poo that's going to take ten minutes, then that effectively reduces the number of available weeing spaces.

Yep, or they "hover" and get piss on the seat that they don't bother wiping up 🙄

bilbodog · 13/12/2023 18:10

You are being unreasonable - how can you not work this out?

Sadly I think you are right about not washing hands 🤢
