To ask how much cash you have?

For various reasons I’ve been thinking that I need to be able to have cash to hand in case of emergencies…
usually in my house we have about £20 or so between 3 adults…

how much cash could you actually lay your hands on tonight if the banking system went down?

I have the £1 coin that I use for a locker when I go swimming. Probably wouldn't last long in a crisis...

amusedbush · 13/12/2023 11:08

I know I've got a £1 coin because I used it in the trolley at Morrisons last week, plus maybe 50p in other coins. I never carry cash; I tend to view it as "free" money because it's not coming out of my bank balance, so I fritter it.

DH always has cash though, especially at this time of year (he's a postie and many of his customers give him a cash tip in a Christmas card).

SpeedyDrama · 13/12/2023 11:14

I have £2 in cash, £1 is my trolley money that would be a nightmare to lose and the other I found in my car (it’s an absolute dump at the moment so probably another few quid rolled from my coat pocket at some point 😳). I hate carrying cash, I don’t even own a purse anymore. If the banking system went down tomorrow I’d be in deep shit, but on the plus side so would 99% of the population.

OneMiniMincePieTooFar · 13/12/2023 11:15

Ur, maybe a dusty fiver in my purse - if I could remember where that is.

It's probably so old it's got the last monarch on it, though Grin

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 13/12/2023 11:17

About £4. I'm not particularly worried re global banking shutdown.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 13/12/2023 11:18

About 3.5k . I should really put it In the bank . dp hates having that much cash laying around
I'd probably keep £500 of it just in case

IncompleteSenten · 13/12/2023 11:18

About a fiver in coppers.

rainpleasestop · 13/12/2023 11:21

£500 notes
£300 odd £1 & £2s

OldTinHat · 13/12/2023 11:26

I've got a fiver stuffed in my phone case that will be spent tomorrow night at a pub quiz and £400 hidden away for emergencies which I try and forget I have.

No savings or offshore bank accounts!

mindutopia · 13/12/2023 11:28

I did have a £20 note but gave that to the school donation box yesterday at an event. Currently, I have 60p and a euro (which I use as a trolley token!).

Dh often has cash though as he is self-employed and some people still pay in cash and because we don't live near a bank, or at least not one that seems to be open normal hours, it's actually a real pain to deposit. So dh likely has a few hundred somewhere. If it was up to me though, I'd be screwed in a global banking collapse as I never use cash.

OldTinHat · 13/12/2023 11:29

Oh! I forgot the £1 coin I keep in the car as a trolley token!

peakygold · 13/12/2023 11:37

200 in euros (for a birthday gift), and almost £180 sterling. I pay in cash everywhere, and if they don't accept cash, I dump whatever I was going to buy and walk out.

Wittyname10 · 13/12/2023 11:45

Nothing. Zero.

I don't see a need for it. I have my phone which has a card carrying case, my wallet hasn't seen daylight for months.

TheFluffiestCat · 13/12/2023 14:18

DH has a jar of coins that he empties his pockets into. It's usually a few hundred quid by the end of the year. He's saving up for a PS5 but would let me use it if the banks went down and we needed food shopping.

Verv · 13/12/2023 14:20

None, id be stuffed as I hate cash and dont carry it. Even my car £1 is a trolley token.

Therealjudgejudy · 13/12/2023 15:58

€300 in my savings challenge binder currently and €90 in my personal spends envelope.

If you know, you know..!

C1N1C · 13/12/2023 16:03

Hard cash, maybe £100 in wallet.

10k+ in bullion.

Dis626 · 13/12/2023 16:08

about £2

RudsyFarmer · 13/12/2023 16:09

Probably about £70

BIossomtoes · 13/12/2023 16:09

None. Actually, that’s wrong - I found 20p in my coat pocket the other day.

Yeah, that'll show 'em. Some minimum wage pleb can put it back on the shelf - don't you be troubling yourself with anything like that; it's beneath you.

PamelaParis · 13/12/2023 16:12

About £40. Usually it's a bit more but I used cash to pay a taxi the other day.

I've only started carrying cash regularly fairly recently. My debit card failed in the supermarket and I had no other way to pay for the shopping so had to leave it all.

sunr111se · 13/12/2023 16:12

46p

MadeOfAllWork · 13/12/2023 16:15

£20 note, a small amount of change, about £2.50 and €40.

Buttercup176 · 13/12/2023 16:17

Probably a couple of hundred, more if we raided the kids money boxes.
