To ask how much cash you have?

For various reasons I’ve been thinking that I need to be able to have cash to hand in case of emergencies…
usually in my house we have about £20 or so between 3 adults…

how much cash could you actually lay your hands on tonight if the banking system went down?

Same

RufustheFactualReindeer · 12/12/2023 22:36

Probably around £800/£900

momager1 · 12/12/2023 22:37

I have about 25,000 pesos in my safe right now. Not as amazing as it sounds lol. It is about 500 dollars USD. I only keep that amount in the house as we live in the Dominican Republic and bank machines are notorious for running out of money and debit machines in the grocery stores go down all the time. I take some out every time I go anywhere and if my debit or visa doesn't work I have money. Most times it is good and it just goes back in the safe lol.

LisaD1 · 12/12/2023 22:37

I doubt we could even rustle up a tenner between us. Never have cash in the house

dothehokeycokey · 12/12/2023 22:37

Between £500. -£1000 in a locked safe in cash,a £20 note In my phone case if I get stuck, and about £100 in change and notes floating around my bags.

I do like to pay independents with cash where I can to save them card fees etc and I always tip in cash wherever we go to eat/drink etc.

There are also some amazing up and coming young musicians busking in our main town on weekends so I always take cash to put in their pots.
It's always lovely to hear them and shows great motivation from them

SophiaElise · 12/12/2023 22:39

£120 and a few pound coins. Was £150+ earlier today but I had a cash payments only manicure earlier this evening.

Member786488 · 12/12/2023 22:39

I’m like the vast majority of you, but am thinking that I might start to put a bit aside.

I agree that in a way it seems pointless if there is ever a banking issue, but equally something is better than nothing surely? I couldn’t even fill my car with petrol, or buy some food with what I have down the sofa at the moment.

Definitely £300 in notes in my desk drawer (unintentionally) plus probably £50 in my purse. DH said he thinks he has around £130 in his wallet and reminded we have quite a bit Chinese yuan, Sing dollars and Omani rials in his desk drawer, too, for what use that would be if the UK banks went down...

So maybe £500 without starting changing foreign currency.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 12/12/2023 22:40

I also have a £1.50 in the Peter rabbit 50ps well one Peter rabbit one and 2 Tom kitten ones but they have a significant meaning to me and even if I was desperate for cash I definitely wouldn't be parting with those

Dweetfidilove · 12/12/2023 22:40

£25 in my purse, £3 in the car and full tin of coins under my bed.

LovedMyLastNameItHadToGo · 12/12/2023 22:40

I think about £2-£3k. Often find myself needing cash for tradespeople, kids gifts (tenner in a card etc). This time of year useful for school fairs.

Member786488 · 12/12/2023 22:41

Those (few) of you who hold £1k+, is it deliberately kept in cash?

SmokySilverShine · 12/12/2023 22:41

None

Sallyingon · 12/12/2023 22:41

I've got £12 in my purse given to me today from a colleague as a contribution for a gift I'd bought for a mutual friend. My dh has about £8 in his unusual 50p collection. It would have to be a dire emergency to crack into that though. My teenage son is usually good for a couple of pounds if needed.

Member786488 · 12/12/2023 22:41

@LovedMyLastNameItHadToGo that’s a lot of school fairs!

I'd be lucky if I had £1 we never use cash these days

TheFrendo · 12/12/2023 22:42

I always keep some cash.

More than £1000.

I want to be able to buy things when technology breaks.

FishPie2 · 12/12/2023 22:43

£200 of US dollars - £1400 in Euros - odds and sods of other currencies.

About £14 in my purse for the window cleaner.

Ponderingwindow · 12/12/2023 22:43

Always have at least 500 around.

dontforgetme · 12/12/2023 22:43

Actual cash I have £2.46 Grin

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/12/2023 22:44

$150 (was in the US last week) plus about £300 equivalent in various other currencies (I used to travel a lot so have my own mini stash of about 15 different currencies).

In actual £, about £1 and a load of pennies😂(I do usually keep an emergency £20 in my purse but used it recently and haven't got round to replacing it).

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/12/2023 22:44

I have 20p. DH has about £50 in his coin jar.

CalamityA · 12/12/2023 22:45

£1000 in the safe for this type of emergency.
