To ask how much cash you have?

For various reasons I’ve been thinking that I need to be able to have cash to hand in case of emergencies…
usually in my house we have about £20 or so between 3 adults…

how much cash could you actually lay your hands on tonight if the banking system went down?

In the house pretty much nothing.

Hidden in the car around £50.

I'm paranoid I will need petrol one day and my cards won't work. (I mean, it's never happened yet so don't actually think this is likely!)

Duckingella · 12/12/2023 23:23

Ten pounds in coins and a bunch of sliver and coppers;maybe 12-13 pounds altogether.

mondaytosunday · 12/12/2023 23:23

£30 and €20 between me and my daughter maybe slightly more. Last time I used cash was to tip my hairdresser. Time before that - was to tip my hairdresser two months before!

Daughtersandbristolian · 12/12/2023 23:24

I always use cash as if we don’t use it we will loar it and it’ll be a digital world forever, imagine it getting hacked and no access to your money / gone forever. I always have it and feel better with it x

PeloMom · 12/12/2023 23:25

About 150 and I remember drawing them from the atm about 5ish years ago.

MarleyandMarleyWoooo · 12/12/2023 23:27

About £1800-£2000 probably. Some customers prefer to pay cash sometimes (own business).
It only really gets spent on the farrier and if I buy a marketplace bargain so it just kind of builds up slowly until I put it into our sons savings account and start again.

HighlandCowSaysBooNotMoo · 12/12/2023 23:27

50p in my purse and about £30 in bank.. pay day is so close yet so far

listsandbudgets · 12/12/2023 23:27

probably about £150. you've madame think OP. might invest in a small safe and put some more aside

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 12/12/2023 23:29

Probably about £100 but that’ll go in tips and Christmas presents for nephew and niece.

I should get a £££ wad and keep it somewhere safe… just in case.

janicegarvey · 12/12/2023 23:30

I've got about £1800 in notes 😳

DelilahJane · 12/12/2023 22:19

£1500 in a lock box , about £70 in a money bag in the kitchen. £15 in the pram bag and random loose coins plus a £5 note in the car.

I'm early 30s

Thanks for telling us your age

AndThatWasNY · 12/12/2023 23:30

I always keep about £300 in various places hidden in the house just in case (I lose my debit card again..)

thecatsthecats · 12/12/2023 23:31

About £250 GBP, £70 in Bosnian marks, €20 and up to a tenner each of a dozen other currencies.

WhatNoSauce · 12/12/2023 23:32

A few K in a drawer and a couple of hundred in my purse. There was a £20 note in the glovebox of my car, but I don't know if that's still there or not.
I always use cash where possible.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 12/12/2023 23:32

About 50 quid between us. The majority of it is in DD13s money pot.

janicegarvey · 12/12/2023 23:33

Member786488 · 12/12/2023 22:41

Those (few) of you who hold £1k+, is it deliberately kept in cash?

Yep it's deliberate

HomelessAngua · 12/12/2023 23:33

About £400 plus £60 in purse

Sgtmajormummy · 12/12/2023 23:33

€5 in my purse. I feel a bit vulnerable with any less than €10.
We take out €250 at a time and put most of it in the home safe. I use it for out-of-hours petrol, delivery driver tips and tiny purchases like at the newsagent’s.

Gingerlygreen · 12/12/2023 23:43

£600-ish in my £2 coin tin that I save and about £400 in my purse ready to go in the bank on Friday.

I also have a 4 pint milk bottle about 2/3 full of loose change.

CandyCaneLane0 · 12/12/2023 23:55

About £1200

reasoningwithstupidity · 13/12/2023 00:05

I always keep a couple of K in the house. It's a contingency fund for emergencies but I add to it regularly too as It's useful for paying the cleaner, gardener etc as I pay them on a visit by visit basis. I also have to give my son money for school and he doesn't use his bank card. My youngest doesn't have a bank account yet so I also have her savings in a different locked box.

BeaLola · 13/12/2023 00:13

About 2-3k, live rurally and pay cash for eating out/to small businesses etc and nearest cashpoint some way away.

DelusionalBrilliance · 13/12/2023 00:22

£1 coin always in my bag for the gym locker or a trolley, and a £20 note that’s been in my bag for about 2 years. DH on the other hand has cash stored all over the house, car, coat pockets and so on.

DelusionalBrilliance · 13/12/2023 00:24

Actually, I’m so stupid. If we are counting other currency then about £150k but that’s purely because DH is a numismatist and it’s literally his profession 😂 but it’s kept in locked safes with camera on it and an alarmed steel door so not sure that counts!

allitdoesisrain · 13/12/2023 00:25

Less than 10, more than 5. I don't carry much cash and very rarely use it. I should probably have a little more on hand in case.
