To ask how much cash you have?

For various reasons I’ve been thinking that I need to be able to have cash to hand in case of emergencies…
usually in my house we have about £20 or so between 3 adults…

how much cash could you actually lay your hands on tonight if the banking system went down?

About 150. More if we assume that currency conversion places remain in operation and are able to convert notes from other currencies to GBP.

OwOwHolyCow · 12/12/2023 22:21

I have an emergency £1,000. It was part of a very small inheritance and I didn’t want it frittered away on groceries or bills. I had actually forgotten about it until I saw this post. I do only have £62 in my bank though and there are still several days until payday!

RaininSummer · 12/12/2023 22:21

About 35 quid. I do have loads of food in house though as never knowingly understocked so no access to money wouldn't be an immediate peril.

LakieLady · 12/12/2023 22:22

I managed to lose one of my bank cards last week. It didn't matter too much, as I have a second account I could use, but it made me realise that keeping some cash might be a good idea.

It was 9 days before the replacement card arrived, and I'd have been a bit fucked if I hadn't had that second account. The nearest branch I could have gone to get cash is 12 miles away since they closed the local one.

Member786488 · 12/12/2023 22:22

If I rummaged around I could probably muster another few quid - I’m just having apocalyptic thoughts as a pp suggested. Not that having £20 or so would help in the long run, but equally, having nothing either wouldn’t help…

realistically I think some sort of hack on the banks is a distinct possibility and therefore something I don’t have to queue for might be useful

User2856948 · 12/12/2023 22:23

I have about £20, DH probably has about £200

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/12/2023 22:25

£20 Always have one in my phone case just in case I need a taxi home( I'm disabled)
Having said that, it's been there for months

Benibidibici · 12/12/2023 22:25

None lol

But I'm a tiny bit preppy. Could last a while on the foodstuff we have in.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 12/12/2023 22:27

About 13 pence that's been hanging around since I last used cash, about 6 months ago.

AutumnLeaves333 · 12/12/2023 22:28

this morning I had to find £6 for nativity tickets, 1.50 for dc2 to buy Xmas tat sold at school to raise money for something, and £1 for ‘wear something Christmassy’ to gymnastics club to raise money for a charity, and I can tell you that it was a struggle!

My purse had absolutely no cash in it so the nativity ticket money ended up being mostly a collection of 10 and 20ps that had built up around the house shoved in an envelope, the gymnastics money was my emergency trolley pound out the car and dc2 took money out of her own piggy bank in the end 🤦‍♀️

MrsAllsorts · 12/12/2023 22:32

I have £42 in my purse and a few coppers.

lucya66 · 12/12/2023 22:32

£1k+ in safe

PepsiCoco · 12/12/2023 22:33

About £2

Showmethesunny · 12/12/2023 22:34

£100

ypu never know though when covid came I had £300 in cash I couldn’t spend!

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/12/2023 22:34

In an apocalypse what you really need is a gun and some gold or diamonds. I’m not sure cash would help. Think of those Germans in 1926 taking a wheelbarrow of cash to buy a loaf of bread.

CranfordScones · 12/12/2023 22:34

I keep an emergency stash - about £200.

It gets raided (and replaced) occasionally - usually when I need to pay someone in cash and can't get out to the cashpoint.

Usually have about £30 to £100 in my purse.

emotionalpuddle · 12/12/2023 22:34

I have a few K's hidden away for emergencies incase I need cash but can't get to the bank/cash point etc. I did use some of it for home improvements a few months ago. I put so much into it each month.. wondering if I'm odd for doing it though.

aintnospringchicken · 12/12/2023 22:35

83p.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 12/12/2023 22:35

I have a Scottish £10 note with otters on and a few of the Peter Rabbit & Paddington 50ps in a box somewhere that I’ve kept because I liked the designs so probably around £15 in the house. I don’t have my purse to hand right now but will have a bit more in there, not sure how much but would guess around £5ish but could be a bit more/ less. But probably around £20 in total.

SpringingJoy · 12/12/2023 22:35

Dh is a taxi driver so he always has a load of cash. He has one of those metal money tins which he keeps cash in until he banks it/pays his rent etc.

There's about £2k in there at the moment we could get if there was an absolute energency. He's generally got a float of about £300 at all times and it will vary between £300-£3000 at different points in the month.

If it was down to me we'd probably muster about 36p from one of the pockets in my coat 😂

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 12/12/2023 22:36

About 15p

TomatoSandwiches · 12/12/2023 22:36

Whatever is in the change jar and a few pound coins on my dresser.

ScarlettSunset · 12/12/2023 22:36

£32.
But for months it's just been the £2 and I only got some cash out a few days ago because I expected to need it that day (but then didn't).

Peanutbutterismyjam · 12/12/2023 22:36

We have a few hundred in a locked box. I usually have about £40 in my purse (been caught out to many times as I'm always losing my card!).
My parents live close by so I can usual get cash from them if needed.
