To wonder why black hair dye is so popular

Lots of women of all ages seem to dye their hair jet black, even though black box dye can look super flat and draining on some complexions (particularly people with pale skin) and it's quite aging? I'm just wondering why really jet dark black is so popular? Do you dye your hair black and why? I get it can be part of a certain aesthetic (goth or 30s/40s pin-up look etc.)

In comparison, I get why women go blonde or brown/caramel when it isn't their natural colour - the right shade can be very brightening and look youthful. (For context my greys have really taken off recently and I've been thinking about hair dye a lot!)

I'm with you, OP!

I have naturally black hair that I dyed blonde for years. When I wanted to go back to black I box dyed it and it was so dark it almost looked blue and looked too severe.
Not natural at all.

I think some women (or those who have natural light hair) like the bold look and the contrast between their skin/eye colour and hair color.
Hairdressers cost a fortune too

I would be less concerned about what another woman chooses to do to her appearance and more concerned about why you judge or care about how someone looks to you.

Women aren’t here to make the world look prettier for your eyes.

Waiting for the third comment, this site never disappoints

KinS24 · 11/12/2023 16:15

Well I guess most people in the world have naturally black hair so it’s probably the most popular colour. Just doesn’t suit many Europeans.

Crazycrazylady · 11/12/2023 16:16

Op. To be fair I don't think a lot of the time it's on purpose. Box dyes can come out much darker than the box particularly on grey hair so I've used dark brown in the past and ended up with that blue black colour you've described and it's almost impossible to colour over it then and it has to grow out . I

Sususudio · 11/12/2023 16:17

because I am Asian! And have naturally raven hair. I am experimenting with dark brown now though as I get older. Black doesn't drain everyone though.

Beezknees · 11/12/2023 16:18

It depends on your colouring. I dye my hair black. Blonde does not suit me. My colouring is similar to Liv Tyler/Courteney Cox.

Headband · 11/12/2023 16:19

My friend dyes her hair jet black, she looks amazing. You could equally ask why some women bleach their hair, horses for courses 🤷‍♀️

Fudgeycake · 11/12/2023 16:19

@AzureBlue99 I expected that sort of thing to be the very first comment! Bit slow today.

@Ihaterhymingrabbit I'm absolutely delighted for people to do what they want with their hair! Like I said in my post, it CAN look really great, especially as part of a certain look. Jmo.

Because it's almost impossible to mess up, it's the easiest thing to do on yourself and will cover pretty much any mess up you might have made.

RestingCatsArseFace · 11/12/2023 16:23

Also there are so many shades of red and ginger used by older ladies, with an inch of salt & pepper roots. I assume it is to disguise the fact they are going grey but unless it is done regularly it is not a disguise at all and just makes them look their age but redder.

Then there are women who dye their roots dark instead of letting their blonde hair grow.

No accounting for folk... If it makes you feel better just do it.

MarthaMayWho · 11/12/2023 16:25

I would guess because we'll over 50 % of the population are shades 1-4 naturally so black to brown. Yes, in England we have a slightly higher proportion of 5+ shades including natural blondes and redheads and yes, often we look terrible with black. However, even then if you have the right complexion it can look absolutely stroking. (Not me though, curse my miss piggy skintone)

Black reflects light better, can be a good cover for terrible previous dye jobs, contrasts with unnatural colours such as red or neons.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/12/2023 16:25

I suit black better than my natural dark brown.
I've got an olive complexion though so I don't look washed out.

Mothership4two · 11/12/2023 16:26

You do see what looks like dyed black hair a lot on woman nowadays. It is often too dark for their skin tone.

I know a fair, blonde, blue eyed young woman (basically with the "English Rose" complexion) who dyes her hair black and it doesn't suit her. It makes her look dull and ages her IMO. She is obviously very happy with it. I'm sure back in the day people said the same about perms - I look back at old photos of me and wonder what I was thinking.

I don't see a problem with having a conversation about beauty trends.

Crazycrazylady · 11/12/2023 16:27

Also I had black black hair as a child but am almost totally great. Even though it was my natural hair colour once would be if I had t gone grey. I've family members that have lightened from black to mid dark brown as they've aged .

This. It’s also very difficult to lift without it turning orange if you’ve been box dying for years so once you have started it’s hard to get rid of.

MarthaMayWho · 11/12/2023 16:28

Black can really make blue and green eyes pop too.
I can't say I've noticed this as a trend, as far as I can tell blonde is still by far the most popular with thirties plus and candy/neons in twenties.

RuthW · 11/12/2023 16:29

Must be wear you live. I've not seen anyone with jet black coloured hair for years.

NonPlayerCharacter · 11/12/2023 16:30

A lot of people want to change their colour and going darker is less scary than bleaching. There's also a myth that black suits everyone (hence every woman supposedly needing a LBD etc).

blackheartsgirl · 11/12/2023 16:32

I can’t afford to go to the hair dressers every six weeks to have it bleached blond or light brown, my hairs grey now so I dye it a very dark brown.

shrug. I don’t give a fuck really, I have very dark brown eyes and it’s just easier for me.

im an ugly mug anyway, might as well be ugly and not skint 😂

orchardsquare · 11/12/2023 16:33

I used to dye my hair black when I was younger, as I liked the goth aesthetic. You are right though it does make hair look flat. The worst thing is you need permanent dye to get the really jet black look, but with naturally lighter hair the roots will always look terrible. In retrospect the ashy brown look would have been much better.

ThereSnowLimit · 11/12/2023 16:35

I think the same about blondes So many frazzled, dry bottle blondes who really don’t suit it.

Each to their own, eh?

Pizzanightagain · 11/12/2023 16:36

I think black hair looks lovely.
I have the palest skin, freckles and very light hair and eyes. I can just about get away with a medium brown if I get makeup on and it does make eyes pop. So would love to be able to have black hair but wouldn't work on me.

Shiningout · 11/12/2023 16:36

Id rather dye my hair black than ruin it by bleaching it to blonde, I find my mouse brown hair boring and need to cover greys anyway. Who cares?

pontipinemum · 11/12/2023 16:37

My mam used to dye her hair very black in her 40s it wasn't great on her. She is very pale and it did age her. She's 55 now and goes for a more dark brownish/ caramel tone it looks a lot better.

She is naturally very dark brown. I think when I start to go grey I will probably opt for a shade lighter than my natural chocolate sort of brown.
