To wonder why black hair dye is so popular

Lots of women of all ages seem to dye their hair jet black, even though black box dye can look super flat and draining on some complexions (particularly people with pale skin) and it's quite aging? I'm just wondering why really jet dark black is so popular? Do you dye your hair black and why? I get it can be part of a certain aesthetic (goth or 30s/40s pin-up look etc.)

In comparison, I get why women go blonde or brown/caramel when it isn't their natural colour - the right shade can be very brightening and look youthful. (For context my greys have really taken off recently and I've been thinking about hair dye a lot!)

There are lots of women of Asian or African heritage whose hair is black.

Keilagh · 11/12/2023 19:10

@NonPlayerCharacter Is it racist and offensive to Scandinavians to dislike the pale skin + blonde hair combo? If that’s what you think then crack on and call me whatever you like 🤣

Sure, but the point is- there is nothing special about that hairstyle/colour that projects "youth" more so than black simply because we all associate it with more mature women anyway.

"Youth" isn't the same as "youthfulness". The style is meant to give some lift and colour; it's not meant to make you look like a teenager. Sure, we associate it with a certain age, but it can still be more flattering than other things that the same aged person could wear that would make them look duller.

It isn't supposed to make them look 16! It's supposed to be a flattering cut and colour as opposed to an ageing one.

Yes, it can be, on the right person. So can glossy black hair! There is nothing magical about the colour caramel that makes everyone look younger as it depends on your skin tone etc. I'd look hideous with that colour hair.

If they were going around calling it "rank", "disgusting" and "gross", yes. But only you are doing that. And you like ableist slurs too.

I would think you were a troll because of your gratuitous levels of ignorance and offensiveness, but your defensiveness and fury seem pretty genuine, so I have to conclude that you....really are like this. Wow.

Yes, it would be

Any other hair and skin colours you dislike?

Oh yes, black hair can look absolutely beautiful, no question.

I know what OP means because it is a very strong colour and I don't think it works on everyone. Caramel is probably easier to wear for many people. But yes, it can look gorgeous and anyway, if someone likes it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

PiIIock · 11/12/2023 19:16

Saying something like 'black washed out pale skin, lighter colours are more flattering in my view' is fine

'Ew no white/black woman looks good with that hair colour, gross' is offensive and getting into very questionable territory.

NonPlayerCharacter · 11/12/2023 19:04

What are you even talking about? I'm referring directly to your spiteful posts insulting anyone with a certain colouring and the plain lies you're telling about them. Are you now just trying plain obfuscation?

Let me spell it out for you. You said I called someone mentally backwards for ’telling me how offensive I was being’. False.

As you said to me a few posts ago, why start lying about a post that's right there for anyone to check? Tut tut.

Nah just white people with black hair 🥰

Teddleshon · 11/12/2023 19:19

I think it’s very aging for European women as they get older. Especially when they have long hair. Amal Clooney imo looks so much better now she has lightened her hair.

There is a massive difference between "black hair can be harsh, it drains some people" and "pale skin with black hair looks disgusting, rank and gross and anyone who does it thinks they look like Megan Fox and anyone who objects to me saying this is mentally subnormal".

I mean, it's like the difference between a gentle reminder and a kick in the nutsack. Nobody could actually fail to spot it.

JustPickleRick · 11/12/2023 19:22

Because its cheap.

Is it cheaper than other colours?

Passingthethyme · 11/12/2023 19:24

I'd say more probably dye blonde which often doesn't suit their skin tone and looks obvious and not great when the roots grow out. But it doesn't bother me ... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Blonde you pay a lot for in the salon. A decent brown you can pay a lot for too.
I can't imagine anyone going to the hairdressers and requesting black.... black is a box dye and box dye is cheap 🤷🏼‍♀️

craniol · 11/12/2023 19:27

Women who are naturally be quite fair dye their hair black and then fake tan. It creates a Kim Kardashian type of look so I suppose that’s the inspiration. It’s a sort of racially ambiguous look. I’m not saying that they’re actually trying to pass for a different race, but just that it’s a fashionable look.

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 11/12/2023 19:28

I think it was me who @Keilagh implied was "mentally backwards".

She obviously has a chip on her shoulder about something but should realise that some of have the natural combination that she finds abhorrent (black hair and v pale skin). And calling anyone with my colouring rank and gross is pretty offensive. I am personally not offended because I think her opinion is not worth paying heed to.

My dear old Irish granny used to blame the Spanish pirates for all the dark haired Irish beauty 😉🤣

gamerchick · 11/12/2023 19:28

Tbh I think the same about blonde. Fry your hair to look ridiculous. Hardly anyone suits it. Especially when their roots come in.

QueenofTerrasen · 11/12/2023 19:29

@Keilagh You might think black hair and pale skin is disgusting, but it's nothing compared to your attitude/personality. I'd be embarrassed if I were you.

constancee · 11/12/2023 19:40

I'd love to have black hair, but it wouldn't suit me. I think it looks best if your natural hair colour is close to black.

constancee · 11/12/2023 19:43

Is it a popular choice, OP? I didn't know. I know of two older people who use it to hide the grey, but black was their natural hair colour.

Poudretteite · 11/12/2023 19:45

Haven't RTFT but when dark hair starts going grey, medium or dark brown is the easiest and least shit box dye colour to put on. Lighter ones can look weird, uneven and orangey but at least the brown and black looks normal. Also colours usually come out much darker. I used medium brown once and my hair went jet black.

I dye my hair black but I do not fake tan!

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 11/12/2023 19:57

Personally I dye my hair black because I like it 🤷‍♀️.

I have green eyes and when I have black hair I just think they stand out more than they do when I have my naturally blonde hair.
