To wonder why black hair dye is so popular

Lots of women of all ages seem to dye their hair jet black, even though black box dye can look super flat and draining on some complexions (particularly people with pale skin) and it's quite aging? I'm just wondering why really jet dark black is so popular? Do you dye your hair black and why? I get it can be part of a certain aesthetic (goth or 30s/40s pin-up look etc.)

In comparison, I get why women go blonde or brown/caramel when it isn't their natural colour - the right shade can be very brightening and look youthful. (For context my greys have really taken off recently and I've been thinking about hair dye a lot!)

Cillian Murphy has brown hair. I was thinking of courtney Cox. It suited her and she's pale, but it's a tough look to pull off. Maybe Courtney Cox has cool colouring.

She's the ultimate in cool colouring. That's why they put her in red and black so much in Friends. She wears the hell out of them. She's the ultimate classic Snow White...white skin, black hair, red lips.

Nonsense? It’s called my opinion. It looks rank on any white person tbh including Dita Von Whoever

How can you make a universal statement and then complain when someone calls it nonsense?

Black hair on pale skin looks striking if the cut and makeup is right.

I made a ‘universal statement’? Am I the spokesperson for the entire population? Do I need to include a disclaimer after every single post to declare that I’m speaking subjectively? Give over 🤣

YouHaveAnArse · 11/12/2023 18:36

Dita Von Teese, a famously extremely attractive woman, looks 'rank'. Right-o.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/12/2023 18:36

I dye mine black - I’m naturally very dark brown- because if I use a brown /black or any shade of brown, my greys go red.

I do know some girls who dyed it to look like Megan Fox tbf.

I did say in another post it’s my personal opinion and that I just don’t find the colour combination appealing. Of course others will find it attractive that’s why they dye it in the first place. I don’t feel the need to put a disclaimer after every single post to remind people that I’m talking subjectively & that I’m not the spokesperson for the entire population.

Sure you do, sure you do.

You said people with the colour look disgusting and rank and then, when you were told how offensive you were being, decided the problem was that others are "mentally subnormal". I can only assume you must be trying to be ignorant and offensive on every level, because it's hard to be this nasty accidentally.

CleverLilViper · 11/12/2023 18:39

I've always wanted to be brave enough to dye my hair black!

I've got naturally very dark brown hair so it wouldn't be a huge difference-but it would take out the natural red undertones I have in my hair and I'm not sure I'm ready. I do have an olive complexion, though so I think it would work.

I think sometimes when it looks "flat" or "dull" or as I like to think of it as "inky" is when they're trying to dye over excessively damaged hair, probably from years of bleach. That's when it tends to take on a dull, one-dimensional tone as the hair is simply too porous to hold colour in a healthy way and as black is a colour favoured to hide a multitude of sins-it's the one that can come out looking worse.

Also, what is often missed is that hair dyes often come out darker than advertised. So, you can get what you think is a dark brown shade, and end up with black-and that again, is all dictated on the state of your hair in the first place.

It like rank on every white person, is a universal declaration. What is your problem though, I don't understand why you feel so strongly about this topic.

Black hair on white women looks awesome if it's styled well. Cope.

SquashPenguin · 11/12/2023 18:44

I dye my hair black. I’m pale with green eyes. Sorry if that offends anyone 🤣

DeadButDelicious · 11/12/2023 18:44

I'm naturally fair and dye mine black, l like it, it suits my spooky aesthetic and I can do it myself so it's cheap. I never 'outgrew' my goth phase (a goth is for life not just for Halloween after all) and I have no intentions of doing so either! My natural shade of ginger with a smattering of grey just isn't the look I'm going for 😂. Once it's uniformly grey I'll be growing it out and having a single black streak at the front. I like it, I don't really care whether other people think it looks flat or 'rank' or whatever. Last time I checked my hair grew off my head so I'll carry on as I am thanks!

Unless someone has naturally tanned skin it just looks disgusting. In their minds they look like Megan Fox, but they definitely don’t 🫢

😂😂😂 let's see a picture of your hair then! Do you also think it looks disgusting when a darker skinned person has light hair?

DeadButDelicious · 11/12/2023 18:48

Oh and I don't want to look like Megan Fox either. I'm going for Morticia. Failing most days but that's the dream. 😂😂

ANightingale · 11/12/2023 18:49

It used to look good when I was in my 20s; tried it once late 30s and it really aged me so I wouldn't do it again.

User0224 · 11/12/2023 18:52

Personally I think nothing looks more aging than the classic shoulder length cut with caramel and blonde highlights that women get to look more “youthful”, as you say. Name one genuinely young person with that hair…?

I don’t like the colour combination of light skin + black hair, so yes, in my opinion it looks bad on all white skinned people. If I look at something & think it looks gross then no it’s not ‘nonsense’. I could easily say the same about you thinking it looks awesome, this is a fun game isn’t it?

agentcooperinthewhitelodge · 11/12/2023 18:56

Well yes, because many women take inspiration from celebrity looks/trends. I know plenty of women who went blonde because they liked how it looked on various blonde celebrities/models etc- so what? It's hardly a novel concept- being inspired by what you see in celeb culture/western media is it? That's why many women plucked their eyebrows in the 90s, had boob implants, fake tan and dyed their hair blonde because Pam Anderson was all over the media in the 90s/00s. Trends are literally started by celebrities and images in the media.

I mean... DUH. 😂

monsteraa · 11/12/2023 18:57

I'm so pale that anything darker than a mid-brown looks black on me (and awful!) but I think black can look great on people with darker skin.

Fair comment but also young people don't have grey hair.

They probably get that cut/ style because it suits them and they feel good with it. No hair colour can really make you look young once you are 50+.

Of course it is. You've basically insulted everyone with traditional Irish/Celtic colouring and said they look "disgusting", "rank" and now "gross".

Or would you prefer it if we called it by its other name of racism?

Gwenhwyfar · 11/12/2023 19:01

I used to watch all the Makeover Guy videos on YouTube and I'd say about 90% looked better when given a lighter hair colour. They were mainly white American women. There were a handful who had naturally dark-ish brown hair who looked better with black as it was a stronger colour.

That response wasn’t to anyone telling me I was ‘being offensive’ 🥴

Why start lying about a post that's right there for anyone to check?

because I am Asian! And have naturally raven hair. I am experimenting with dark brown now though as I get older. Black doesn't drain everyone though.

If you mean that shiny black hair which is so dark it’s almost blue, that is the absolute best hair colour ever!

What are you even talking about? I'm referring directly to your spiteful posts insulting anyone with a certain colouring and the plain lies you're telling about them. Are you now just trying plain obfuscation?

This is a good point. No-one younger than 30 has their hair styled like that, it's true. You don't see teens and women in their 20s with that hair. That's not to say it can't look lovely, but its certainly not indicative of "youth".

NonPlayerCharacter · 11/12/2023 19:06

I don't think that style is supposed to kid anyone into thinking the wearer is actually 16. It's just intended to give them some lift and bounce so they don't look older or "flatter" than they are.

Sure, but the point is- there is nothing special about that hairstyle/colour that projects "youth" more so than black simply because we all associate it with more mature women anyway.
