One year old poo..?! Had enough

Ds is nearly 14 months. He poos around 4 times a day on average. It’s usually loose and lots of it. Had lots of tests to check if something is wrong but all come back fine. I can’t understand how this is normal?! It’s my first and I can’t stand the nappies so maybe I’m just not up to speed on the realities but is this normal? I thought by now it would be once a day max and proper hard stools

My DD is 2 and potty trained but she still poops 1-2 times a day. I'm quite sure it normal. I always changed her nappy a lot and she never got nappy rash. But she did rarely poo out and about, often she only pooed at home or when visiting family.

@StopWithYourNonsense i was worried milk would make it worse so I’ve stuck to formula. Is that wrong?

My baby is happier not on formula. Maybe its the formula giving him a dicky tummy.
I do think 4 times a day sounds a lot!

4 times a day is quite a lot, I have a 15 month old and he is once a day or sometimes every other day but then he might go twice. Stools are formed but soft and don't cause him any distress. They smell like slurry sometimes though 🤢

He's been off formula since 12 months and doesn't even drink milk in a cup, he only wants water.

@Greebosmum I don’t think it’s fair to say count your blessings. Neither constipation or multiple loose stools are pleasant for toddlers. Also medics do not always get it right!! I’m a HCP and medics regularly refer to me and honestly often haven’t listened properly to parents (possibly due to the limited time they have rather than not wanting to help) which is evident by the incorrect information on referrals.

My 18 month old also has multiple loose stools and constantly has an awful nappy rash no matter what we do, says ‘sore’ and points to his bum and is distressed about nappy changes. He’s gassy and gets stomach cramps and I’ve often thought constipation would be better for him but know in reality it’d just be unpleasant for him in a different way.

OP trust your gut, we’re still awaiting tests but I suspect intolerance rather than allergies for my DC which won’t show on tests - it’s often just a case of eliminating certain things until you figure out what it is with intolerances. I’m pushing for more investigations because he’ll go to nursery next year and need to have something in writing to stop them sending him home after each loose stool! It’s a bit miserable to deal with when they’re constantly leaking through but I just go out prepared with plenty of supplies for changes and have some good stain remover. The frequency of my LO’s poos has also gone down from around 10 + to 4 ish a day over time and you wouldn’t believe how many Doctors have told me up to 10 poos a day is normal!

I think some babies have it on a runny side, mine did and it was normal.

RichTea63 · 09/12/2023 13:23

Doesn't sound normal to me....it might be an intolerance rather than an allergy? Maybe get some advice on trying an exclusion diet.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 09/12/2023 13:30

Ds2 had "toddler diarrhoea " until he was over 3. Children are all different, 4 runny poops a day isn't unusual.

@whatbowv - sorry this is nearly a year later but did this resolve for your little one? My 1 year old is going through the same thing currently

Makingchocolatecake · 24/11/2024 21:41

I would stop the formula and see if that helps, they don't need it after they turn 1
