One year old poo..?! Had enough

Ds is nearly 14 months. He poos around 4 times a day on average. It’s usually loose and lots of it. Had lots of tests to check if something is wrong but all come back fine. I can’t understand how this is normal?! It’s my first and I can’t stand the nappies so maybe I’m just not up to speed on the realities but is this normal? I thought by now it would be once a day max and proper hard stools

My guess would be toddler diarrhoea or secondary lactose intolerance (usually triggered by an infection).

DS always had very runny poos. Literally like someone had poured a pint of korma into his nappy. When he stopped drinking breast milk at 18 months (we didn’t give him cows milk and opted for oat milk, suspecting lactose intolerance or a mild form of CMPA), his poos became normal.

Safxxx · 09/12/2023 09:25

Try lactose free milk or plant based.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 09/12/2023 09:27

Stop the formula and make sure you've got plenty of fibre in his diet.

StopWithYourNonsense · 09/12/2023 09:28

Any reason why he's still on formula? I'd get him off that, give him water, ordinary cow's milk, and diluted cordial.

Candyflosscrochet · 09/12/2023 09:29

Go with your instinct op....you know him best.
My baby had this, constant, frequent runny poos and after months and months we figured it was definitely an allergy to something. Tried removing lactose, no real change. Whilst researching possible causes I realised I had a lot of the same symptoms (including regular loose movements) and so we were both tested for coeliacs. Although they came back negative, I decided to remove gluten from my diet and it was a game changer. So after my son was tested, I changed his diet and low an behold, the same change in him. We have now both been diagnosed with non-coeliac gluten intolerance and no more loose poop unless we have been glutened or are ill.
Worth considering maybe?
Good luck and as I said, go with your instinct. I don't think 4/5 runny nappies a day in a food eating child is right unless it is an allergen reaction.

Oceanrudeness · 09/12/2023 09:32

My son had this. Non-ige dairy allergy eventually diagnosed. Doesn't show up on blood test, skin prick etc. Could be that, especially as you mentioned it was a funny colour.

Any other allergy-like symptoms? Like constant sniffy nose or runny eyes?

@StopWithYourNonsense i was worried milk would make it worse so I’ve stuck to formula. Is that wrong?

Have you looked into things like FPIES? It’s not always vomiting.

SmokySilverShine · 09/12/2023 09:45

Happened with my baby, so many dirty nappies. Doctor suggested changing her formula milk to a cheaper more standard version. I think I used Aptamil, which at that time had fish oils in it. ( I though that would be beneficial ) he said try something like SMA or similar, I forgot them all now, but a more standard brand.
It did the trick.
Bit of an issue again as a toddler, but I found optibac probiotics worked very well, and resolved issues.

Ohnoooooooo · 09/12/2023 09:45

I would ask to try dairy free formula

Thegoodbadandugly · 09/12/2023 09:48

Perhaps try taking him off the formula, try avoid fresh orange.

HMW1906 · 09/12/2023 09:53

My oldest is just 3, still in nappies as resisting potty training 🙄. He goes at least twice a day, sometimes 3 times and he usually soft/sloppy, sometimes solid. It’s perfectly normal for toddlers to have soft/sloppy poop.

Formula is basically milk with added nutrients. You’re wasting money using it at this stage.

All babies aren’t the same

Greebosmum · 09/12/2023 09:58

I would say count your blessings. My poor little grandson (17 months) has terrible constipation and has even had to go to hospital with it. At one point he was having 8 (yes, that is correct) sachets of movicol a day. 4 poos a day would be a dream. If the medics are happy I would be happy.

Sleepsleepsleep123 · 09/12/2023 09:59

My 2.5 yo poos 2 or 3 times a day. Never occurred to me it wasn't normal.

romdowa · 09/12/2023 10:02

We had this with my son and it turned out to be high fructose fruits like pears and apples. Drs where useless and had no clue.

GreatGateauxsby · 09/12/2023 10:03

No sounds totally normal tbh....

If consistency is a worry aI'd be trying a probiotic, switching to FULL FAT milk and reducing fruit

Mine was doing 3-4 per day at that age at 18m it was more like 2-3.

She gets 1-2 portions of fruit per day. Bulk of her cals are fat and starchy carbs

JustLookingThanks · 09/12/2023 10:07

He could be lactose intolerant, it took me a long time to realise mine was. Try lactose free milk that may make a big difference. Ordinary yoghurt and hard cheese is fine as the bacteria eat the lactose. It certainly describes our experience with a lactose intolerant child.

TaaLaa · 09/12/2023 11:27

A friend had this with her daughter. She was eventually diagnosed late primary age with fructose allergy.

unexpectedalliances · 09/12/2023 11:32

The only 'real' allergy testing is an exclusion diet. Start a detailed food diary of times etc and all symptoms, behaviour. Exclude the likely culprits for a month and see what changes

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 09/12/2023 11:39

I’d start tweaking his diet to stiffen up his poos bananas and rice might help.

BettyBakesCakes · 09/12/2023 11:43

One of mine was like this op and we found too much dairy set it off. They were allergy tested and all was fine. They outgrew it eventually but the nappies were awful (and v smelly).

Moreveganice · 09/12/2023 11:52

My DS was like this and it turned out to be an intolerance to tomatoes. It got worse but was only identified when he also started getting a rash on his face. We had explored dairy/ lactose intolerance but didn’t know tomatoes could do this.

Until then I hadn’t realised what a large ( and consistent) part of his diet they were - raw cherry tomatoes at lunch. Ketchup. Spag Bol. Pizza. Casserole. It hadn’t been picked up a trigger as he was literally eating them everyday.

TheCosyRain · 09/12/2023 11:57

What formula is it? When we originally switched from breastfeeding to formula I went to aptimil. Baby wouldn’t poo for 3 days then had a blowout. Switched to a different formula and had nice normal daily poops since. She was young when this happened but I do think formula can have an impact. Id try switching over to whole milk now.

RedRobyn2021 · 09/12/2023 11:59

I'm sure my DD pooed around 3 times a day at this age and they were all loose, she was bf though I don't know if there is a difference with formula.
