... to be upset that my sister has totally cocked up her present for my DS's 1st birthday?

I know I am really because he doesn't know it's his birthday today. But I feel stupidly upset. She bought him some clothes at Boden ages ago and then yesterday when she was wrapping them up realised that she'd got him the wrong size. So she took them back today (but didn't buy him anything else) and decided she'd get him something at an old department store in Ealing (it's not where she lives, she's visiting someone). So she called me to see what I wanted for him and then realised it's now turned into a furniture shop.

I know it's ridiculous but we're really close and I just think it's a bit crap of her Her DS is now 8 and I always get him really nice and thoughtful presents.

How stupid to feel upset. IABU I know.

you are being utterly unreasonable. she didnt know the shop had changed.

beaniesteve · 14/03/2008 11:17

She probably feels a bit crap too.

I can see why it might make you feel emotional but you are close, it's just a slip-up.

YABU and you should not make her feel bad about it. your DS won;t know or care.....

she was not to know the shop had changed

why is it crap of her???

too much emphasis on the present here, rather than celebrating his 1 yr old birthday

GreatAuntieWurly · 14/03/2008 11:19

there will be plenty of other birthdays.......

wannaBe · 14/03/2008 11:21

yabu totally.

he won't know. or care.

2shoes · 14/03/2008 11:21

yabu
she has gone to a lot of trouble, it just went wrong.
your ds will not care.

PatsyCline · 14/03/2008 11:21

Could that be Daniel's department store, Spicemonster? I remember it well (dreams of previously sophisticated life in London).

Your sister has been a bit rubbish but not in a vindictive way. Let it go - your nephew would be upset if his aunty screwed up his present but your DS won't even register it, as you said.

Your sister has tried to put things right, but I'd tell her that you're more than happy to wait for the Boden clothes.

gingerninja · 14/03/2008 11:23

But she did try, it's not like she ignored him.

It is that very one PatsyCline. Of course I haven't told her I'm upset - like I said, I know I'm being unreasonable. And of course he won't know.

I'm not placing too much emphasis on the present I don't think lulumama - I wouldn't care what she'd got him tbh. It's just typical of her to cock up the ordering in the first place

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 14/03/2008 11:25

She hasn't cocked it up yet - there is still time for her to get him something wonderful, and if he gets it on a different day then that just spreads the presents around a bit.

She would feel awful if she realised she had upset you, or that you were posting ungrateful comments on here about her.

SoupDragon · 14/03/2008 11:26

How nice it must be to be perfect and never make a mistake.

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 14/03/2008 11:28

yabu - these things happen, and it wasn't as if she had left the present buying completely late. She thought she was organised well in advance.

Just enjoy the birthday - you won't ever get to celebrate the 1st one again!!

purpleflower · 14/03/2008 11:29

My brother completely forgot DS first birthday even though I reminded him a week before.

fryalot · 14/03/2008 11:29

To answer the actual question in the thread title: NO, YANBU to feel upset that his first birthday is not going the way you envisaged.

However, YABU to blame all this on your sister.

You can all make it up to him on his 6th birthday or his 15th or his 48th - any time he is likely to actually remember it.

But I completely understand you being upset that the day you had planned did not pan out in that way.

spicemonster · 14/03/2008 11:32

Thank you squonk. Like I said, I know it's silly and I'm totally overreacting.

I'm really tired and not being very rational.

OP posts:
fryalot · 14/03/2008 11:33

rational? what's that then?

spicemonster · 14/03/2008 11:50

I have no idea squonk.

Daniels..is just being rebuilt..its a building site at the mo! The little shop down the road is a temporary one just with some of the furniture in.....It used to have lovely baby stuff so had it still been open Im sure you would have got something nice! She couldn't have known.

YABU, but you know that

cece · 14/03/2008 13:09

I remember Daniels - it closed down ages ago though, about 2 years at least! Used to love that shop.

Your sister tried, that is what counts so I think yes YABU

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 14/03/2008 13:11

I think it is a bit OTT to be so bothered tbh.

cece · 14/03/2008 13:11

I seem to remember they had a branch in Windsor as well or has that gone too?
