Christmas dinner!

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 20:23

I've just had my head bitten off by dh because i dared to say I wasn't particularly happy about the fact that my mil is making pork for Xmas dinner!

I mean, what's the point of a traditional Christmas dinner if we aren't eating a 'traditional' turkey/ham?

I'm grateful she's hosting, but seriously? Might as well go to the local curry house!

Her argument was that the turkey was so expensive last year! Let me tell you, they are not short of a bob or two, and quite honestly I'm more than happy to contribute towards the cost if she had mentioned it!!

No turkey (I'm not even that keen on) but do like a traditional Xmas dinner, means no cranberry sauce either! And you can't ham the ham with bloody pork!! Ffs...

Dh told me if I have such a problem then I should go round and tell her!! Why can't he see where me and my grown adult kids are coming from and grow some and tell her it's not bloody on!!!

Why aren't you hosting then OP? Maybe offer to do it then you can have it your way.

jeaux90 · 07/12/2023 20:27

I mean I'm with you on the turkey thing though.

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/12/2023 20:27

I'm with your MIL, were having beef this year. I'm getting a chicken too.

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 20:28

@jeaux90
I would have and have offered! But their mansion is far more suitable for the 10 of us who'll be attending!

So you're not keen on turkey but you're kicking up a massive fuss that it's not there? Hmm Surely you understand how mental (and ungrateful) your post sounds?
Also, their finances are literally NONE of your business.

Remagirl · 07/12/2023 20:29

Have turkey at home on Boxing Day? It's just a day 😊

Ragwort · 07/12/2023 20:30

Why aren't you hosting? If you've got grown up adult DC of your own your MIL would probably be delighted if someone else hosts.

I admit I would much prefer a traditional Turkey lunch ... which is why I always host.

Sparklesocks · 07/12/2023 20:30

It’s not like she’s doing you a few rustlers in the microwave - pork will still be nice!

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 07/12/2023 20:30

If you’re that fussed about Turkey then can’t you make it and take it “as a gift/ contribution to the meal”?
Honestly though, I would happily miss Turkey- there’s a reason we only usually eat it once a year.

Potplant19 · 07/12/2023 20:31

My 3 year old had her first Christmas meltdown this evening as well. We told her to take some deep breaths and do something that made her feel calm and happy.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 07/12/2023 20:32

It wouldn’t be my choice for Christmas dinner but it’s each to their own and if you’re being made dinner you can either suck it up and be polite or you can stay at home. It’ll be up to DH and your adult DC whether they go or stay with you.

Bournetilly · 07/12/2023 20:32

You are being ridiculous, you’re not even keen on turkey. If you are that bothered cook one and take it round (inform her first) or make your own turkey dinner between Christmas and new year.

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 20:33

@IHateLegDay I'm not kicking up a 'massive fuss' I was simply saying to mu dh I was disappointed that tradition can't be adhered to for one bloody day!!

OP posts:
ChickpeaPie · 07/12/2023 20:35

Is this a joke?
I can’t imagine being so rude when someone else is cooking.

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 20:35

To me, it's like when it's your birthday and someone says 'oh, I'll give you your card next week when I might see you' erm, it's my bday that day and you had a whole 364 days to send it or manage to drop it round. What's the point of traditional food if you can't be bothered to go along with it.

Christmas dinner is one day a year, not Boxing Day, not the week before! It's one day!!

OP posts:
NChance · 07/12/2023 20:36

Why so fussed about turkey? I mean I always say if it was that great we would eat it all year round
And we do go to the local Indian for Christmas Day and it's still Christmas

IsItOverYetAndCanIComeOutNow · 07/12/2023 20:37

You’d lose your shit round mine - lobster and chips on the menu here.

It’s one bloody meal - catch yourself on!

Tintackedsea · 07/12/2023 20:38

I'm making pork too.

Stuffing ✔️
Crackling ✔️
Apple sauce ✔️

Cranberry sauce is nice with pork too.

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 20:38

@IsItOverYetAndCanIComeOutNow
EXACTLY! One day, why can't we just be normal and traditional for one. Flipping. Day!

OP posts:
Chipsandbeansandcheese · 07/12/2023 20:39

Take cranberry sauce anyway. Who cares what you eat it with.

SecondUsername4me · 07/12/2023 20:41

So bring a turkey.

My MIL doesn't cook turkey. If we went there for Christmas day I'd bring one.

Ragwort · 07/12/2023 20:41

Why can't you cook a turkey meal the weekend before? You sound like a petulant teenager.

Or stay at home with a Turkey and let your DH & DC enjoy the day with their DGM.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/12/2023 20:42

YABU - it’s up to her if she’s hosting. I mean if she was just making sandwiches I’d understand but pork (as long as you all eat pork) as a roast is perfectly fine.

You can have apple sauce which is lovely!

I’m pescatarian now but I do miss the different roasts with their accompanying sauces 😂

Grumpystripes · 07/12/2023 20:43

Is turkey really traditional? I thought pre 20th century it was goose or beef for Christmas dinner. We usually have goose which is at least 100% better than turkey which is horrible.
