Christmas dinner!

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 20:23

I've just had my head bitten off by dh because i dared to say I wasn't particularly happy about the fact that my mil is making pork for Xmas dinner!

I mean, what's the point of a traditional Christmas dinner if we aren't eating a 'traditional' turkey/ham?

I'm grateful she's hosting, but seriously? Might as well go to the local curry house!

Her argument was that the turkey was so expensive last year! Let me tell you, they are not short of a bob or two, and quite honestly I'm more than happy to contribute towards the cost if she had mentioned it!!

No turkey (I'm not even that keen on) but do like a traditional Xmas dinner, means no cranberry sauce either! And you can't ham the ham with bloody pork!! Ffs...

Dh told me if I have such a problem then I should go round and tell her!! Why can't he see where me and my grown adult kids are coming from and grow some and tell her it's not bloody on!!!

I’m having beef. If I were offered turkey I’d go vegetarian for a day.

@ChocolateCinderToffee i am vegetarian! More of the good stuff if you don't have turkey!!

Pinkyyogapanties · 07/12/2023 21:55

‘Dh told me if I have such a problem then I should go round and tell her!! ‘

Hilarious!!!!

stepintochristmas1 · 07/12/2023 21:55

To be honest I would just be grateful someone else is cooking . If you are not staying with them you could do a turkey next day .

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 21:56

@Behindyouiam

Always one isn't there! Got to love the mumsnet spelling police!

Her DH is snapping because she's being ridiculous.

Very true

Turkey is so hugely overrated, it's dry and tasteless. Bernard Matthews definitely had the last laugh.

Only if you don’t know how to cook it.

WaltzingWaters · 07/12/2023 21:58

Well I’m with you on this one. (But then I don’t particularly like pork). Gotta be turkey for Christmas!

Behindyouiam · 07/12/2023 21:58

@Behindyouiam

Always one isn't there! Got to love the mumsnet spelling police!

Almost as bad as the Turkey police!

10HailMarys · 07/12/2023 22:01

just wanted some words of support that I'm not being unreasonable

You are being unreasonable, though

BrimfulOfMash · 07/12/2023 22:03

I think cranberry sauce will go well with pork.

And many other trad sides, too. Red cabbage, chipolatas, bacon rolls, stuffing, roast potatoes. Pork meat will even look a bit like turkey.

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/12/2023 22:04

I don't like turkey, neither does DD, so we have either roast chicken or beef.

I'd rather have pork than turkey, it isn't a law that you have to eat turkey, so I think people can just eat whatever they want, be it beans on toast or a full roast!

Sholkedabemus · 07/12/2023 22:05

I’m doing chicken and a side of salmon. You’re being ridiculous @vixsta2001 .

BebbanburgIsMine · 07/12/2023 22:07

Oh and we never ate turkey while I was growing up either, not once.

It was always chicken or beef.

SgtJuneAckland · 07/12/2023 22:08

I thought you were being a bit unreasonable until you said there will be no pigs in blankets, sacrilege!!

Finestreason · 07/12/2023 22:08

Grumpystripes · 07/12/2023 20:43

Is turkey really traditional? I thought pre 20th century it was goose or beef for Christmas dinner. We usually have goose which is at least 100% better than turkey which is horrible.

Hurrah! Goose all the way.

Except at a restaurant please rather than cooked by me.

If I were going to someone’s home I wouldn’t expect them to cook what I wanted even if it was a “traditional” holiday.

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 22:10

@SgtJuneAckland absolutely!!

We don't like turkey, and yes I can cook it properly. We're having Mexican this year with bavvete steak fajitas, and a big bowl of roast potatoes and gravy.

If you want turkey get a butterflied breast for Boxing Day.

vixsta2001 · 07/12/2023 22:12

Ok so maybe IABU then. The thing is, and I think it's the thing that's annoyed me a little is that when my son popped in to see them last week to discover this atrocity of a plan for pork, she said she had passed it by my SIL who said that's fine and went on to comment and say well I know your mum won't be happy, but oh well!

Perhaps she is trying to tell me something 🫣

Only if you don’t know how to cook it.

Smothered in butter and bacon fat rather defeats the purpose

OldTinHat · 07/12/2023 22:14

Will there be crackling? If yes, then shove over, I'll have yours!

sprigatito · 07/12/2023 22:18

If it's really going to be overcooked pork, potatoes and 1 veg, then YANBU to be crestfallen. That's not a Christmas dinner. If it's roast pork instead of turkey but everything else is right, pigs/stuffing/cranberry/the traditional veg and good gravy, that's different.

Christmas dinner is sacred in this house!

everyscarwillbuildmythrone · 07/12/2023 22:18

I would suck up eating pork rather than turkey, but definitely take sides you want, don't ask, just turn up with them "as you wanted to contribute". Cranberry sauce is nice with pork, and I'd definitely have pigs in blankets too.

youngestisapsycho · 07/12/2023 22:18

We have roast pork and crackling every xmas… Noone likes Turkey in my family. I cook a chicken too.

mrsbyers · 07/12/2023 22:21

We had pork last year and it was lovely but I do prefer turkey just would have got wasted as we went away between Christmas and New Year. We tend to pick up a few reduced crowns in the sales so have plenty of turkey in Jan , Feb , Mar , April

TheCatterall · 07/12/2023 22:37

@vixsta2001 ok this is where I draw the line. I’ll forgo turkey happily for pork and crackling.

but pigs in blankets is a god given right and no one should contemplate Christmas dinner without them. Christ - they’ll be suggesting no Brussels sprouts next….
